Abstract

Abstract

This research is an investigation into the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital content in the context of the 2024 presidential election campaign in Indonesia. This research employs a descriptive qualitative methodology to examine the ways in which three presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs leverage AI technology and imaginary digital content in their campaign strategies. This research addresses the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and imaginary digital content as campaign strategies employed by three pairs ofcandidates in the 2024 presidential election. This research offers novel insights into the nexus between technology, digital media, and political processes. The analytical framework employed in this study is based on the political communication theories of Robert E. Denton, Judith S. Trent, and Robert V. Friedenberg. It focuses on the use of AI, message construction, image formation, use of media and communication channels, and audience segmentation and targeting. The findings revealed that the three candidate pairs employed disparate strategies regarding the utilization of AI and the visualization of imaginary digital content. The Prabowo-Gibran pair employed artificial intelligence extensively to cultivate a friendly and contemporary image. Ganjar-Mahfud employed artificial intelligence for the purposes of sentiment analysis and voter interaction. In contrast, the Anies-Muhaimin campaign employs chatbots with the objective of disseminating information regarding their policy positions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of new debt and dependency politics emerging from China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project in Southeast Asia. The main focus is to see how infrastructure projects funded through the BRI create unequal relations between countries that provide and receive debt. To understand this phenomenon, this study uses an International Political Economy approach with a dependency theory framework from Andre Gunder Frank and other thinkers. This theory views that the relationship between central and peripheral countries in the global system often results in economic and political dependency through debt instruments and structural control. The method used is qualitative descriptive with literature study techniques, including analysis of cases in Laos, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The research findings show that the BRI project not only brings consequences for physical development, but also strengthens China's dominant position fiscally, technologically, and policy-wise in Southeast Asian countries. This dependency indicates the existence of a subordinate reproductive structure in the international system that is disguised through economic cooperation.

Abstract

The increase in Indonesia's footwear export industry since 2019 has become an important marker for the success of Indonesia's commercial diplomacy in the footwear industry. Some trade and investment collaborations organized by the state are believed to be the key to the success of commercial diplomacy. Commercial diplomacy, in this context, refers to the economic activities undertaken by the state to bolster its national economy through trade and investment partnerships. Notably, non-state actors have played a crucial role in enhancing Indonesia's footwear exports by lobbying, advocating, promoting, and ensuring compliance with international standards. These actors have also contributed significantly to the industry's production innovation and human resource development. This research aims to show that non-state actors have an essential role in commercial diplomacy through a commercial diplomacy model using the experience of commercial diplomacy practices in the Indonesian footwear export industry. This research employs qualitative methods, including documentary studies and interviews, to illustrate how these non-state actors support a commercial diplomacy model. The findings indicate that their involvement facilitates trade and strengthens Indonesia's position in the global footwear market, notably as it ranks fourth among the world’s producers. By leveraging these collaborative efforts, Indonesia aims to capitalize on its historical successes and address challenges such as rising labor costs and fluctuating international demand.

Abstract

The study of young voters has become a topic of interest to various academics and a strategic issue in local political dynamics, especially in contesting the 2024 Merauke Regional Head Elections. This study analyzes the factors influencing young voters' preferences in determining their political choices. Using a quantitative approach with a survey method, this study involved 300 respondents from among young voters in Merauke Regency. Three main approaches in the study of voter behavior were used. Namely, the sociological, social-psychological, and rational choice theory approaches are used to understand the complexity of the factors that influence the electoral decisions of young voters. The results showed that the Joseph Gebze-Fauzun Hinayah pair received the highest support (46%) from young voters due to their combined bureaucratic and legislative experience. The Hendrikus Mahuze-H. Riduwan pair came second with 28% support, which shows the appeal of executive and technocratic experience in local government. Meanwhile, David Gepze and H. Kusmanto obtained 21% of the vote despite receiving support from the local political elite, indicating that the influence of traditional leaders and the political elite is no longer a dominant factor for young voters. These findings also show that young voters are more independent and rational in determining their political choices. The candidate's track record, leadership competence, and development vision and mission are more decisive factors than traditional factors such as ethnic affiliation or political elite recommendations. In addition, social media is the main source of political information for young voters, reinforcing the argument that digitalization has increased their political awareness. This study concludes that issue-based campaign strategies, policy transparency, and political communication through digital platforms are crucial factors in attracting the support of young voters in the contemporary political era.

Abstract

This research explains the analysis of citizenship politics in Indonesia, which experiences problems of injustice through a case study of the fishermen's resistance movement in Jakarta. Citizenship politics is the perspective used to explain the efforts of citizens in order to achieve full citizenship through social movements. The social movement of the fishermen's resistance group is a practice of actualizing civic politics to fight for equality of citizenship rights. Conflicts between citizens and the state occur because state policies tend to marginalize citizens socially, politically and economically. The methodology in this research uses an explanatory qualitative approach, as a post-positivism approach that explains specifically and in-depth the problem of civic politics through the fishermen's resistance movement against the Gulf reclamation. This case study shows that a policy can be created without the role of participation and equality. Data collection techniques in this research are interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs). The findings of this research reveal that civic politics is weakened because the social, political and cultural rights of citizens are not fulfilled. The weakening of civic politics shows that in addition to the efforts of the state to weaken it, the citizens themselves are also still weak. It is necessary to strengthen the civic politics of the citizens themselves through civic transformation.
