Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia (JEI) publishes original research papers and short communications that covers the basic and applied aspect of insects and mites or other arthropods in agriculture, forestry, human and animal health, and natural resources and environmental management. The journal is published by Perhimpunan Entomologi Indonesia (Entomological Society of Indonesia). JEI was first published at the beginning of 2004 with twice per year in frequency on March and September. Since 2015, Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia has been published three times per year on March, July, and November.

Abstract

Cucumber is a monoceous plant and require pollinators for pollination process. Diversity and foraging activity of pollinators affect the effectiveness of pollination, which can improve the yields. The aim of this research were to study the diversity, foraging behavior, and effectiveness of insect pollinators on cucumber plants. Scan sampling was used as on of the methodology for observing pollinator diversity, while foraging behavior was observed using focal sampling. Pollination effectiveness were measured based on the number of fruit set of opened and caged plants. Fifteen species were found as pollinator of cucumber, i.e., Xylocopa confusa Pérez, Xylocopa latipes (Drury), Xylocopa caerulea Fabricius, Ceratina bryanti Cockerell, Amegilla burnensis Lieftinck, Nomia quadridentata Bingham, Nomia sp., Megachile unbripennis Smith, Megachile aff. disjuncta Fabricius, Megachile conjuncta Smith, Campsomeris javana Lepeletier, Syrphus sp., Parasyrphus sp., Eurema hecabe Linnaeus, and Vanessa cardui Linnaeus. The longest visit on cucumber flower pattern was by Syrphus sp. (50.71 seconds/flower), while the shortest visit was by X. confusa (4.78 seconds/flower). Pollination by insects increase 100% production as measured by healthy fruit per plant. Pollination also increase 77.61% of seeds number per fruit and 28.57% of seed weight.

Abstract

Bulbitermes is one of the endemic genera distributed in the Oriental Regions. Information on taxonomy and its nesting biology is very limited compared to other genera in the region.  Bulbitermes germanus  collected from Indonesia was rediscribed. It was found that color, head capsule contriction and, segmentation antenna are important characters for soldier caste, while antennal segmentation and mandibles conditions (worker caste) determined characters for reducing intra-specific variation within genus. Examination of a large number of colonies from various habitats in Indonesia showed that combination both soldier and worker characters were much efective for systematic work for the species. Colony of this species were relatively abundant in the tropical forests of Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and Papua respectively. Nesting strategies of the species was first time reported.

Abstract

Control of postharvest pest on cocoa beans during storage is generally conducted by fumigation with phosphine. Long-term exposure to phosphine and improper fumigation practices could stimulate the development of resistant strains against phosphine. The aims of this research were to know the resistance status of red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) against phosphine from cocoa bean storages in Makassar, South Sulawesi and to conduct the field efficacy test of phosphine against insects resistant strain to confirm their resistance status. The study was conducted by collecting T. castaneum from five different cocoa beans storages in Makassar. Resistance status was tested in the laboratory using the standard method recommended by FAO and by conducting field efficacy test on adult strains resistant to phosphine. The results showed the presence of insect resistance to phosphine. Adult, pupae, and larvae of T. castaneum were found to be resistant to phosphine with the resistance factors of 1.15–8.08, 1.58–13.63, 1.53–3.25, respectively. The results of field efficacy tests showed that dosage 2 tablets/m3 was effective in controlling resistant strain of adult, pupae, and larvae of T. castaneum.

Abstract

Thrips is the second largest genus on the order of Thysanoptera, most of them are polyphagous and some species are serious pests on vegetables. The damages caused by thrips can reach 30–50% yield loss. Thrips alliorum (Priesner), T. hawaiiensis (Morgan), and T. parvispinus (Karny) are widely reported as pests on crops, especially on horticulture. This study aimed to identify three trhips species: Thrips alliorum, T. hawaiiensis, and T. parvispinus based on the DNA sequences of mtCOI gene fragment. Thrips samples were collected from Bandung, Bogor, Cianjur, and Kuningan districts. Three steps, they were sample collection and DNA total extraction, amplification by using PCR and DNA sequence analysis. The PCR succesfully amplified DNA of mtCOI gene fragments of T. alliorum, T. hawaiiensis, and T. parvispinus at 678, 690, and 668 bp respectively. The mtCOI DNA sequences were dominated by A and T bases with the nucleotide variation value of  25.18%. Identification of the three thrips species: T. alliorum, T. hawaiiensis, and T. parvispinus based on molecular characters using mtCOI DNA sequences confirmed the identification result based on the morphological caharacters.

Abstract

Fungicide is one of the common pesticide applies in agriculture. Even though fungicide is specifically designed to prevent growth of fungi, some studies reported neurotoxic effects of fungicide to some tested animals. Therefore there are concerns about the possible determintal effects of fungicide to beneficial non target organisms, like pollinating insects. This study was conducted to determine the toxicity of commercial fungicide to pollinator, Trigona (Tetrgonula) laeviceps Smith, by determining the LD50 and hazard quotient (HQ). The fungicides tested were triazole (tridimefon and difenoconazole), propamorcab (propamocarb HCl), and dithiocarbamate (mancozeb and propineb). Forager bees were collected and anasthesized by exposing the bees to low temperature (-10 oC) for 1 min. About 1 µl of tiadimefon (6,25; 12,5; 25; 37,25; 50 µg/bee), difenoconazole (1,25; 2,5; 5; 6,25; 12,5; 25 µg/bee), propamocarb HCl (72.,25; 144,5; 216,6; 361,25; 433,5 µg/bee), mancozeb (1,6; 3,2; 4,8; 6,4; 8 µg/bee), and propineb (0.9; 1.8; 2.7; 6; 8.4; 16.8; 25.2 µg/bee) were applied using topical application on dorsal area of bees. Ten bees were used for each concentration and replicated 3 times. Mortality of bees was recorded for 48 hours. Results showed that LD50 and HQ for each tested fungicide were as follow: triadimefon LD50 13.43 ±1.78 µg/bee, HQ = 18.62; difenoconazole LD50 9.25 ± 1.21 µg/bee, HQ = 27.03; propamocarb HCl LD50 270.45 ± 19.48 µg/bee, HQ = 14.34; mancozeb LD50 3.75±0.47 µg/bee, HQ = 512; and propineb LD50 9.71 ±2.20 µg/bee, HQ = 144.18. Among all 5 tested fungicide, two fungicide, mancozeb and propineb, has intermediate level of toxicity to foragers of T. laeviceps and could produce determintal effect to colony.

Abstract

Lombok Island (West Nusa Tenggara) is one of the major papaya producer in Indonesia. In the last five years, papaya production in West Nusa Tenggara has decrease continuosly. Pest mites is one the constraint found in papaya production in Indonesia. At the present there is no data available related with mites on papaya in Lombok island. Thus, the aim of the research is to determine the identity of pest mites on papaya in Lombok Island. Mites collected from 50 different location of 5 districts in Lombok Island. From each location, 3 plant were sampled for observation, two leaves from each plants were collected. Identification of mites were conducted by using morphological  characters such as stigma, gnathosoma, and idiosoma. The results revealed twelve spesies of pest mites of papaya in Lombok island, they were Aculops pelekassi Keifer, Calacarus carinatus Keifer, Brevipalpus californicus Banks, B. obovatus Dannadieu, B. phoenicis Geijskes, Tenuipalpus pasificus Baker, Eutetranychus africanus Tucker, Panonychus citri McGregor, Tetranychus fijiensis  Hirst , T. kanzawai Kishida, T. piercei McGregor, and Tarsonemus bilobatus Suski.
