Abstract

Language is a powerful tool that can be used to shift or produce ideologies, and language is a tool utilised in product marketing. Using Fairclough’s three-dimensional critical discourse analysis model, five Indonesian powdered milk television commercials are analysed to explore the utilised linguistic devices and marketing strategies. The social impact and implications of the advertisements are also studied. As a result, it can be concluded that advertisements are used by companies or brands to persuade people into purchasing and consuming their products, and advertisements have the power to influence consumers by utilizing linguistic devices and strategies. Advertisements also often evoke fear or feelings of inadequacy in potential consumers to persuade them into complying with the claims made in the advertisements.

Abstract

Interpersonal meaning is concerned with the way language users build up or maintain appropriate relationships with others in society. In Halliday (2014)’s view, it is through the interpersonal metafunction that users of language establish, and take a position on people, things, and situations in social relationships. Interpersonal expectations, which are implicit in the IELTS assessment criteria (Nakamura, 2009), are widely recognized as contributing to the quality of IELTS essays. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics developed by Halliday as an analytical tool, the present study explores how interpersonal meaning has been deployed by IELTS candidates in IELTS high-scoring exposition and discussion essays. 90 sample essays from published books and official IELTS websites are selected as data for text analysis. The descriptive method is used to give a detailed description of interpersonal meanings under the two major systems: mood and modality in the light of Functional Grammar with a view to illuminating the salient linguistic features of IELTS academic essays written by highly successful test-takers, thereby providing IELTS test-takers with a better understanding of how to tactically manipulate the aspects of modality and mood choice, thus attaining success in writing IELTS academic essays.

Abstract

Gestures alongside language constitute one of the essential semiotic resources in an English classroom interaction. It is based on the credence that the meaning-making in any English classroom discourse is realised not only through a language as a semiotic resource, but gestures constitute the other determinant semiotic resources that might facilitate the effective instructional practices and assist students’ English learning. However, scant scrutiny of the way a native English teacher uses gestures in an EFL classroom setting was still found. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate one of the British sitcoms, Mind Your Language. This film is worth investigating for it tells about a native English teacher teaching pupils with multicultural backgrounds. A systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA) focusing on the ideational metafunction was employed to analyse the artifact, the British sitcom. The findings reveal that various types of gestures were employed by the teacher. Also, the gestures deployed had significant roles and functions, i.e. not only help visualise the lesson learned but also indicate the teacher’s state or condition as well as state during the lesson delivery. Lastly, it suggests that English teachers should take into account the co-contextualising relation between semiotic resources for it might lead students to achieve the expected outcome of the curriculum.

Abstract

This study aimed at addressing advertisement, which is one of the topics we deal with on a daily basis. Advertising today has affected many aspects of human life. The importance of the discourse of advertising and its prominent role in daily life has caused this phenomenon to be considered by researchers. This paper, with reference to the Systemic Functional Multimodal approach, examines the nature of connections that can occur between texts and images in English and Persian advertisements, whether to advertise products or to promote ideas in the form of posters. The main objective of this study is to compare image-text relations in Persian and English advertisements in terms of logico-semantic relations, namely: Elaboration, extension, Enhancement, and projection. The analysis of a sample of thirty English and thirty Persian advertisements manifests the employment of all four logico-semantic relations in the composition of English advertisements. Elaboration, ranking first in English advertisements, has been used in more than fifty percent of cases; other fifty percent illustrates extension, Enhancement, and projection. Projection is the least frequently used logico-semantic relation in English advertisements. However, in Persian advertisements, image-text connection was limited to Elaboration which is identified in all Persian advertisements of the present study. The analysis revealed diversity and more creativity in image-text combinations in English advertisements in comparison to Persian ones. A better understanding of the inter-semiotic relationships between visual and verbal modes helps designers of advertisements and other multimodal texts to make the most of the potential in this field and thus have innovative designs.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the interpersonal metafunction especially the mood system in the synopses of stories in the Webtoon App. It is aimed to figure out the types of mood realized in the synopses which amount to fifteen synopses, and also their function in relation to the interpersonal meaning of the author and to the advertising means to promote the story in the Webtoon App. This research was conducted by a descriptive qualitative method. This study uses the interpersonal metafunction theory proposed by Halliday (2004). The source of data of this research is fifteen stories from three different genres – romance, thriller, and comedy in the Webtoon App. The data are sentences in the synopses of the Webtoon App’s stories that indicate the interpersonal metafunction mood element. Generally, the result of the research is the three mood types – declarative, interrogative, and imperative are found in the chosen synopses, the most dominant type of mood is the declarative mood type, while the least dominant is the declarative mood. The findings indicate that the lexico-grammar does not always reflect the interpersonal meaning fitly. It is evidenced by the finding of this research that shows the declarative is used for informing, the interrogative is used for questioning and also for informing, and the imperative is used for commands.

