Abstract

This study aims to investigate the determinants of corporate donations during the initial phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on the Portuguese context. It explores the interplay between pandemic-related factors, corporate structures, recipient profiles, and media coverage on the levels of corporate donations. In the absence of publicly available data, a comprehensive database of corporate donations was constructed by analyzing over six thousand news pieces from various media sources between March and May 2020. The database comprises 1171 donations from 709 different institutions. The relationship between corporate donations and multiple variables was examined, including the epidemiological progression of the pandemic, corporate ownership structures, recipient characteristics, and media coverage. Our analysis reveals that during the initial wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Portugal, corporate donations were predominantly made by large companies, primarily directed toward their local regions. Notably, nearly 93% of all donations were allocated to the National Health System. PPEs and hospital equipment were the preferred donation items among the contributing companies. These findings shed light on the factors influencing corporate donation behavior during emergency situations and provide valuable insights into trust levels within the healthcare system. This study contributes to the existing literature by offering a unique exploration of corporate donation behavior during the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically in Portugal. The comprehensive dataset and findings provide novel insights into the factors shaping corporate donation decisions during crises. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-010 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

The rapid growth of the retail market, coupled with increased consumer income, has led to a surge in impulsive and unplanned shopping. This study aims to examine the relationships between multi-sensory marketing, customers' moods, impulsive buying traits, and impulsive buying behavior, using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model. Customers' mood acts as a mediator and impulsive buying traits as a moderator. The researchers surveyed 450 consumers in Vietnam using the method of non-probability sampling and analyzed the data using SPSS and Smart PLS 4.0. The results show that customers' moods and impulsive buying traits positively influence impulsive buying behavior, with impulsive buying traits also significantly moderating the relationship between mood and impulsive buying. Additionally, customers' moods mediate the relationship between multi-sensory marketing and impulsive buying behavior. This research fills gaps in previous research by incorporating multi-sensory marketing and impulsive buying traits as variables and provides managerial implications for businesses and retailers to develop effective marketing strategies to encourage impulsive purchases and increase sales. Academically, the research reaffirms the relevance of the S-O-R model in the retail context and paves the way for future investigations into consumers' impulsive buying behavior. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-05 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on an independent restaurant chain in Puebla, Mexico, through longitudinal censuses with employees who had direct contact with diner guests (frontline employees) in 2019 and 2023. The survey data was analyzed through the algorithm Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) to balance sample sizes and Information Gain to determine the dependence between the study variables. The results revealed the health crisis has led to changes in pivotal factors that drove better performance from frontline employees and managers in restaurants in Mexico. After the pandemic, frontline employees began to favor standard compliance due to the reinforcement of hygiene protocols. However, there are implications for the structure of teams and work styles on account of the decline in the number of frontline employees and the creation of multifunctional positions. Regarding the manager's factors, Linear Communication, which consists of providing clear and timely information, has become more relevant. While, there has been a decrease in Dynamic Communication oriented towards dialogue and Productive Communication focused on participation and the achievement of objectives. COVID-19 has accentuated the vulnerability of female frontline employees, who, since the pandemic, occupy multifunctional positions; the number of employees has decreased in greater proportion than the number of restaurants that have closed, impacting team dynamics; the most affected restaurants are located in automotive industrial parks, while restaurants in tourist or commercial areas have managed to maintain their workforce. The selected independent restaurant chain has focused on the functional aspects of the restaurant, as denoted by their current transactional leadership style and hierarchical organizational culture. However, there is an important theoretical implication related to the post-pandemic context, characterized by the presence of multifunctional roles and the pressure to meet customer service standards. Frontline employees have adopted individualistic behaviors, negatively impacting collaborative teamwork. These finding challenges existing literature that often emphasizes the positive aspects of employee empowerment and multifunctionality; it suggests that, under certain conditions, these factors may inadvertently hinder team cohesion and collaborative efforts. This study highlights the need to capitalize on Mexican restaurants by not only valuing the strategies from senior management but also by incorporating interpersonal perspectives from frontline employees to improve the organization in procedural and relational terms to adapt to future crises. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-021 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

