Abstract

The concept of murtad (apostasy) in Islam has undergone a significant epistemological transformation throughout the course of Islamic intellectual history. Initially framed within a theological-doctrinal paradigm, apostasy was understood as an act of disbelief and betrayal of the Muslim community (ummah), often met with severe punitive responses grounded in classical jurisprudence. Over time, however, particularly in modern and contemporary contexts, this understanding has shifted toward a more sociological perspective. Apostasy is now increasingly interpreted through lenses of individual autonomy, identity transformation, and the interplay between religious authority and state power. This study traces the epistemological evolution of apostasy, from classical fiqh and kalam discourses to modern critical and humanistic interpretations. Utilizing a historical-hermeneutic approach combined with discourse analysis, the paper argues that the concept of murtad is not epistemologically static but contextually dynamic, shaped by the sociopolitical and cultural shifts within Muslim societies across different historical periods. Keywords: apostasy, murtad, Islamic thought, epistemology, sociology of religion, theologi, hermeneutics

Abstract

This article aims to examine the complex relationship between football, public religious expression, social media, and interreligious engagement. The recent phenomenon of a China’s national club goalkeeper which performed like Islamic gesture in the stadium will be the main concern. Using a qualitative case study approach, this article argues that the performed public religious gestures and actions which are amplified in the social media platforms could potentially activate the questions of beliefs and identities. It also could intensify the occurrence of interreligious engagement. The research data are gained from the social media and existing library resources. Analyzing both positive and negative responses towards the contested Islamic gesture phenomenon, this article uses the theory of Public Value as has been grounded by Edoardo Ongaro and the theory of Contact Hypothesis by Gordon Allport. The study finds that the non-religious settings have been neglected in the mainstream discourse of interreligious engagement. It reveals also that the questions of belief become something constant to be asked when the religious gestures or practices are performed publicly in non-religious settings, especially by strangers.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and strategies of persuasive communication employed by the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah communities in building religious harmony in the Sidimpuan Baru Complex, Padangsidimpuan City. The background of this research is based on the social reality that these two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia have differences in religious understanding, yet they coexist harmoniously in the community. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of NU and Muhammadiyah members, community leaders, and local government officials. The results show that the forms of persuasive communication employed include open dialogue, mutual respect for differences, and active involvement in joint social and religious activities. Among the various persuasive communication techniques, the primary strategy used is the integration technique, which emphasizes emotional similarity, social closeness, and the use of inclusive language. Despite differences in worship practices, such as qunut and the number of rak'ahs in tarawih, the community is able to manage these differences peacefully and productively. The harmony created is inseparable from the role of religious and community leaders, as well as local government support, which collectively fosters a climate of tolerance and cooperation. Thus, persuasive communication based on integration has become an essential tool in strengthening inter-religious relationships and creating strong and sustainable religious harmony in the Sidimpuan Baru community.

Abstract

Abstract Research Objective – This study aims to describe the rights of children toward their parents based on the thoughts of Syekh Ahmad Husein Ali Salam in Ḥaququ al-Wālidayn. The research focuses on identifying what rights must be fulfilled by parents from the moment a child is born, and how these responsibilities shape the child’s physical, emotional, and spiritual development. Methodology – This research uses a library research approach by examining the primary text Ḥaququ al-Wālidayn and supporting studies related to child rights in Islamic education. Data were analyzed using content analysis to understand the concepts presented in classical texts and compare them with findings from contemporary scholarly works. Findings – The study reveals that every child has essential rights such as receiving a good name, breastfeeding and basic care, affection, fairness, protection from harmful environments, and early religious education. These rights are not only related to physical needs but also emotional and spiritual aspects important for developing good character. The findings also show that parents’ obligations in raising their children are lifelong, involving continuous guidance, role-modelling, and prayer. Research Implications/Limitations – This study highlights the relevance of classical Islamic teachings in today’s context and shows that fulfilling children’s rights remains a challenge, especially with modern issues such as digital exposure. The research is limited to textual analysis and does not include field data. Originality/Value – This study contributes by connecting the classical understanding of child rights from Ḥaququ al-Wālidayn with current social and technological conditions. It offers a comprehensive view of children’s rights in Islam and emphasizes the long-term responsibilities of parents in shaping a child’s character.

Abstract

This study explores how Muslim students from Thailand belonging to a religious minority in their home country negotiate and reinterpret Islamic ethics (akhlak) when immersed in Indonesia’s majority-Muslim environment. As the sole Thai international student in her program at UIN K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan, the researcher employs autoethnography and in-depth interviews to examine the moral tensions, adaptations, and spiritual reflections that arise from this cultural and religious transition. Grounded in classical Islamic ethical frameworks, particularly Al-Ghazali’s concept of tazkiyat al-nafs (soul purification) and mujahadah al-nafs (inner struggle), the research investigates whether living among a Muslim majority reinforces ethical commitment or leads to moral complacency due to perceived social conformity. Data were collected through personal reflective journals, semi-structured interviews with fellow international Muslim students, and analysis of Islamic ethical texts published between 2015 and 2025. Preliminary findings suggest that minority identity fosters heightened moral awareness, while the homogeneous Islamic environment in Indonesia presents both opportunities for spiritual growth and challenges related to performative religiosity. The study contributes original insights at the intersection of Ilmu Akhlak, psycho-spirituality, and intercultural ethics, offering a nuanced understanding of how context shapes moral agency among Muslim youth. Limitations include the small sample size and reliance on self-reported data; however, the depth of reflective analysis ensures theoretical rigor. This research holds value for educators, counselors, and Islamic scholars seeking to support minority Muslim students in transnational religious settings.