Abstract

For about six decades ago, there has been a shift of focus from the formal study of language (alone) to relating contexts to the study and description of language. The reason behind this is that language cannot exist on its own and be meaningful unless we relate its study to social practices. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA henceforth) with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model (3-D Model) of CDA is used for the analysis of the selected news on politics. Fairclough’s three-dimensional approach to CDA sees a text as a communication medium comprising three interrelated activities viz description, interpretation and explanation. Description is the identification of the formal features of a text. Interpretation identifies the relationship between the formal features of the text and interaction by considering the experiential, relational and expressive functions of the identified linguistic features in the text. Explanation which is the last stage is concerned with the relationship between interaction and the social practices, that is, it focuses on how the societal beliefs shape the use of language in communication. The findings of this study show that news broadcasters inform people of pressing issues, attract their attention in the course of communication, and state facts and reinforce the stated information in the mind of the listeners or readers through the use of a well organised and manipulated form of language. Based on the above premise, it could be said that social conditions and episodes that people encounter at a particular time influence their use of language and it varies from one profession to another.

Abstract

Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics that studies the relationship between language and its social context. This study aims to analyze the use of pragmatic language in the daily communication of the Dulolong community in Alor Regency. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The research data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The results showed that there are various distinctive pragmatic features in the use of the Dulolong language, including It was found that in formal situations, speakers tend to use more polite language, while in everyday casual interactions, more relaxed and familiar language is used more often, The use of more relaxed and familiar language. This can be seen from the use of more informal vocabulary and grammar, as well as the use of more familiar greetings and titles. This research contributes to the understanding of pragmatic language use in local contexts. The results of this study can be used to improve understanding of the importance of regional language pragmatics in the preservation and development of local languages and cultures.

Abstract

Every living thing communicates with humans through sounds, facial expressions, and body gestures. Man's relationship with the environment creates an ecological ideology that includes views, values, and actions toward nature. The focus of this research is the unique interaction betw een humans and dugongs in Alor Regency, where dugong intelligence creates a unique representation of man's relationship with nature. To collect research data, research methods are used by way of interviews referred to as "qualitative research methods". Qualitative methods are research approaches that aim to understand social phenomena or human behavior through direct interaction with research subjects, such as interviews, observations, or document analysis. The purpose of this study is to understand how ecological ideology is reflected in the stories surrounding dugongs in Alor Regency and their impact on people's views on human and nature interactions. Through an in-depth understanding of everyday stories, research is expected to make a positive contribution to environmental conservation and ecological understanding in the region, potentially as a foundation for more effective policies.

Abstract

This article examines a social semiotic analysis of selected basic pupils’ English textbooks in Awka metropolis. Considering the fact that textbooks are necessary tools in the classroom for both teachers and students, it is pertinent to note that without the provision of required texts, teaching and learning of the English language in our schools will be handicapped. Texts in the textbooks for instruction in nearly all levels of education most often occur in combination with images or pictures, which, in essence, depict the multimodal nature of our basic pupils’ English language textbooks. In examining how these multiple modes interplay and serve as unified modes, this study relies on the notions of social semiotics (Halliday, 1978; Kress, 2012) and multimodality (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2006, 2020). Data for the study, consisting of sixteen figures, were obtained from six selected primary school English textbooks. Findings from the study show that textbook designers employ several meaning-making resources to present pupils with concrete and familiar concepts that they can easily relate to. The study contributes to research on language teaching and pedagogy in its approach to applying visuals to teaching English. The study also serves as a resource for teachers and pupils of English. The finding of this study also adds to studies on social semiotics in its incorporation of meaning-making resources in the teaching and learning of the English language by basic pupils. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find how the effects of vocabulary and grammar mastery towards student’s speaking skill to the nine-year junior high school students of Al - Islam Kartasura. The reached population of this research is the nine years. The sampling of population consists of 30 students. The research use survey method. The data collected are done by testing the ability of the student in grammar mastery vocabulary mastery and speaking skill. This research is used survey method. This research has three variables. They are grammar mastery (X1) and vocabulary mastery (X2) called as independent variable. Furthermore, speaking skill (Y) called as dependent variable. This research analyzes using multiple linear regressions. This research analyzes using SPSS version 27.00 for windows. The result shows there are any positive correlation. The students who have high vocabulary and grammar score their speaking score are high too. And it has positive correlation. The implication of this research useful for teacher, researcher and another English teacher to applicate this method to their students.