Legal issues of gender equality and the principle of inadmissibility of discrimination against women in all spheres of life are becoming relevant worldwide, including in the Republic of Kazakhstan. This study aims to show ways to enhance the role of women in the higher education system, which is necessary to implement the principle of real equality in relationships with men, the principle of fair distribution of managerial positions without gender discrimination, and the implementation of leadership activities by women due to their managerial potential. To achieve this goal, the authors have researched this topic in a comparative legal format, comparing the practice and legal peculiarities of Kazakhstan and some developed countries. We used logical analysis, comparative legislative analysis, legal analysis, and legal forecasting. Kazakh legislative acts that promote the expansion of women’s rights while enhancing the role of women in higher education were analyzed. The practical results of the study consist in the formulation and justification of organizational and legal ways to increase the leadership role of women in higher education in the Republic. The scientific novelty lies in the previously unexplored topic of gender equality in the higher education system of Kazakhstan from a legal viewpoint. The conclusion about gender asymmetry should encourage other researchers to study this problem on a larger scale and deepen the understanding that only clearly, competently, and equally selected leaders of both sexes can positively influence the accelerated development of the higher education system and ensure the actual competitiveness of Kazakhstani universities and their graduates. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-016 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

The pressure of competitive higher education has affected most universities, and whether the utilization of human capital as a resource to foster creativity, increase motivation, and boost innovation is an important topic to investigate. This study aims to explore the relationship between the elements of transformational leadership, affective trust, and intrinsic motivation and their impact on creativity to increase the performance of lecturers at Vietnamese universities, where most of them are also creators. Quantitative research is applied with data collected from full-time lecturers at Vietnamese universities from December 2023 to January 2024. The hypothesized correlations were investigated using structural equation modeling on a sample of 311 participants in Vietnam. The findings reveal substantial causal correlations between transformational leadership, affective trust, intrinsic motivation's determinants, and the creativity to improve performance and positive behavior from the lecturers' perspective. These results imply that leaders should focus on the prefix role of transformational leadership, which is the origin of affective trust, intrinsic motivation, and creativity, to raise the standard of higher education. In particular, affective trust needs more attention because it has the most vital mediating role in enhancing the impact of transformational leadership on lecturers' creativity. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-011 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

This study investigated land use and land cover (LULC) patterns and changes in the Bandon Bay area of Thailand from 1991 to 2021 using satellite imagery, the first comprehensive effort to assess historical LULC trends over the past 30 years and forecast future LULC scenarios using the CA-Markov model for 2031, 2041, and 2051. Results showed the predominant LULC during 1991-2001 was the abandoned paddy fields, and during 2006-2021 was the oil palm plantations. During 1991-2001, the abandoned paddy fields changed significantly, with a net gain of 59.28 km2. From 2001-2011 and 2011-2021, the oil palm plantations experienced the most crucial change, with a net gain of 292.94 km2 and 70.06 km2. In 2031, 2041, and 2051, the LULC was predicted to be oil palms, shrimp farms, mangroves, and urban and built-up lands. The LULC changes were consistent with the government policies implemented and indicated government policy as a driving force in LULC dynamics on Bandon Bay area forestry, aquaculture, and agriculture, particularly on oil palm cultivation. Government management and regulation on land use is crucial for reducing the expansion of agricultural areas, especially oil palm plantations and aquaculture areas, to mitigate negative impacts on the Bandon Bay ecosystem. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-06 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

This study investigates the concept of techno-economic institutions within institutional economics, focusing on the integration of technologies into economic frameworks to foster development. The primary objective is to introduce and advocate for the novel concept of “techno-economic institutions,” which is essential for embedding technologies into the socio-economic environment. This research employs a comprehensive methodological approach, including theoretical analysis, literature review, comparative studies, and case studies, to develop a new analytical model and provide fresh insights. The key findings include a comparative analysis of the interplay between institutions and technologies, a variational model detailing the life cycles of General-Purpose Technologies (GPTs), and an in-depth examination of institutional roles. The econometric models developed in this study demonstrate the significant impact of ICT patents and SCM systems on government efficiency, empirically validating the proposed theoretical framework. This paper contributes to the academic discourse by offering a methodologically robust and empirically substantiated examination of technological advancements in institutional frameworks, highlighting the importance of flexible institutional structures capable of adapting to technological change. These insights provide actionable recommendations for policymakers and suggest strategic investments in technological infrastructure to enhance government performance. Future research should explore the generalizability of these findings in different institutional contexts and examine variability in technology-institution interactions across diverse geopolitical landscapes. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-022 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

