Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

This study investigates the benefits of literature on the talent development and self-confidence of high school students participating in extracurricular English Club. Literature, derived from the Sanskrit word 'shastra', serves as a guide and source of information and includes various forms such as drama, poetry, tales, and speeches. Recognizing the importance of literature in developing talents and self-confidence, this study examines the role of extracurricular English Club in creating a supportive environment for students. Extracurricular activities, including English Club, play an important role in the character and academic development of young people. In response to the growing importance of English proficiency, some educational institutions have introduced English extracurricular programs to showcase students' potential and interests. This study, conducted at MAN 1 Kota Malang, East Java, used a descriptive qualitative approach to assess the impact of English clubs on students' literacy skills, self-confidence and talent development. The results showed that the English club at MAN 1 Kota Malang focuses on improving students' English skills, especially speaking. Through speaking, poetry, storytelling and drama exercises, students develop their imagination, analytical ability and general communication skills. Literature-oriented exercises help students overcome shyness, fear of making mistakes, and anxiety, and improve self-esteem. The study concludes that incorporating literature into extracurricular activities not only improves language skills, but also contributes to the development of talent and self-confidence, which are crucial for future success.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the verbal and visual elements in a school brochure, namely the brochure of Yayasan Perguruan Sultan Iskandar Muda, North Sumatra. The brochure of this school was downloaded from the school's Instagram regard that's chosen aimlessly. The last result of the research reveals that the brochure has all general structure which is lead, view or display, emblem (verbal), announcement, enhancer, emblem (visual), and call- and- visit information. The finding of academy or school brochure completely supports all the theories of this research. The elements of this visual and verbal support each other and cohere to convey a communication to the anthology. The communication conducted to readers come more conclusive, and it attract their interest to school as the source of formal education.

Abstract

The aims of this research was to find out the students’ difficulties into English and to know how the students were cope with the difficulties in translating descriptive text from Indonesian into English at the eighth grade students of junior high school Tri Dharma Palembang. The descriptive qualitative research was used in this sample of this research. The sample of this research was the eighth grade students at Junior High School Tri Dharma Palembang. There were fifteen participants of students and there was one participant of their English teacher. The data was taken by using test and interview as the instrument. The research finding showed that the highest percentage of students’ difficulties in translating was grammar (27%). the highest number of the students’ grammar difficulties was phrase (45%). The second difficulty faced by students was clarity and cohesion & naturalness (24%). The third difficulty face by students was spelling & style (14%) and the last difficulty was realizing & understanding (11%). Based on the result of students and their English teacher interview matrix, it showed that students asked their friends and teacher to help solving their problem. It could be concluded that students had difficulties in translating Indonesian descriptive text into English was Grammar and the students asked their friends or teacher to give them a help.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of the problem-based learning model on the ability to write argumentative essays of Malay-Indonesian study program students in the 4th semester audio visual course. In this research, this research used a quasi-experimental method by conducting a pre-test and post-test in two groups. This type of experimental research method uses a nonequivalent control group design, where the experimental class is treated and the control class is not treated. This nonequivalent control group design is almost the same as the pretest and posttest control group design, only in this design the experimental and control groups are not chosen randomly. Data collection techniques use tests. Data analysis techniques start from the normality test, homogeneity test, and continue with hypothesis testing.research data,So that post-test or final test data was obtained which was then analyzed using a two-sided T test, giving results that students who were given problem-based learning model learning treatment experienced more improvement compared to students who were not given problem-based learning strategies. This means that it is in accordance with the proposed hypothesis and it can be concluded that there is a difference in the ability to write argumentative essays between students who are given a problem-based learning model and students who are not given a problem-based learning model.

Abstract

Reading is an essential thing in English language skills. To support reading skills, it is necessary to have introductory activities before reading the texts in a classroom (pre-reading activities). Pre-reading activities are necessary to help students understand the reading texts. Reading difficulties can arise if it is not accompanied by a positive perception of pre-reading activities. Therefore, this study will aim to find out the various types of pre-reading activities in the Reading for Gist class and students' perceptions of these activities. This study uses qualitative methods with interviews and questionnaires as the tools of collecting data. The participants in this study were 39 students who took Reading for Gist class. The results of this study show that there are four types of pre-reading activities in Reading for Gist class. The perception given by most students in that class is positive. Students feel that the pre-reading activities are very helpful for them in improving their reading skills.

