Abstract

The flag inscribed with the phrase tauḥīd has been claimed by Jihadist-extremism groups to use the narrative hadith as a representation of the flag of the Prophet Muhammad (Liwā' and Rāyah). This phenomenon inspires researchers to carry out in-depth investigations on the history of the hadith, either through micro analysis (isnād) or macro analysis (matn). The purpose of this investigation is to reveal the status and motive for the existence of the phrase tauḥīd on the Prophet's flag. This research uses a qualitative interpretive study to explore the historical-critical paradigm through isnād-cum-matn approach by Harald Motzki. The findings show that the phrase tauḥīd, which is claimed to be part of the symbol of the Prophet's flag, is only the form of insertion (idrāj) by Ḥayyan bin Ubaidillah as “the real common link”. The deviation was carried out as propaganda against the political contestation between the Abbasiyya dynasty and the Umayya dynasty in Egypt. This study’s results supply a new perspective that the religious symbols used as religious identity are not all based on valid sources. Keywords: Prophet’s Flag, Tauḥīd Phrase, Hadith, Isnād-cum-Matn, Political Religion Symbolic

Abstract

This research discusses the understanding of the sunnah according to Ismailism. The understanding of the Sunnah has been dominated by the definition of sunnah according to Sunni, the characteristic of Sunni in understanding the concept of sunnah by using Sunnah as a source of Islamic law and also giving more attention to the ahl bayt  and also to the Sahaba. This notion is different from Shi’ah’s thought that only believes in ahl bayt, regardless of Sahaba. The difference between the two groups in seeing the degree of Sahaba makes the deferent of sunnah among them. By researching some of the of Ismailism’s thought in the definition of sunnah, this study is expected to contribute ideas related to Ismailism's method in understanding the sunnah, and in judging the authenticity of sunnah, and to analyze the consistency of application to the sunnah according to Ismailism. This research shows that Ismailism followed esoteric approach to understand the concept of sunnah. This approach causes the sunnah position is not prioritized in the scientific structure of Ismailism. The reason for the small concern in Ismailism’s thought towards the Sunnah is basically started from their understanding about the verses of the Holy Qur'an, and their esoteric interpretation corresponds to the pillars of Ismailism. Keywords: Ismailism, Sunnah, Sunni, Shi’a, Critical Reading

Abstract

The textual understanding of the Quran and Hadith during the pandemic era has manifested an obstacle for the implementation of the advised health protocols against COVID-19. The textualists try to confront the Quran and Hadith with the social reality of health. They insisted that one should only fear of Almighty God Almighty, not the corona virus, and the congregation of the prayers should be performed at mosques. Against this backdrop, MUI released a guide to worship during the holy month of Ramadan 2020 in the midst of COVID-19. This article, subscribing to qualitative research method investigates the MUI guidance through socio-genetic motive theory. Following the thematic framework, this research found that MUI's socio-genetic motive in appropriating COVID-19 as a mercy (rahmat) is to reduce the potential for conflict, in shifting the meaning of worship to not only in the mosque is to form household harmony, and in optimizing fasting, and zakat is to foster social awareness. While the MUI's motive for basing on Hadith in ordering the use of masks is self-protection and other fellow humans, the motive for maintaining personal hygiene is social health awareness, and the motive to stay at home is not to endanger others. The novelty of this research is to answer the idealism of textualists by combining the study of religious texts with social theory. Keywords: socio-genetic motive; MUI; Quran and Hadith

Abstract

In patriarchal culture, some hadith texts are as main sources of legitimacy for dehumanization of women. The hadith texts are documented in the popular hadith books. This, encourages the strong notion that Islam supports discrimination against women. Whereas, the Prophet Muhammad SAW. has made great efforts in humanizing women. The role of the Prophet in humanizing women is manifested in the discourse of hadith. thus, a new understanding is needed in interpreting misogynistic hadiths. In this context, this study aims to reread the misogynistic hadiths in al-Kutub al-Tis'ah (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Sunan at-Turmudzi, Sunan Ibn Majah, Sunan ad-Darimi, Musnad Muwaththa' Iman Malik, Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal) that related to women as personal, worship, marriage, and public spaces. To achieve this purpose, this study uses takhrij method by confirming from various hadith. As part of the data analysis, this study used gender analysis to map the form of discrimination and reinterpretation of the hadiths. The study conclude that there are 60 misogynistic hadith texts in five forms (22 subordinations, 18 violence, 15 stereotypes, 3 marginalizations, and 2 double burdens), caused by textual, partial and unhistorical interpretations. The rereading of the hadith texts is done holistically by linking and presenting verses of the Qur'an, hadiths and other texts integratively, comprehensively, taking into account historical aspects, and basic ideas of hadith. Keywords: Hadith Text, Misogynist, al-Kutub al-Tis`ah, Humanizing Women

Abstract

The variety of Qiraāt is closely related to the interpretation of the Quran. Often, variety of Qiraāt result in different understanding and law. Al-Tahāwī gives special attention on the variety of Qiraāt and its use in the istinbāṭ of fiqh rulings in his interpretation entitled Ahkām al-Qur'ān al-Karīm. This research aims at investigating al-Tahāwī’s method towards the variety of Qiraāt and its implication in the istinbāṭ of fiqh rulings. This research paper employs analytic descriptive method by exploring and analyzing the variety of Qiraāt included in the interpretation entitled Ah}kām al-Qur’ān al-Karīm. The results showed that al-T{ah{āwī's interaction methods towards the variety of Qiraāt are: (1) providing all possible Qiraāt; (2) verifying the validity of Qiraāt; (3) explaining Qiraāt Syāżah. This method is very influential in the istinbāṭ of fiqh rulings because al-T{ah{āwī’s orientation on presenting variety of Qiraāt is related to the istinbāṭ of fiqh rulings itself. al-T{ah{āwī tried to compromise the variety of Qiraāt and confirmed his choices, far from being mażhab fanatics as those found in al-Jaṣāṣ, Ilkiyā al-Harāsi and Ibn al-‘Arabi.Keywords: Ahkām al-Qur’ān al-Karīm, al-Tahāwī, the variety of Qur’an recitations, Fiqh rulings.

