Abstract

Study was conducted to evaluate the quality and productivity of water used during two period catfish culture for 5 months. Catfish fries were cultured in fiberglass containers for two and  three  months  without draining. During 5 months, 0, 5, 10, 20 or 40  percent of total water volume were replaced daily. The quality and productivity of water were observed every months. Results  indicated that  the decrease of water qualities were more notebly when the water replacement in the culture system was carried out in less portion. However, the less portion of the water replacement made higher water fertility for the growth of phytoplankton.

Abstract

Artificial incubations of red tilapia eggs and fry were conducted in the effort to increase fish seed production and its quality. These experiments were done to determine suitable water temperature for egg incubation and larvae rearing. Four different water temperatures, 24, 27, 30, and 33oC with variance 1oC and ambient temperature were tested in triplicates. One liter of plastic incubators made from soft drink bottles were set to water re-circulation system and provided with filter means. The fertilized eggs were stocked at 150 eggs. The hatching rate of egg increased as the increase of water temperature. The increase of water temperature decreased the incubation time of eggs, but increased hatching rate and the growth of larvae. The optimum water temperature was 29,87oC.

Abstract

Shark is one of low value fishes in Yogyakarta. In order to increase the value, shark was processed into surimi. In this research, shark was processed into surimi with different  washing time frequency (0, 2, 4, and 6 times) to investigate the gel properties of shark surimi.Gel strength of shark surimi increased as the washing time frequency increased from 0 to 6 times. The 4 and 6 washing time showed similar gel strength and sensory characteristics. Shark surimi with 6 washing time and pre-incubation at 40oC followed by cooking at 90oC produced the highest gel strength.

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) was cultured with an aquatic plant, water hyacinth/eceng gondok  (Eichornia crassipes), kangkung air (Ipomea aquatica) or kapu-kapu (Pistia stratiotes) in concrete ponds, for 3 months. Catfish cultured without aquatic plant was used as a control. The experiment was carried out to evaluate the survival rate as well as the growth of fish and aquatic plants. The survival rates of catfish cultured with I. aquatica, E. crassipes, and P. stratiotes were 76, 87, and 98%, respectively. In addition the survival rate of catfish cultured without any aquatic plant was 93%. The weight gain of catfish was 14,1-16,2 kg per pond. Whereas, the total weight gains of aquatic plant were 37,0,  27,7 and 7,7 kg per pond for E. crassipes, P. stratiotes, and I. aquatica,. Respectively. Dissolved oxygen, and the concentrations of NH3, NH4+ and PO43- in water with aquatic plants were higher than that of in water without aquatic plant. However, the concentration of CO2 was higher in water with aquatic plant.

Abstract

Manyung is one of low value fish in Yogyakarta. In order to increase the value, manyung was processed into surimi. In this research, manyung was processed into surimi with different heating temperatures (40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 70oC) and washing time frequency (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 times) to investigate the gel properties of manyung surimi. Gel strength of manyung surimi increased as washing time treatment increased from 0 to 5 times. Statistical analysis showed that the 4 washing time and 5 washing time have similar gel strength and sensory characteristics. Manyung surimi with 5 washing time and pre-incubation at 60oC followed by cooking at 90oC produced the highest gel strength.