Abstract

This study was designed to know the significant improvement after using busuu application for listening comprehension achievement. It aimed at finding out how applying busuu application could be used to see significant improvement and significant mean difference between the students use busuu application and who did not use busuu application in first graders listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 3 Palembang. This research consisted of two variables, i.e. independent variable (busuu application) and dependent variable (listening comprehension achievement). The research was quantitative method quasi-experimental design. In this study, researcher used especially experimental group and control group. The sample of this research could be 66 students at first graders of SMPN 3 Palembang. After calculating data, the researcher concluded that students' listening can be improve both before and after using the busuu application. The mean results of the pupils' pre-test and post-tests serve as evidence for this. The result showed that there was significant mean difference on students’ listening comprehension because the t-obtained was higher than t-table = (3,966 > 1,997) with sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05 = .000 < 0.05. Which means that the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. Moreover, the listening comprehension was significantly improved in the experimental group. The researcher concluded that there was any significant improvement and significant mean difference in the students listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 03 Palembang after being taught using busuu application.

Abstract

Learning media is a communication tool used to transmit knowledge, speed up the learning process, and raise educational standards. One can use movies as educational resources. Films tell a variety of tales that embody moral principles, including cultural, social, and educational principles. The 2019 film Aladdin is one option for a movie. The 2019 film Aladdin is an adaption of the 1992 original animated version. Guy Richie directed and John August and Guy Richie wrote the 2019 film Aladdin. Finding the character-building qualities in the 2019 Aladdin film and outlining how those educational values are portrayed in the film are the goals of this study. In this study, the author uses the educational value theory of Zaim El Mubarok in Hamidy (2017) which divides the value of educational consist of two namely; values of being and values of giving. Primary sources are film themselves and secondary sources are transcripts, books sources. The researchers have found in this film, several educations values can be drawn namely: 1) There are four educational values that can be learned in the section on the value of being, are: honest, brave, confidence, purify.2) There are five educational values that can be learned in the section on the value of giving, namely: loyalty, respect, not selfish, love and affection. Abstract

This research aims to find out the factors behind the success of Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) as global phenomenon and the impacts they create on many social movements done by their fans called ARMY (Adorable Representative MC for Youth) in Indonesia. Many researches had been done dealing with the topic but less talked about the social movements done by Indonesian ARMY. The purpose of this study is to analyze the reason why BTS is loved by people of the universe and kinds of social movements done by Indonesian ARMY dedicated to the members. The writers used questionnaires as the instrument to collect the data and qualitative merthod to analyze it. Through analysis, the main reason of BTS, was identified as having a positive group boyband personality, smart and creative, having a sense of empathy, having an independent attitude, never giving up, loving family, and having a strong determination in life. The commitment of BTS ARMY’s causes positive impact similarly from their favorite idol.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors leading Nanisca, the main character in The Woman King movie, to prohibit Agojie members from forming families. The researchers employ Feminism and Postcolonialism theories, focusing on radical feminism to identify Nanisca's motivations. Additionally, Oppression theory is utilized to depict the oppression experienced by Agojie members and other citizens of Dahomey, Mahi, and small kingdoms. The qualitative approach, along with observation and library research, is employed for this study. The findings reveal two main factors behind Nanisca's prohibition: Agojie members' negative experiences with women trafficking, sexual abuse, and verbal/non-verbal oppression. To combat these issues, Nanisca employs radical feminist strategies and enforces a rule against warriors having families, symbolizing her resistance against patriarchal oppression

Abstract

This study aims to determine the values of Javanese society as reflected in Pengakuan Pariyem novel by Linus Suryadi AG. More specifically, this research is aimed to answer two problem questions, namely what the Javanese values are reflected in Pengakuan Pariyem novel.The rationality of the research is to give a better understanding of the Javanese values in Javanese. The method used in this study is a descriptive method, in the form of qualitative, with a sociological approach. In collecting the data, the writer used note-taking technique. The research applied some tools of analysis that developed in the study of literature such as Javanese Values and Cultural Studies. The result of this research brings two contributions namely theoretically and practically. From theoretically, is expected to provide more specific knowledge and information regarding Javanese values. Practically, it may provide helpful reference material for further researchers who are interested in relevant topics. The results of data analysis show that seven kinds of Javanese values are reflected in Pengakuan Pariyem novel: sungkan,halus,grapyak,isin,nrimo,polite, and humble.
