Abstract

The decision of how firms finance their investments is among the prominent researchers in the area of corporate finance. The capital structure of banks, however, still relatively under-explored. Banking is one type of industry that employs a high level of leverage in creating companies’ value since its operating profits come from lending and borrowing activities.  This research aims to analyse the effect of the mix of capital structure on financial performance of commercial banks in Indonesia. We use annual data for the period 2009 – 2017 that are extracted from the audited financial statement. The data is then analysed to find relationship on the use of leverage to the firms’ performance. Our study finds strong evidence that short term loan significantly has positive influence on profitability of banks through Return on Equity (ROE), which indicates that deposit is considered as the cheapest source of funding. However, banks should carefully maintain their liquidity risk to ensure the availability of funds to pay for withdrawals obligation. We also found that the use of long-term debt and the use of equity, in general, do not have a significant effect on firm value, which indicates that, in terms of long-term financing, profitability and firm value are insensitive to capital structure.

Abstract

This research is intended to empirically examine the efficiency and productivity change of 26 regional development banks (BPDs) in Indonesia in 2011-2016 using a non-parametric approach of data envelopment analysis (DEA). This research was started by determining input and output variables based on three approaches, i.e., intermediation, operation, and the asset approach. The Multi-stage DEA was adopted to generate the efficiency score, and the input-orientated variable return to scale (VRS) assumption is specified in data analysis. The Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) was used to measure the total factor productivity change indicating the improvement or deterioration of performance of BPDs over time. The multi-stage DEA result shows a significant difference in the number of efficient BPDs using the three approaches. MPI shows that the highest productivity increase was in the asset approach of 84.0%, supported by the increase in efficiency change and technological change. While in intermediation and operation approach, the increase was only 44.0% and 36.0%, depending on the increase in efficiency change and scale efficiency change. This research suggests that BPDs need to invest more in technology to increase firm efficiency.

Abstract

The development of technology for entering the revolution industries 4.0 era nowadays becomes a hot issue in all industries. This condition is more interesting to discover in reducing budget expenditure, especially in the production process and obtaining raw materials. One of the tools that can be used is through technology foresight in patent management to see more information and predict the advanced technology which brings a competitive advantage in the digital era. Big data in fields of the repository is an urgent requirement, especially in collecting data from R D results. So, it will facilitate data retrieval within a specific time. This paper discusses how a user knows the development and predicts technology for market segmentation through a patent portfolio, licensing, status, competitor, innovation, and monitoring emerging market with a patent database registered on WIPO. The methodology used software Innography (Licensed). This paper aims to analyze patent database of big data for repository, related to the development of technology foresight products that have been produced, as well as to study the competitors’ movement. The result shows that there are 1262 registered patents with seventeen patents and six organizations acting as assignees from 2004 until 2018. This paper is beneficial to the industry and stakeholders needing the impact of the implementation of the latest technology and the appropriate level of competition in the commercialization of big data for the repository as a digital system for information technology.

Abstract

High job demand can be a factor that increases work stress and decreases job satisfaction, that it is expected to increases employee turnover intention. This research conducted on 50 employees from a department store. The purpose of this study is to examine mediation of work stress and job satisfaction on the influence of job demand toward the employee’s turnover intention. The result of this study cannot prove significantly the influence job demand toward turnover intention through the mediation effect of work stress. Job satisfaction can mediate the influence of job demand towards turnover intention. Other results found in this study show that there is an influence of job demand on turnover intention through the mediation of work stress and job satisfaction.

Abstract

This aims to examine the effect of business education on entrepreneurial intention with feasibility and entrepreneurial self-efficacy as the intervening variables. This study was conducted on students of Business study programs, Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya (FIA UB). The number of samples used in this study was 321 students using proportionate stratified random sampling. The questionnaire was used to collect data, and Partial Least Square (PLS) was used for the analysis. We found that; business education has a positive effect on feasibility; business education has a positive effect on entrepreneurial self-efficacy; feasibility has a positive influence on entrepreneurial intention; entrepreneurial self-efficacy has a positive influence on entrepreneurial intention; entrepreneurial self -efficacy has a positive influence on feasibility; and business education has a positive influence on entrepreneurial intention, both directly and indirectly through feasibility and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. The results of this study are expected to provide insight into the feasibility and entrepreneurial self-efficacy so that students can improve these aspects to start a business.
