Abstract

This article aims to exploit the coup movement and power polemics that occurred in the Sultanate of Banten. The colonial politics of fighting against each other had succeeded in dividing the noble and religious elites in the palace of the Sultanate of Banten. Apart from that, the Coup Movement carried out by the noble elite Ratu Bagus Buang was a form of protest against Dutch colonial intervention in appointing a replacement for Sultan Zaenal Arifin as Ratu Syarifah. Queen Syarifah's policy of often excluding the noble elite from making policies and sending large amounts of pepper to the VOC, as well as her oppressive policies, have drawn protests from the common people and the nobility. The coup movement carried out by Ratu Bagus Buang had caused a serious polemic in the Sultanate of Banten which aimed to take over power from Ratu Syarifah and expel the VOC from Banten. This confirms that the Dutch colonial political strategy and the struggle for power that occurred in the Banten Sultanate from 1750-1752 have been the determinants of legal changes and social dynamics that gave rise to the existence of the Banten Sultanate.

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes the emergence of a Salafiyah (traditional) Islamic boarding school organization called Salafiyah Islamic Boarding School (Majelis Pesantren Salafiyah/MPS). This organization plays an important role in its efforts to bring out the role of Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools in the political context at the local and national levels. Some of the political momentum carried out by MPS includes organizing Salafiyah Islamic boarding school kyai in the Baros area (Serang district) and Cadasari (Pandeglang district) in advocating and fighting against national company suspected of destroying the water sources needed by residents in the area of Serang and Pandeglang districts, struggling for the Islamic boarding school regulation through the parliament of Banten Province, involving practically in the 2014 and 2019 Presidential Elections, and helping the government to decrease the 212 movement influence in Banten. The research results show that the emergence of MPS is a form of resistance identity, namely an identity that is created by actors who are marginalized or stigmatized by the logic of domination who then build channels of resistance and defense based on the principles of difference from or contrary to existing social institutions.