Abstract

This paper is a netnographic study of hadith memes prohibition women from traveling without mahram on Indonesian social media. there are three main questions that are in focus: 1) how does classical literature record hadiths related to this theme? 2) how does this hadith exist in memes on Indonesian social media? 3) how did this phenomenon give birth to the amplification of Islamic doctrine? By using content analysis, this study shows: 1) the hadith in this theme is a hadith that is widely known among the Companions of the Prophet and the gatherers of the hadith, and is considered mutually reinforcing, 2) on social media, the hadith exists in various memes; besides the media factor, also the factors of its users which still carry theological aspects, 3) the massive spread of memes in this theme triggers the creation of the Islamic doctrine, and has an effect on the neglect of other more essential aspects of Islamic doctrine. This study also found that the existence of the meme hadith is a re-actualization of classical discourse that is intended as resistance to a variety of religious social phenomena that are deemed deviant, especially in relation to women's freedom in the public sphere. To this point, it must be acknowledged that the memes that are spread are methodologically problematic or irrelevant in a contemporary context. Beyond these findings, the existence of memes with different interpretations but in limited quantities and intended as a counter to memes that have been widespread will further enrich the discourse of hadith studies. Keywords: hadith, memes, netnographic study, mahram

Abstract

This article describes the state of progressive Qur'anic interpretation studies over the past five years at three State Islamic Higher Education, UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang and UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. The article is based on the argument that the study of the progressive interpretation of the Qur'an which is reflected in the issues of social justice, women and gender equality, pluralism, and deradicalization has strong relevance to contemporary issues that are widely discussed by scholars. In addition, it is also the responsibility of Islamic higher education to provide Qur'anic solutions to the contemporary problems. The study focused on three questions, namely: the frequency of progressive interpretation studies, the concentration of progressive interpretation issues, and the development and orientation of progressive interpretation studies. The method used in this study is a literature review of the scientific publications of lecturers in the study of the Koran and the final papers of students majoring in Al-Qur'an and Tafsir. The results showed that the study frequency of progressive Qur'anic interpretation in the three universities in the period 2014 – 2019 was still low, recorded at 18.52%. However, the frequency  of progressive Qur'anic studies in the 2014-2019 period showed an increase of 1.3%. The issues discussed have covered the four issues mentioned above, although some of them have not received enough attention. The orientation of the study is still concentrated on the interpretation of the meaning of the Koran, it has not yet led to a methodological study in building a paradigm and approach to contemporary interpretation. Keywords: progressive exegesis; frequency; issues; development and orientation of the study

Abstract

In the historical record of Islam, even in the early era of the formation of Islam, the practice of treating the Koran or certain units of the Koran into something meaningful in the practical life of the people has basically occurred. The history of Islam also records the existence of the phenomenon of treating physical ailments by reciting the holy verses of the Koran, for example the al-Fatihah which was read by a companion of the prophet which can remove the effects of poisonous stings. This phenomenon continues and is widely practiced by Muslims. However, not a few consider it an act of shirk because it treats the verses of the Koran as inappropriate for their function and is considered influenced by other cultures that are contrary to Islamic rules. that notion is based on the meaning of the word Asy-Syifa' in the Qur'an which tends to specialize in the meaning of spiritual healing. This article attempts to review the concept of asy-Syifa” in the Qur’an, especially in relation to the use of Qur'anic verses as a method of treating physical ailments. This research is a library research using the theory of Kamaruddin Hidayat concerning the steps of interpretation, namely using the verses of the Koran as a source of interpretation, adding information from the hadith of the prophet and paying attention to the community environment when the Qur'an was revealed and the use of a word used in that community. The results of this research reveal that the word asy-Syifa” in the Koran can also mean a cure or medicine for all kinds of diseases, both mental and physical ailments. Keywords: Al-Qur’an, asy-Syifa’, treatment of physical ailments

Abstract

Liberal Islamic movements in Indonesia and Malaysia are still active in voicing their thoughts although they have been strongly rejected by some local religious authorities. Even though it is no longer as massive as it used to be, its influence in the development of interpretations of the Qur'an is still very pronounced today. This study examines the influence of Liberal Islamic thought on the development of Quranic exegesis in Indonesia and Malaysia and focuses on Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL) and Sisters in Islam (SIS), which are the most influential Liberal Islamic movements in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia. The data were collected from literature references with textual analysis as the main method. The results of this study indicate that the influence of JIL in the development of Quranic exegesis in Indonesia: first, the influence on the authority of interpretation by urging the Al-Quran. Second, the influence on the methodology of interpretation. Although JIL was not the initiator, JIL has a significant influence in bringing the flow of contextual methodology, maqāṣid approaches, hermeneutics, and other contemporary methods to Indonesia. Third, the influence on the popularization of new interpretive issues, such as human rights and gender. Meanwhile, SIS does not have a significant influence on the interpretation of the Quran in Malaysia like JIL, because: first, the hermeneutic approach used by SIS in the interpretation of the Quran is Amina Wadud's hermeneutics, so she is more famous than SIS itself. Second, the liberal Islamic movement in Malaysia is strongly opposed by the Malaysian kingdom. Keywords: JIL, SIS, Quranic exegesis, Contextual, Hermeneutic
