Abstract

Background: Basketball involves complex and intense movements such as jumping, pivoting, and cutting. These activities impose significant mechanical loads on the knee joint, increasing the risk of meniscus tears. Meniscus repair is highly recommended to prevent early osteoarthritis, but the postoperative period often leads to clinical impairments that require structured physiotherapy. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of comprehensive physiotherapy management in a basketball player after right meniscus repair surgery on knee function recovery. Method: This study utilized a descriptive qualitative method with a case report design and a single-subject pre-test and post-test approach. The subject was a 14-year-old male basketball player diagnosed with sub-acute postoperative right meniscus repair (9th week). The 4-week intervention program included Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), strengthening exercises, balance training, and core stability exercises. Clinical parameters were measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), goniometer, Manual Muscle Testing (MMT), anthropometry (midline), and the Barthel Index. Results: After 4 weeks of therapy, the results showed a reduction in motion pain intensity (from score 3 to 2) and tenderness (from score 4 to 2), an increase in the right knee flexion range of motion (ROM) from 110° to 120°, and a decrease in thigh (quadriceps) muscle atrophy. Muscle strength remained stable at an MMT score of 4, and the patient's daily functional activity level remained optimally independent (Barthel Index score of 100). Conclusion: A structured exercise-based rehabilitation program combined with NMES is effective in reducing pain, increasing ROM, improving muscle atrophy, and maintaining the patient's initial functional ability toward a safe return to sport.

Abstract

Dental and oral hygiene in hearing-impaired children requires special attention because limitations in communication and independence may hinder optimal oral hygiene practices. Parents’ attitudes are one factor that may support children’s dental and oral hygiene. This study aimed to determine the relationship between parents’ attitudes in maintaining dental and oral hygiene and the debris index of hearing-impaired children at SDLB-B Karya Mulia Surabaya. This observational analytical study used a cross-sectional approach. The population and sample comprised 33 parents of hearing-impaired students selected using total sampling. Parents’ attitudes were assessed using a Likert-scale questionnaire, while the debris index was assessed through direct oral examination. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 0.05. Most parents had a moderate attitude, while most children had a moderate debris index. The Chi-Square analysis showed a significant relationship between parents’ attitudes and the debris index of hearing-impaired children (p=0.002). In conclusion, parents’ attitudes in maintaining children’s dental and oral hygiene are related to the oral cleanliness condition of hearing-impaired children. Strengthening parental education and assistance in daily toothbrushing is neededKeywords: parental attitudes; dental and oral hygiene; debris index; hearing-impaired children

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of disability associated with joint degeneration and altered gait biomechanics, particularly increased medial knee loading and gait deviation. Knee braces are commonly used as a conservative intervention, although their effectiveness in modifying gait remains uncertain. This literature review analyzed studies from PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO published within the last 10 years. Of 212 identified records, three studies met the inclusion criteria. Outcomes included pain (VAS), functional status (WOMAC), and biomechanical parameters such as external knee adduction moment (EKAM). The findings indicate that knee braces provide consistent symptomatic benefits, including pain reduction, improved stability, and enhanced functional performance, which may indirectly improve gait. Valgus knee braces demonstrated modest but significant reductions in medial knee loading, as reflected by decreased EKAM. However, their biomechanical effectiveness was inferior to laterally wedged insoles in one study, and not all studies directly assessed objective gait parameters. Additionally, outcomes varied depending on brace type, duration of use, and patient-specific factors. Evidence remains largely limited to short-term effects, with insufficient data on long-term biomechanical outcomes. Overall, knee braces offer clinically meaningful but variable benefits in knee OA, with limited evidence supporting their direct impact on gait deviation. Their use should be considered adjunctive, and further high-quality studies are needed to clarify long-term effectiveness. Keywords: Knee Brace, Knee Osteoarthritis, Gait deviation.
