Abstract

Besides his architectural works, Indian architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi is also renowned for expressing his ideas through his paintings. Inspired by Indian-Mughal miniatures, these paintings present his architectural works by depicting an idea so prevalent in Indian culture as well as in his works: complexity. To investigate this notion in a quantitatively measurable manner, this paper investigates one of the architect’s most significant works, Sangath, depicted both in Doshi’s painting and in the form of conventional orthographic drawings, using a comparative fractal dimension analysis. The result proves that the fractal dimension of Doshi’s painting of Sangath is significantly higher than those of the orthographic drawings showing the building’s exterior: block plan, front elevation, and right elevation. The conclusion suggests that Doshi’s painting is capable of presenting an idea of complexity more prominently than conventional architectural drawings. Abstract

Mosques are a place for physical activity that has great potential to become a cluster for the spread of the COVID-19 virus. At the beginning of the pandemic, mosques were prohibited from operating to carry out various Islamic religious activities, especially congregational prayers. Mosque administrators play a role in communicating the importance of maintaining a safe distance between prayers to contain the spread of the virus. Visual communication with distance markers between worshipers is an efficient way of implementing social distancing in the prayer room. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative for secondary data. The approach used is desk research. This research finds that there is no standard signage for physical distancing as an implementation of health protocol in the mosque. This is indicated by various signage configurations and approaches. There is a need for congregation prayer physical distancing visual signage standardization on a regional or national scale. Abstract

Mosque as a place of worship for Muslims demands to provide the maximum comfort for its users to make worship more solemn. In fact, many mosques do not pay attention to the comfort of the room, including the acoustic design. This research was conducted using I-SIMPA software, a software used to perform acoustic simulations involving geometric and acoustic parameters on architectural elements in the room with the aim of analyzing the reverberation level in the Makassar Grand Mosque space. The result obtained from analysis on the first floor shows the lowest reverberation time (RT) for 1.13 seconds at points 5, 6, and 8 at 8000 Hz. Moreover, the highest RT is 4.1 seconds at point 5 at 250 Hz and points 2 and 6 at 500 Hz which is exceeds the standard of recommended RT. On the second floor, The lowest RT is 1.38 seconds at point 1 at 8000 Hz and the highest is 4.86 seconds at point 3 at 1000 Hz. The reverberation time in second floor is longer compared to the first floor due to the volume and shape of the room. Abstract

Population growth and expansion of urban and industrial areas in peri-urban areas and customary ulayat areas lead to spatial changes that have an impact on differences in the definition of the area, boundaries, location settings, and control of Mamak Pusako over collective inheritance land. One of the customary areas that have experienced this development is Tarok Nagari, the Head of Hilalang, Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra, which is called the rantau which is the locus of this research. This spatial change research study needs to be carried out to examine the potential for spatial planning for the purposes of inheritance from generation to generation and the next generation. In this study, the method used is the normative approach of ulayat inheritance. The analysis was carried out qualitatively related to land use patterns with a normative approach (customary law). While quantitative is used for mapping the pattern of inheritance of customary land with the Behavior Mapping technique. Strengthening data from informants regarding the description of regional development is carried out with the support of Design Guidance Structure theory, land use triangle theory, regulations and related literature. Temporal data based on the period before and after the land inheritance process were obtained through interviews with indigenous peoples' leaders and resource persons as well as literature studies on related customary lands. The results of the research on inheritance land spatial planning based on the customary law approach (ulayat) provide ambiguity in setting and spatial arrangement. Meanwhile, the theoretical approach to Space Syntax is the existence of a network from the development of functions, and the potential for access. Where this process cannot be seen by the Mamak Pusako, it raises the issue of lack of spatial control that is far away and developing at this time. Key Words: ulayat land, customary law, spatial planning, behavior mapping.