The current research aims to present the structural characterization of Gd-doped ceria powders and ceramics, investigating the structural evolution resulting from cerium substitution with Gd across the entire composition range from 0 to 100 mol.% Gd2O3. Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2 powders with varying Gd contents (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) were synthesized using the ionic gelation method followed by thermal annealing. The resulting powders were subjected to high-temperature treatment to obtain ceramics. Characterization methods included X-ray diffraction (XRD) to identify phase composition and confirm the formation of Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2 solid solutions, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for structural and morphological studies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to evaluate the electronic structure. Comparative analysis of Gd-doped calcined powders and sintered pellets revealed the impact of thermal treatment on the structural features of the resulting solid solutions, elucidating the influence of gadolinium substitution. The novelty of this research lies in demonstrating the successful preparation of Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2solid solutions via an alginate-mediated ion-exchange process and providing a detailed structural investigation over the entire range of dopant concentrations. This assessment highlights the feasibility for further research of these materials as suitable candidates for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) or catalyst applications. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-01 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

This study aims to validate the model on the effects of social media marketing activities on the perceived values of social media marketing activities and the effects of these perceived values on online brand engagement and, consequently, on brand loyalty. The data used in this study were collected through an online self-administered survey of 501 young social media users in Vietnam. Partial Least Squares Algorithm, Bootstrapping, PLSpredict/CVPAT, and Multi-Group Analysis methods embedded in Smart-PLS software were used to validate the measurement model and test the research hypotheses. The findings confirm that the positive effects of social media marketing activities on brand loyalty are transmitted through the perceived values of these activities and online brand engagement. These effects are more substantial for luxury brands compared to non-luxury brands. Importantly, our study offers a new approach to explaining the impact of social media marketing activities on brand loyalty by focusing on the perceived values of these activities and their effects on online brand engagement. To enhance brand loyalty, businesses should prioritize creating hedonic and utilitarian values through their social media marketing activities and use these values and online brand engagement as key performance indicators for planning and controlling their strategies. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-017 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

Hydrometeorological disasters due to extreme weather events represent a significant threat to the security of life in Jambi Province. In order to develop effective strategies for mitigating this threat, it is essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of the underlying dynamics that give rise to such disasters. Despite the high frequency of these events, more research is needed on the complex relationship between trends in extreme indices and the frequency of hydrometeorological disasters in this region. This study addresses this gap by utilizing rainfall data from 2008 to 2020 from the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and hydrometeorological disaster data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). A range of extreme rainfall indices, including PRCPTOT, R85P, R95P, R99P, CWD, CDD, R1mm, R10mm, R20mm, R50mm, RX1Day, RX5Day, and SDII, were subjected to careful analysis concerning hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, landslides, tornadoes, droughts, and forest fires. Notable results indicate a significant increasing trend (p < 0.05) for the CWD index, while decreasing trends are observed for R85P, R95P, R99P, R50mm, RX1Day, RX5Day, and SDII. PRCPTOT and R20mm show decreasing trends, and CDD shows an increasing trend, although it is not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Subsequently, there was a significant increase in landslides and tornadoes, while forest fires and floods showed an insignificant increase (p > 0.05). Drought exhibited a significant decreasing trend in Jambi. Correlation analysis revealed the complex relationship between extreme weather indices and hydrometeorological disasters. The positive correlations observed between most extreme rainfall indices and floods and landslides, except for CDD, indicate that extreme rainfall is the primary cause of these disasters in Jambi. The correlation is particularly pronounced in areas with mountainous topography, where landslides are more prevalent. The positive correlations observed between CDD and droughts and forest fires suggest that periods of reduced rainfall and increased drought contribute to these disasters. This correlation is more robust in districts with extensive peatlands. The results provide valuable insights into the vulnerability of Jambi Province to hydrometeorological disasters and highlight the importance of understanding regional variations in extreme weather events. These findings improve our understanding of the interactions between climate indices and disasters and provide the basis for informed risk reduction and adaptation strategies in changing climatic conditions. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-012 Full Text: PDF
