Abstract

The existence of closed communication patterns between individuals in groups describes the phenomena of echo chamber, which is a form of communication in which a person only hears to the same opinion as he thinks. If there is polarization of opinion among groups in society, this phenomena will become a problem. As a result, macro social workers must see this occurrence as a potential threat in their work. The purpose of this research is to define the echo chamber phenomena and its implications for community empowerment. The issues of community empowerment practices carried out by social workers in Cigugur Girang village are described in this study using a qualitative approach and a case study method. The findings conclude that the echo chamber effect can arise among persons who are in conflict. The conflict causes societal polarization, which has an impact on macro social worker practice. It's tough for social professionals to find a place amid polarized groups. As a result, the empowerment goal will be hampered.

Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is sudden damage to the brain caused by a jolt or blow to the head. The common causes of TBI are due to falls, sports injuries, and car or motorcycle crashes. TBI can be classified into several types, ranges from a mild concussion to severe permanent brain damage. Nevertheless, the impacts of TBI are quite devastating not only to the patient but also on the family. It may last for several years, hence the affected patient definitely requires ongoing care which is normally provided by informal caregivers, such as spouses, parents, or other family members. In addition, TBI can cause drastic changes to the life of the family members. The caregiver’s stresses including psychological problems, family burdens, changes in behavior and changes in social roles will be discussed critically in this article. Based on the literature, many caregivers lack good coping strategies in dealing with their stress. More well-designed interventions is an absolute necessity among TBI family caregivers to lessen the stress and improve their social well-being and functioning.

Abstract

Reporting the preliminary findings and the feasibility of a pilot group psychotherapy intervention study of one hour session for four sessions, also known as 'PERKASA Intervention' towards parents of children with leukaemia, conducted at one of the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Malaysia. In this Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) design, a total of 19 parents agreed to participate and 11 participants were placed in the Treatment Group (TG), meanwhile eight parents were placed in the Control Group (CG). This study looked at the effects comparison between pre- and post-interventions, as well as reviewed the feasibility of the implementation of PERKASA Interventions. Feasibility refers to the evaluation of TG participants' feedback. PERKASA Intervention showed to positively impact stress, depression, anxiety, and coping strategies among TG at the pre and post stages. PERKASA Intervention has also been shown that it can be consistently used for targeted groups. The main challenge seen was the recruitment of participants during Covid-19 pandemic occurring all over the world. The data from this pilot study can be used as a reference for larger-scale studies in the future. This intervention was fully conducted by professionals from Medical Social Worker as therapists and the first to be implemented in Malaysia.
