Abstract

This research aim to determine the extent of mining activities have an impact on the change to society. A series of research conducted show that mining activities undertaken by the community has prompted a change in the structure, culture, and economy. The three elements that change is a direct impact of the iron sand mining. Wherein the iron sand mining activities cause the change in interaction pattern, community perspective, and also rise the new social groups. Cultural change can be observed from the changes of the community livelihood system that also affect to the community relation pattern. Whereas economic changes are indicated by the sift of livelihood, but it doesn’t significantly change the economic condition. The application of technology has successfully encourage a change of perspective, attitude, mindset, increase incomes in the economy, and encourage environmentally friedly mining practices.

Abstract

Water, energy and food are the most crucial sectors to be developed due to its importance for human life. The availability, accessibility, and quality of those three commodities have to be ensured for the whole people in a region. This research was conducted to study the existence of water, energy and food related sector compare with other sectors in West Java Province by using one of economic base approaches so called Location Quotient (LQ) method. By analysing gross regional domestic products (GRDP) year 2011-2015 at constant 2010 market prices, basic and non-basic sectors have been determined. The results show how the static and dynamic location quotient (SLQ & DLQ) analysis were effective to figure out general situation and characteristic of basic and non-basic sector in this region. This composite approach is expected to assist local government and stakeholders in undertaking preliminary evaluation in particularly water, energy and food sectors evaluation to improve their security. Furthermore, water, energy, and food related sectors mostly in quadrant III and IV, indicating that serious actions have to be taken particularly by local government to improve production of those basic commodities. Integrated measures are expected to maintain their availability in the forthcoming years.

Abstract

Abstract

The number of poverty in West Java Province reaching 4.23 million / 9.18%, is a matter of special concern for the government of West Java Province to perform the actions and activities of poverty reduction. Meanwhile, West Java with 26 districts / cities has a huge plantation potential, there are 493,118 hectares of plantations in West Java with 33 plantation Commodities therein. This led to a desire to collaborate on poverty data and potential plantation data in order to reduce the poverty rate. Geographic information system (GIS) which contains data and distribution of poor communities and plantations developed to map the areas that have poor communities and the potential of plantations in the area. This is intended to facilitate the provision of assistance from the Plantation Office for poor communities around the plantation. The system development method used is UCD (User Centered Design) so that it can focus on the needs of data and information needed. The use of maps with the google maps API provides ease in presenting regional spatial data to show poverty data as well as plantation potential. The existence of mapping system of distribution of poor people and plantation potency hence information of location of poor society and potency of plantation in West Java can be raised in one information intact to facilitate in informing of poor society that domicile around plantation.

Abstract

Abstract

A GIS-based study using MapInfo software has been performed to examine the short- and medium-term effect of coastal erosion in Karawang, West Java. Assessment of short-term period shows different trends in the consecutive of nine-year data. The balanced trend was found in the first period when abrasion and accretion have the same rate of 12 ha/yr. In second period accretion has dominated by causing emerging land around 27 ha/yr, but erosion only displaced 2 ha/yr of coastal area. In the third period more abrasion process has occurred that made about 15 ha/yr shoreland disappear, but accretion took only 8 ha/yr. Medium-term study using 27-year data confirms more accurate estimation of abrasion and accretion rates. The data suggests that abrasion had affected on area loss more than 15 ha/yr, while accretion gave additional land about double than that. A brief schematic design has been provided in the study as alternative option to minimize the future impacts of coastal erosion by incorporating natural and artificial measures.
