Abstract

Smallholder oil palm plantations are still facing the challenge of solidity in increasing their collective action to influence the supply chain of the national and global palm oil industry. This study aims to analyze the upstream system of smallholder palm oil production in building the sustainability of the supply chain of the national palm oil industry from a supply chain perspective. The data collection method combines an empirical study approach and literacy. An empirical study was carried out to search for institutional portraits of farmers. Furthermore, the search for commodity flows and palm oil agro-industry actors was carried out using a supply chain scheme framework. Based on the discussion, it is concluded that the disclosure of the flow of information related to the volume, price, and supply value differs according to the stakeholders involved. The supply chain of upstream palm oil production starts from the production line of oil palm plantations to the fabrication of CPO/PKO and the fabrication of their derivatives. Oil palm farmers are the weakest parties in accessing prices, volumes, and purchasing capacity information. Independent and plasma oil palm plantation smallholders are the most vulnerable to problems of uncertainty, transparency, transaction costs, and institutions, as well as the determination of an undisclosed price share between the cooperative as an intermediary and the core company. The downstream supply chain of palm oil agroindustry (olein, biodiesel, and chemical industry) is dominated by stakeholders affiliating with national private plantation companies within the framework of vertical supply synergies. CPO/ PKO palm derivative processed agroindustry, which has no vertical affiliation with national plantation companies on the upstream side, was the weakest actor in dealing with uncertainty in the supply of raw materials.

Abstract

CV Salama Nusantara had not conducted calculations regarding inventory, and there were still raw materials accumulating in the warehouse (overstock), which could result in a reduction in profit and an increase in company expenses. Additionally, it was observed that there was a shortage of raw materials (stockout), leading to production interruptions and the company incurring higher costs for reordering in smaller quantities. This research aimed to understand the inventory system when using ABC and EOQ methods and the difference in Total Inventory Cost (TIC) values between the company’s and EOQ methods The study showed that the ABC method in the simplisia inventory system classified category A with 66.58% of the investment value for one type of simplisia, requiring greater control compared to categories B and C. The use of EOQ for ginger simplisia resulted in the highest EOQ value of 134.72 kg with an ordering frequency of 7 times. The comparison of Total Inventory Cost (TIC) for simplisia such as red ginger, cardamom, sappanwood, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg showed that the EOQ method resulted in a lower TIC compared to the company’s policy, with differences of Rp2,365, Rp12,973, Rp14,116, Rp65,494, Rp4,768, Rp16,055, and Rp66,048, respectively.

Abstract

The government has issued a new policy regarding subsidized fertilizer regulated in Minister of Agriculture Regulation Number 10 of 2022. This causes the production costs borne by Rubaru Shallot farmers to be higher because the government subsidizes only two types of fertilizer. This condition can cause the competitiveness of shallots to decrease. This research aims to analyze the impact of changes in the fertilizer subsidy policy in 2022 on the Rubaru Local Variety Red Onion farming and its competitive and comparative advantages. The research location was determined purposively in Mandala Village. The total research sample was 42 people taken using the purposive sampling method. The data type used is primary data, which includes input prices, output prices, and profits in the form of market and social prices. Data analysis uses the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) model. The results of the analysis and discussion show that in general, the impact of the 2022 fertilizer subsidy change policy will still benefit farmers because even though the intervention reduces the profits obtained. Other results show that after these policy changes, the Rubaru Variety Shallot Farming in Mandala Village still has competitive and comparative competitiveness.

Abstract

Prostephanus truncatus is one of the most damaging post-harvest pests of stored maize in Africa. Research Institutions disseminated Various control strategies during the 1990s in West Africa with significant results. What is farmers’ perception of this pest in decades after those control strategies? This study aimed to assess determinants of farmers’ perception of current damages and losses caused by Prostephanus truncatus on stored maize in southern of the two countries (Benin and Togo). 300 maize farmers (150 from Togo and 150 from Benin) were randomly selected from 10 villages per country. Descriptive statistics were used in addition to Logit and Tobit regression analysis. The results showed that 38% of farmers (35% in Togo and 41% in Benin) still perceive Prostephanus truncatus as the most damaging pest of stored maize. Logit's results showed that factors influencing farmers’ perception of Prostephanus truncatus were group membership, contact with extension agents, and period of maize harvesting. The results from the Tobit regression model showed that factors such as the maize variety, the form of maize storage (with husk), and the storage period influence the extent of damage and loss caused by Prostephanus truncatus. Farmers still perceive Prostephanus truncatus as the main post-harvest pest causing high damage and losses on maize. It is recommended that further dissemination of maize storage technology to reduce postharvest losses.

Abstract

Food security ensures that sufficient, high-quality food is accessible to everyone for optimal consumption. Rising food prices can severely impact food security, especially for economically vulnerable groups. This research investigates the relationship between staple food prices and food security in Indonesia, focusing on factors like rice energy intake, egg protein intake, Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) per capita, and regional conditions on Java, Bali, and other islands. Data from all Indonesian provinces for 2018-2020 is analyzed using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression method. The Food Security Index (IKP) comes from the National Food Agency’s Food Security Index Book, and food price data is sourced from the National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS). Control data such as GRDP per capita is from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), while rice energy and egg protein intake data are from the Ministry of Agriculture’s Food Consumption Directory. The analysis reveals that rising rice prices from 2018 to 2020 significantly negatively affected food security. The study recommends evaluating rice price policies to maintain stability and enhance food accessibility. Similar evaluations for egg prices are also suggested to ensure protein availability for the community.

Abstract

The agricultural extension system is a whole series of development of abilities, knowledge, skills and attitudes of main actors and business actors through extension. The agricultural extension system in Indonesia has experienced quite dynamic ups and downs since the COVID-19 pandemic hit this country. The extension system has changed in line with the policies taken by the government in response to Covid-19. This research aims to determine the effect of differences in agricultural extension systems before and during COVID-19 in the Malang Regency. This research method is descriptive qualitative with data analysis using Structural Equation Modeling. The research analysis results show significant differences in the agricultural extension system before and during COVID-19 in Malang Regency. During the pandemic, there have been significant changes in agricultural extension methods. Online methods and information technology are increasingly dominant, while face-to-face meetings have decreased drastically. Even though online methods are increasing, there are challenges in information accessibility for some farmers, especially farmers who live in rural areas with limited technological infrastructure. Farmer participation in extension activities tends to decrease during the pandemic. Factors such as technological limitations, unstable internet connections, and difficulty understanding online material are the main causes. The Covid-19 pandemic has also had a significant economic impact on farmers. The main challenges faced by farmers during the pandemic are limited market access, increasing prices of agricultural inputs, and decreasing selling prices for agricultural products.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the export-oriented Arabica coffee plantations experienced production and productivity constraints due to decreased maintenance costs; besides, export opportunities were constrained by regulations issued by several countries requiring the product to be sterile from the COVID-19 virus. export. Based on the above phenomenon, this study aims to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Arabica coffee agribusiness, especially the profitability and competitiveness of Arabica coffee during the pandemic. The method used to select the area is the production center area around Mount Ijen, the Ijen Ring Region. The research is descriptive, combined research (mixed methods), and the method of collecting data uses primary and secondary data, as well as purposive sampling and incidental sampling with observation and interviews. The analysis tool uses competitiveness and policy with PAM (Policy Analysis Matrix). Arabica coffee during the pandemic is still profitable both financially (privately) and economically (socially), has great competitiveness and export opportunities, and is indicated to be able to compete with similar commodities, both imported and domestic products.
