Abstract

Biologically active substances (BAS) extracted from marine hydrobionts are characterized by high diversity and efficiency. They are represented by carotenoids, phospholipids, saponins and other compounds possessing high antioxidant (AOA), antitumor, immunomodulatory, radioprotective, and hypolipidemic activities. Because of extremely high marine BAS activity, the BAS dose necessary for treatment and prevention of many diseases is very small.  The aim of present work was to assess biological properties of BAS complexes extracted from Black Sea marine inverterbrates for their following using in pharmacological preparations including liposomal drug delivery. BAS complexes were extracted from marine invertebrate tissues by two-phase extraction in combination with ultrasonication. Antioxidant activity of BAS extracts was determined with potassium permanganate discoloration method in an aqueous sulfuric acid medium. Antimicrobial activity was investigated by germination of BAS extracts.  BAS influence on lymphocyte proliferative activity was studied with help of cytogenetic analysis. In this paper, the assessment of antioxidant, antimicrobial and mitogenic activities of biologically active complexes extracted from marine invertebrate tissues is presented. BAS properties in the oil  and alcohol-water phases are compared. For the first time BAS complexes from Black Sea invertebrates are extracted by the resource-light method of two-phase extraction in combination with ultrasonication. Conditions for obtaining BAS extracts with optimal characteristics are proposed.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and compare the key social, economic and environmental sustainability practices in the leather industry. Content analysis was used to analyse extracted sustainability information from either the website, annual report, sustainability report or corporate social responsibility report of six leather-related companies. Review of existing literature assisted in categorising different practices under social, economic and environmental sustainability, while an identification of patterns among practices followed. Findings reveal that companies are observing a good practice of either dedicating a section of their website to revealing their sustainability activities or utilising their sustainability reports or annual reports. Energy efficiency, waste management and reduction of greenhouse gases emission were the most occurring environmental sustainability practices. Health and safety occurred as the dominant social sustainability practice, while economic sustainability practices have not been well defined, providing an opportunity for future research. The study provides a useful resource for managers and companies in the leather supply chain to learn from brands that have been embarking on sustainability efforts and assist them to a better understanding of the concept, in readiness for strategy formulation, implementation and reporting.

Abstract

The topic of transition curves is well known in track and road engineering. Over the years the need for easement between straight and curved sections in railway and road design has grown, with an important reason being increase in vehicle speed. Testing of transitions is often done with graph analysis where the property of lateral change of acceleration is compared between varieties of curves. However, graph analysis does not give a clear understanding of the behaviour of a vehicle in a transition phase the way, for instance, field or laboratory experiments might do. In this paper we present an initial study on the behaviour of a down-scaled vehicle model driving through three distinct transitions from straight to curved sections. In addition we show a comparison of the physical model against a virtual model.

Abstract

Steady host–guest inclusion complexes have been produced with medicinally important guest molecule theophylline within aqueous α-Cyclodextrin and HP-β-Cyclodextrin. α-and HP-β-Cyclodextrins have been established with favorable structural features for inclusion with Theophylline which include diversified applications in modern science such as controlled delivery in the field of pharmaceuticals, food processing, pesticides, foodstuffs etc. Theophylline is one of the most widely accepted drugs for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) worldwide, even if it has been used clinically for many years. With both α and HP-β-Cyclodextrins it is found that 1:1 hosts-guest inclusion complexes are formed with the guest molecule theophylline. The construction and quality of the inclusion complexes have been characterized by using conductivity measurement, surface tension study, and Job’s method. The inclusion phenomenon has been confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, proton NMR study. Association constants and thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated for the created inclusion complexes by ultraviolet spectroscopy.

Abstract

Photocatalytic materials development is very important from an environmental perspective. They can be employed in clean energy production by hydrogen generation as well as in wastewater treatment by photocatalysis. One of the key subjects in this area is the advancement of materials with a low band gap, thus the catalyst can use the sunlight more efficiently. Based on this issue, this research aims to develop photocatalysts based on bismuth, niobium, and iron (Bi2FexNbO7), analyze the influence of iron concentration (x = 0, 0.8, 1, and 1.2) and characterize them through optical and structural analysis. The powder samples were synthetized by the sol-gel method. Band gap estimation was performed using UV-Vis analysis and the Kubelka-Munk method. The XRD technique was employed for phase determination and structural characterization. The catalyst with no iron (Bi2NbO7) presented a mix of three phases of reagents and a band gap of 3.14 eV. The iron addition promotes crystalline photocatalysts with high visible light absorption ability and a lower band gap, 2.09 eV. Further analysis must be performed. However, based on structural and optical proprieties, these materials can efficiently be employed both in wastewater treatment and hydrogen production.

Abstract

In recent years, secondary batteries received considerable attention as promising technology for energy storage in combination with renewable energy sources. The oxidation of carbon in conventional air electrodes reduces the life of secondary batteries. One possible solution for overcoming this problem is the replacement of carbon material with zeolite.Zeolite is a natural or synthetic porous material with crystalline structure which provides the necessary gas permeability. The required hydrophobicity of the electrode is ensured by mixing zeolite with an appropriate amount of polytetrafluoroethylene following a specially developed procedure. The main purpose of the present research is to discover the optimum level of hydrophobicity (impregnation) of zeolite. Moreover, appropriate amount of PTFE will ensure better mechanical stability and long charge/discharge cycle life.The results from this study show that the replacement of carbon with zeolite in the gas diffusion layer is a promising direction for optimization of the bi-functional air electrode. The relationship between the particle size and the hydrophobicity of the electrode was found. It was found that the mechanical stability and hydrophobicity of the electrode improved with the replacement of the emulsion powder. The gas permeability is maintained in the norms, which guarantees the good performance of the electrode. More than 200 charge/discharge cycles were reached.

Abstract

The female object, as a symbolic image created by male authors to reduce the threat brought by females towards patriarchy, has become a method to express male sexual and domestic fantasies. However, in the fairy tale adaptation by two mid-twentieth century female authors-Angela Carter and Anne Sexton, the female object is used to evoke feminist consciousness. Although former studies have covered some feminism issues, for instance, the feminist awareness through the mirror image in Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber, and the direct metaphors such as “doll” and “soap pop” which lead to female objectification in Anne Sexton’s Transformations, little research has compared the distinctive psychological impacts that the narrative forms between the two mentioned texts have on readers. In the first section of this paper, how both authors deconstruct the female stereotypes and how they reinterpret modes of female agency in the original Grimm’s fairy tales have been examined. Based on the writers’ perspective, the first section would also explore the expression of female objects in their works. As for the second section, I would mainly focus on the psychoanalysis of Lacan’s mirror stages, and yet cover the awakening processes presented in the mirror images and symbols composed in the two adaptations. In the third section, the different narrative strategies utilized by Carter and Sexton in order to stimulate readers’ responses towards feminist consciousness would be illustrated.
