Abstract

EFFECT OF THE VITAMIN C SUPLEMENTATION TOWARD MULTI VITAMIN-MINERAL ON THE STATUS OF NUTRITIONAL ANTIOXIDANT IN WOMAN WORKERSMicronutrients, both vitamins and minerals are needed by the body in limited quantities, but their roleis essential to the body. To fulfill vitamin and mineral requirements, consumption of variant andbalanced diet is needed because most vitamins and minerals are not produced by our body. Foodsupplements can be a good alternative in providing sufficient amount of micronutrient if intake fromdietary sources are not enough. This research was intended to analyse the effect of multi vitaminmineral (MVM) supplementationcompared to a single nutrient supplementation (Vit C 1000 mg) ondietary antioxidant status. It was conducted on Februari 2008and thedesign of this research was adouble blind randomized controlled trial. There were 92 samples aged 20-45 years old, healthy(physically and clinically), did not consume alcohol, did not smoke and were willing to partipate in theresearch. Multi vitamin-mineral supplementation increased serum concentration of vitamin E andsuperoxide dismutase (SOD) significantly(p0.05), while single supplementation of vitamin C 1000 mgimproved only vitamin C status. Suplementation of multi vitamin-mineral reduced free radicals byimproving superoxide dismutase (SOD) status. Keywords: multi vitamin-mineral supplementation, superdioxide dismutase status, vitamin Estatus, viin C status.

Abstract

THE DEVELOPMENT OF PARTNERSHIP INSTRUMENT OF “DESA SIAGA” IN SUBANG DISTRICT, WEST JAVA PROVINCEThe successful of “Desa Siaga” as one of the forms of Community Based Health Activities (CBHA)depends on, among others, the good partnership of different elements in the community, especiallythe  partnership between  health  providers  with  the community.  Desa  Siaga is a  village that hasenough  human  resources,  abilities,  and  willingness  to  prevent  and  solve  any  health  problem, disasters and emergencies occurred in the village self reliantly. The objective of this study is todevelop the instrument that is able to measure the partnership of Desa Siaga in Indonesia. The studyis conducted in Subang District, since this district has been declared as the only district that has 100percent Desa Siaga in the whole district. The length of study is nine months, starting from February,2008.  The  method  of  study  is  a  mixed  paradigm,  which  is  a  combination  of  qualitative  andquantitative study methods. The methods of study used in the qualitative study are focus groupdiscussion (FGD), in-depth interview (IDI), and expert meeting. While in the quantitative study is across-sectional method. The result of this study were: Firstly, from the literature review it reveals thatthere are three main variables that are important in partnership, namely openness, equality andmutual benefit. Secondly, from FGD and IDI, these methods are able to elaborate three main variablesas mentioned above into 31 detailed variables. Thirdly, result from the expert meeting is the churnedout of the 31 detailed variables into 52 detailed variables. Fourthly, by using factor analysis of theopinions prompted from 172 respondents, we are able to subtract these 52 detailed variables into 17main variables that are the important to determine the degree of partnership of Desa Siaga. These 17main variables, then, are to be used as the main variables in the development of instrument tomeasure the degree of partnership of Desa Siaga. This instrument has been tested in 30 villages inSubang District. The results are: 17 villages with good partnerships and the remaining 13 with lesssatisfactory partnerships. If we cross-tabulate the result from the study, it reveals that villages whichfall into “good” categorization tend to have good partnership in Desa Siaga.

Abstract

THE EFFECT OF MULTIVITAMIN MINERAL SUPPLEMENTATION ON NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND HEALTHUse of multivitamin mineral (MVM) supplement has grown rapidly over the past several decades.According to several studies, supplement users tend to have higher micronutrient intakes from theirdiet than nonusers. Consequently, they have an increased intake but are also more likely to exceedthe upper level. The study was aimed to analyze the effect of MVM supplementation on renal functionthrough the double blind randomized controlled trial. Subjects were 93 of the female workers in PTRicky Putra Globalindo Tbk, Citeureup, Bogor who were randomly allocated to three treatments. Thefirst received only placebo (without vitamin C and MVM); the second received 1000 mg vitamin C; andthe third received MVM supplement that contains 1000 mg vitamin C, 45 mg vitamin E, 700 µg vitaminA, 6,5 mg vitamin B6, 400 µg folic acid, 9,6 µg vitamin B12, 10 µg vitamin D, 10 mg Zn, 110 µg Se, 0,9mg Cu, and 5 mg Fe. The supplements were distributed and consumed daily during 10 weeks. Themean change before and after study were tested with t paired test. The results showed the BMI,systolic and diastolic blood pressure, urea and creatinine blood serum were not significantly differentbefore and after study (p0,05). The distribution of female workers based on BMI showed that morethan half of them have normal nutritional status (BMI 18,5-24,9 kg/m2). The distribution based onsystolic and diastolic blood pressure showed that most of them were not hypertension (systolic 140mmHg, diastolic 90 mmHg); and the distribution based on urea and creatinine showed that most ofthem have normal status (urea 8,0-25,0 mg/dl; creatinine 0,6-1,5 mg/dl).Keywords: food supplement, BMI, blood pressure, urea, creatinine.

