Abstract

There have been a number of research studies that point out that students’ self-efficacy has a close relationship with their academic achievement. Giving speeches in English requires a high level of self-efficacy because confidence and English skills are both needed when performing the assignment in front of an audience and examiners. This research tries to investigate the students’ self-efficacy in giving speeches in EFL classes and their performance, which is reflected in their academic achievements. The research involved 89 non-English department university students in a non- English speaking country. The speech course was given to the students in their fourth semester after they completed English courses focusing on reading and writing, speaking and listening, and extensive reading in their first, second and third semester respectively. Questionnaires are distributed to the students to find out their level of self-efficacy. Their achievements were assessed based on the rubrics provided and distributed to the students at the beginning of the course. The data were then analyzed using SPSS.The research found that self-efficacy in English speech delivery did correlate to the academic achievement.

Abstract

This research was aimed at seeking out the impacts of Subtitle for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH), Emotional Subtitle (ES), and Caption in the story comprehension capability of the first grade students at SLBN Bolon Colomadu upon the Naruto series episode 89. The research is experimental in which the total sampling is employed since there were three students only in the school. A level finder test was bestowed upon the three to ensure that they shared the same level on story comprehension. A capability test upon the story comprehension was executed to recognize the students’ comprehension on the story of Naruto. A questionnaire session was given to acknowledge the opinions of the students regarding with SDH, ES, and Caption. Analyzing the data, it was found out that SDH received 43.34% subjective positive view and 6.6% objective positive view, ES received 73% subjective positive view and 17% objective positive view, and Caption received 34% subjective positive view and 34% objective positive view. This result pointed out that Caption performed better than the other two because Caption sparked more objective positive view than the other two.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ critical thinking as reflected in their argumentative writing in one state university in Serang, Banten. This study used a case study research design which employed two data collection techniques, i.e. the documentation of students’ essays and interview. The data were, then, analyzed based on the theory of Critical Thinking (CT) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) which were validated by triangulation. The study revealed two findings related to the research questions. First, results of the text analysis showed that despite their ability to show their critical thinking in their writing, students’ texts still showed that the verbalization of the students’ critical thinking was less sophisticated and explicit. Second, as the interview data revealed, students’ inability occurred due to their limited knowledge of the issue and lack of knowledge in applying their critical thinking in writing particularly in the expository genre. The findings above suggest that the students need more guidance so that they have a better command of some critical thinking components to develop their critical thinking, especially their capacity to argue, to state opinions and stance explicitly and carefully. All these may also reflect the urgency to provide the students in the site with a great deal of assistance in a writing process and efforts to expose students to some teaching programs with a view to improving their critical thinking in the future.  ABSTRACT

Abstract

The development of critical thinking (CT) skills has become a key goal for educators in first and second language contexts. There is evidence that the use of such activities has still not become widespread in a number of ELT situations. One reason for this may be lack of awareness about how levels of thinking can be conceptualized in ELT activities. It is argued that learners studying English for general purposes (EGP) have a particular need for activities which are not only linguistically manageable but also cognitively challenging. This paper reports on a program designed by the author at a university in Iran, which used taxonomy of CT skills drawn up by Facione (1990) to probe the effect of critical thinking strategies training on reading comprehension of Iranian EFL students. In so doing, 240 male and female Iranian EFL students were selected and screened into two proficiency levels based on the TOEFL tests. Each proficiency group was divided into critical and non-critical group. The results suggested CT skills significantly affected EFL learners’ reading comprehension performance. However, the effect of critical thinking strategy training didn’t vary across different language proficiency levels. Overall, the findings provide empirical support for the facilitative effect of critical thinking strategy training on reading comprehension performance of EFL learners.

Abstract

Plot, the ―sequence of interrelated events‖ (Foster in Pickering and Hoeper 1981:14), is a building element of literary works. This literary element assists in text reading and interpretation processes because the element shows the sequences of interrelated events that help in understanding text development. In the processes of text reading and text interpretation, plot is commonly analyzed literarily with the specific concern only to the elemental sequences of a plot. The concern to the sequences makes the plot analysis as the description of a certain construction, a text structure. Actually, plot analysis could also be conducted linguistically by analyzing certain linguistic elements and the contribution of these linguistic elements to plot description, as discussed in stylistics. The appearances of the stylistic and structural methods require two analysis types: the linguistic and the literary analyses. The stylistic method covers the linguistic analyses of the lexical items and their semantic sense relations, and the structural method covers a literary discussion on the plot sequences of the three texts. The linguistic based and literary based analyses are interrelated each other by the description of the semantic sense relations of the chosen lexical items in order to describe the sequencing of the texts‘ plot.Based on the analysis, the three Doyle‘s detective short stories are built from similar plot sequences. Each sequence is also composed from some other similar features which are arranged in a similar chronology. In summary, three plot sequences –exposition, action and climax— are built from two main features, and the other two plot sequences –resolution and conclusion— are developed by three composing features. Exposition consists of the narrative of a pre undisturbed situation and the narrative of the crime. Action consists of the deducting efforts prior to the crime scene investigation and the described actions taken during the crime scene investigation. Climax is the revelation of the tools used in the murders and the murderers themselves. Resolution shows the crime solving by mentioning the relationship of the information in the introduction, particularly the second part, and the actions taken in the Action. Conclusion ends the stories by stating punishment for the guilty murderers, the reward for the victims or the falsely accused participants and the common conclusion for public consumption. Among the five, a close similarity is seen in three plot sequences: exposition, action and resolution. Their relation is proven by the similar lexical items used in the features of the three plot sequences. The similarity causes a linkage of logics of a detective story.

Abstract

The emergence of Machine Translation, known as MT has given a new hope to abridge the problems in translation. Ideally, it is designed to create a fully automatic high quality translation (FAHQT). People do hope that a bulk number of work deals with translating a text from source language to target language can be done easily and accurately. Further, it is believed that machine translation will be cheaper compared to ‘human translation’. The question is does this machine really translate a text well? Unfortunately, many facts show that machine translation produces an unsatisfying translation result. The main factor underlying this fact is that this machine failed to abridge linguistics complexity, which is characterized as context dependent, although it has been designed in such a way to overcome that linguistics complexity. Meanwhile, under the right circumstances, many believed that MT systems are a powerful tool. This paper focuses on the nature of machine translation and the possibility in empowering it. After recognizing the nature of machine translation, it is hoped that the users of the machine can take any appropriate actions to make the benefit of machine translation.
