Abstract

Currently, one business model that is particularly prevalent in Indonesia and has an impact on state revenue is start-up. There is one technology start-up in Indonesia that also influences economic development in Indonesia, namely company X. Behind the good performance of technology start-ups, there are roles of workers, culture, and the environment. Start-up X has a culture, namely a flexible work arrangement in which employees can have the freedom to choose when and where to work. This flexibility also has a lot of impact on the way of work and also the daily life of the workers. Flexible work arrangement (FWA) works as resources in a company. The high freedom affects workers’ engagement. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of flexible work arrangements on the work engagement of employees at Start-up Company X. This research was conducted on 102 workers selected with a convenience sampling technique. This study uses a non-experimental research design with a correlational study method. Data collection was carried out using the Flexible Work Arrangement measuring tool adapted from Umi Farida (2020) and the Indonesian Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES)-17 questionnaire from Schaufeli (2004). The results of this study indicate that there is a significant effect (p<0.001; R2=0.245) of the flexible work arrangement on the work engagement of employees at start-up company X. It means if there is a change in flexible work arrangement, it will impact the result of the work engagement. Our research adds new insights about the impact of FWA and WE variables on startup companies. Furthermore, when FWA is supported by adequate job resources and balanced with job demands, it can improve employee’s WE in startup companies. This study can provide information on future research on FWA and WE variables in start-up companies and with FWA supported by job resources that are balanced with job demand, will increase the WE of start-up company workers.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are a crucial aspect of education aimed at equipping students with strong analytical abilities, deep understanding, and effective problem-solving skills. The primary objective of this study is to assess the impact of implementing the talking-stick-playing strategy during group guidance sessions on the enhancement of critical thinking skills among students majoring in Guidance and Counseling at Bengkulu University. The research methodology employed in this investigation is experimental, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest design. Participant selection involved purposive sampling, with a sample size of eight students from 29 students. Data collection used the critical thinking ability scale adapted from Purnomo (2020), comprising 5 dimensions and 15 statement items. Analytical techniques were using descriptive analysis and Wilcoxon test analysis. Findings from the descriptive analysis reveal that students' critical thinking abilities were categorized as sufficient before the intervention, but improved to a good level after the treatment. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon test results yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, indicating that the implementation of the talking-stick strategy during group guidance sessions significantly influences the development of students' critical thinking skills. This indicates that the structured and participatory communication method introduced through the Talking-Stick helps students develop their critical thinking skills. Therefore, this approach should be considered by educators and counsellors as a valuable resource in enriching students' learning experiences in higher education.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the high level of smartphone addiction among students. This is due to the coping activities carried out as a form of release from academic stress experienced by students. One of these coping activities is cyberloafing behavior. This study aims to determine the impact of academic stress and cyberloafing on smartphone addiction. This study is quantitative research with multiple regression analysis. The population in this study were 319 students of class XI SMA N 4 Padang, and the sample size was 177 people using the Proportional Random Sampling technique. The data was collected using an academic stress instrument. The results of the validity and reliability test of the academic stress instrument adapted from the SSA scale (Academic Stress Scale) were declared valid and reliable. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and multiple regression. The results of this study indicate that academic stress and cyberloafing together have a significant impact on smartphone addiction. This means that the higher the level of academic stress experienced by students and the higher the cyberloafing carried out, the higher the level of smartphone addiction by students. This finding can be a reference for counselling teachers to provide services in reducing academic stress and reducing the level of cyberloafing and smartphone addiction in students.

Abstract

In the modern era of academic pressure, individuals often face psychological challenges that affect their ability to persevere and succeed. Cognitive restructuring counselling has been shown to be effective in changing an individual's mindset, but there have not been many studies examining the influence of the integration of spiritual values such as Wahdatul Ulum in this context. This study aims to explore the effect of integrating Wahdatul Ulum values in cognitive restructuring counseling to increase mental resilience and student perseverance. This study uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach to develop and test a cognitive restructuring counseling model that integrates the values of Wahdatul Ulum. The population is students of FITK UIN SU Medan class of 2020 totaling 195 students. The research sample was 32 BKPI students who were selected purposively. Instrument development by identifying and analyzing literature, expert validation, limited trials, and developing cognitive restructuring counselling models covering aspects of Wahdatul Ulum values. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test that utilizes SPSS 25 to detect any significant changes. The results showed that the perseverance of the treatment group increased significantly, while the perseverance of the control group decreased. These findings support the idea that the integration of spiritual values in counselling can provide an effective holistic approach to improving individual resilience. This research provides insight into how cognitive restructuring counselling with the Wahdatul Ulum approach can help students overcome psychological barriers and improve their ability to face challenges in daily life. The practical implication is that cognitive restructuring counselling with spiritual values can be an effective alternative to guidance and counselling services to improve students' perseverance and mental resilience.