Abstract

THE EFFECT OF TEMPE EXTRACT ON THE MECHANISM AND RATE OF CHANGES OF β-CAROTEN IN CHILI SAUCEChili sauce has the potential to be used as a vehicle for vitamin A fortification in the form of β-carotene, since it can be added to various foods. However, we need information about the resistanceof β-carotene in chili sauce during processing and storage. The objectives of this study are: toidentify the degradation patterns of β-carotene in chili sauce which contains tempe extract in variousconcentration during processing and storage in room temperature, and to identify the mathematicsmodel of β-carotene degradation. This study consists of three steps: preparing tempe extract usingtempe inoculum; preparing chili sauce; and analysis of changes of β-carotene in chili sauce duringprocessing and storage. The results of this study are: the tempe produced rendement extract of 14,18% with 3-hydroxianthranilic acid concentration of 33,5 mg/100 grams dried tempe; tempe extract was able toinhibit the changes of β-carotene in chili sauce caused by heating and storage in room temperature;β-carotene changes in chili sauce during storage in room temperature with and without tempe extractare following the null reaction order; mathematics model of β-carotene changes in chili sauce duringroom temperature storage can be used to determine β-carotene concentrations in storage timeintervals through kinetic reaction analysis. Keywords: chili sauce, tempe extract, β-carotene, fortification

Abstract

sIgALACTOFERRIN LEVEL IN BREAST MILKBreast milk offers innumerable immunological components that are important for reduction of infantmorbidity and mortality. Breast milk protects against infections in breastfed newborns mainly viasecretory IgA (sIgA) antibodies, but also most likely via several other factors such as the bactericidallactoferrin. The purpose of this article is to determine the levels of sIgA and lactoferrin of breast milkfrom Indonesian women in Pandeglang. sIgA and lactoferrin in breast milk were measured crosssectionally in postpartum women between lactation days 14 -28 using ELISA. Results showed thatthe mean level of sIgA from 137 breast milk samples was 2.11 ± 3.5 mg/ml and that of lactoferrin from138 samples was 3.73±4.05 mg/ml. The mean levels of sIgA and lactoferrin in this group are lowerwhen compared with other published values. Keywords: breast milk, secretory IgA (sIgA), lactoferrin

Abstract

MATERNAL MORTALITY IN INDONESIA(AN ANALYSIS OF THE 1994-2007 IDHS DATA)Maternal mortality is one of the main indicators of a community’s health status. It also reflects theperformance of a country’s health system. Almost 90 percents of maternal mortality can be preventedby, among others, maternal health care programs, nutrition improvement programs, family planningprograms, and increasing women’s education level. This paper has two objectives. The first objectiveis to describe maternal mortality ratios and its trend which are obtained from the 1994, 1997, 2002-2003 and 2007 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) results. The second objective is toanalyze factors influencing maternal mortality ratios in Indonesia. This information would be usefulfor policy makers to improve maternal health care programs. The 1994 IDHS used both direct andindirect methods, known as ”sisterhood method”, while the 1997, 2002-2003, and 2007 IDHS usedonly direct method to estimate maternal mortality rates and ratios. The surveys’ results show adeclining trend in maternal mortality for the five-year period prior to the surveys. The maternalmortality ratios according to the 1994, 1997, 2002/03 and 2007 IDHS are 390, 334, 307, and 228 per100,000 live births respectively. However, due to high sampling errors, it is difficult to concludewhether a decline in maternal mortality ratios has occurred during the last 20 years. The 1994, 1997,2002-2003 and 2007 IDHS results also demonstrate the effects of maternal health care programs onmaternal mortality ratios. Therefore, this paper concludes that the quality of maternal health careprograms need to be improved, which include antenatal, delivery and postnatal care, and also familyplanning programs. Keywords: Maternal mortality rate and ratio, Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey, maternalhealth care programs.
