Abstract

The objective of conducting Mandarin language learning process for senior high schools is to produce students who are capable and master such knowledge. The Government has set four types of basic competencies which must be possessed by students in learning Mandarin: the ability to listen, to speak, to read, and to write. In order to be able to transfer such abilities and knowledge, not only the teachers’ capability is required but also a suitable curriculum is needed to help achieving the objective of learning Mandarin language. The Government has set the basic criteria for curriculum and teaching material that must be included in every teaching books.  In addition, the government has determined the types of basic competencies that must be accomplished in every teaching material given. Nevertheless, in practice, many schools do not adopt the guidelines that the government has set, resulting in disharmony between the government guidelines and the common practice. Such disharmony will certainly affect the competency of the teachers as well as the final outcome for the learning process, at the risk of not being able to accomplish the main objective. Article applied s the observation method and library research, as well as some personal  experience as a trainer in improving the quality of teachers for Mandarin language.

Abstract

Modality is always interesting to discuss. Understanding it is crucial for both language teachers and learners. This essay discusses the concept of modality, its types and uses. It has a goal to find the difference between deontic and epistemic modality that is indicated by their modal verbs. It also provides the readers a better understanding of modality, particularly of its types and uses. The result of the analysis shows that in general, deontic modality indicates obligation and permission, while epistemic modality expresses possibility and prediction. However, the difference between deontic and epistemic modality is not a clear cut, since one single modal verb can express both types, and one single proposition can be expressed by more than one modal verb.

Abstract

Hanzi is the written form of the Chinese language. It is one of ancient characters in the world and also is the most used letters now. Many university students think that hanzi is their main problem in learning Chinese language. In order to find the easiest way to master Chinese characters, the author conducted a study using   qualitative and quantitative methods by conducting surveys to universities, distributing questionnaires, doing a Chinese hanzi skill test, doing interviews with lecturers who teach hanzi course, and making an experiment according to the theory of hanzi expert in China. The results show that the difficulty of university students to master hanzi is divided to several parts, such as: the difficulty from the elements of hanzi, poor learning habits, the thought of students or lecturer who thought that hanzi is difficult, lack of motivation and lack of language environment. Abstract

Cement is a strategic commodity. Indonesia as a developing country continues, cement becomes something absolute. Particularly, in the next few years, infrastructure development continues announced. To it, we need to anticipate the occurrence of scarcity (shortage) of cement to meet the needs in the country in the next couple years. Fears of a shortage of cement in the country are quite groundless. Currently installed production capacity of the national cement industry around 47.5 million tons per year, spreads over nine locations in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the average utilization rate of production capacity cement plant reaches between 80% -85% or about 38-40 million per year. Meanwhile, the current level of cement consumption reached about 33 million tons (still a surplus of about 5-7 million tons). The problem is, if the shortage is met from imports, it could damage the domestic cement industry. Therefore, to meet the interests of industry and consumers, the best way is the expansion of the new plant. And to support the expansion of the factory in the country, clearly requires a major investment. Based on the assumptions above, Holcim as a newbie in the national cement market, which previously bought cement Cibinong also takes part in the national market. Now, Holcim is not half-hearted continuously expanding its new factory in Tuban to increase the strength of its two plants that are already running. A series of innovations in marketing activities are carried out, ie not just treating cement as a commodity but rather providing a range of service solutions to users via the outlet solution that provides aid earthquake resistant building design, material supply multi-brand, as well as a series of cooperation in the process of financing by establishing cooperation to the bank.

Abstract

In the photographic development, the existence of color as part of the supporting aspect in the art of photography, is definitely influencing the final work of a photographer - whether it is a theory of color as lighting, or color as part of a pigment or chemical compound as part of physique from an object. Choosing a photo object based on colors can also create a meaning or theme in a composition of picture. This is the same when photo shoot is done with lighting that contends specific character or qualities of colors. For example, the use of color gel on the lights can create a condition that will be different when pictures are taken with white lights. Colors in photography can also give an expression or show an emotion visually that the photographer is trying to convey. With that said, a photographer who understands color concept can fix or anticipate any unwanted condition using a filter, for example, when lighting is contaminated with colors which changes the effect from the original color of an object. Therefore, with a thorough knowledge about colors, one can maximize the work just by making use of the available color aspect as part of the art work.

Abstract

This article forwards questions about graphic design in Indonesia. Most people here, even graphic designers or graphic design academics do not know the answer to the question of what graphic design is. This condition brings out a new question of whether we really have a graphic design culture in Indonesia. If we trace back to the cause of it all, we will find a fact how a human interest discourse is still very rare in our country. Even when we find one, it tends to be a very subjective compilation of opinions instead of a strongly-based study. In further look, this is one of the reasons of why many graphic designers are stirred into ineffective work process causing unequal partnerships in their professional projects. For this, we have none to blame but ourselves and the system that we?ve created.
