Abstract

Background: Hypoestrogenism is a condition characterized by a deficiency of the hormone estrogen. This condition is commonly experienced by women who are menopausal or those using hormonal contraceptives like Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate. Exposure to this synthetic progesterone can suppress the production of estrogen, leading to a decrease in the expression of estrogen receptors. One alternative to overcome the problem of hypoestrogenism is the use of natural ingredients known as phytoestrogens, which are chemically and functionally similar to estrogen. Bengkuang is known as one of the sources of phytoestrogens. Purpose: This study aims to assess the impact of bengkuang ethanol extract on estrogen levels and the expression of estrogen receptor beta in a hypoestrogenic rat model exposed to DMPA. Methods: This experimental study involved 25 rats, which were divided into five groups. One group served as the negative control and did not receive DMPA or Bengkuang extract, while the four treatment groups were administered DMPA at a dose of 2,7 mg every three days, repeated four times. Three of the treatment groups received Bengkuang extract at varying doses. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test. Results: The findings indicated significant differences (p < 0,05) in estrogen levels and the expression of estrogen receptor beta. Conclusion: Administration of bengkuang extract can enhance the female reproductive system with low estrogen levels.

Abstract

Background: Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARI) is a common illness caused by viral or bacterial infections, often perceived as non-threatening. ARI symptoms range from mild to severe and depend on pathogens, environmental factors, and host immunity. Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors associated with ARI symptoms in toddlers, focusing on home environmental conditions in Babadan Village, Tulungagung Regency. Methods: The study was conducted in 2023–2024 using a cross-sectional design with 60 respondents. Participants were mothers of toddlers showing ARI symptoms, living in Babadan, and willing to participate. Data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets assessing home ventilation, air pollution, smoking behaviors, and ARI symptoms. Statistical analysis with Chi-Square was used to evaluate the relationship between environmental factors and ARI symptoms. Results: The findings indicated significant relationships between ARI symptoms in toddlers and home ventilation (p = 0.004), indoor air pollution (p = 0.012), and family members' smoking behavior (p = 0.017). Among these factors, smoking behavior posed the highest risk for ARI symptoms in toddlers. Conclusion: The study concludes that poor home ventilation, indoor air pollution, and smoking significantly contribute to ARI symptoms in toddlers, with smoking behavior being the most critical risk factor. Addressing these environmental issues could reduce ARI risks in children.

Abstract

Background: Anemia in pregnant women is generally caused by unmet iron needs. The impact of anemia in pregnant women includes, BBLR (Low Birth Weight), IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), premature birth and postnatal death. Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of giving BitMa juice (beetroot juice and honey) on increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women in PMB Caecilia Yunita Rahayu Malang City. Methods: The design of this study used a quasi-experiment with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample of this study was 32 pregnant women with a purposive sampling technique, have Hb levels <11 g/dL, are willing to be research respondents and cooperate by consuming BitMa juice during the research process, are willing to undergo Hb examination during the pre-test and post-test. The independent variable of this study was beetroot juice and honey, the dependent variable of this study was an increase in hemoglobin levels. The analysis used the Independent Sample T-Test. Results: The results of the study showed that the average Hb level of respondents before receiving BitMa juice treatment was 10.24 gr/dL. The average Hb level of pregnant women who were given BitMa juice was 12.85 gr/dL. The results of the Independent T-Test statistical test showed p = 0.000 <0.05, which means that there is an effect of BitMa juice (Beetroot and Honey) on increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with a significant increase in hemoglobin levels of 20%. Conclusion: Giving BitMa juice (Beetroot and Honey) is effective in increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women, because of the iron, folic acid, and vitamin C content in beetroot and honey. So pregnant women with anemia are advised to consume BitMa juice.
