Abstract

There are a growing number of accelerator programmes designed to start and support innovative startup businesses. Many accelerators are increasing the size of their intakes, with some programmes now launching over 200 new companies per year. On first inspection the large numbers and consistent approach taken to accelerating the participating companies appears to be in conflict with producing innovative and disruptive companies. This paper uses Y Combinator as a single case study to investigate whether increasing the number of companies within a batch has resulted in longer or shorter timeframes for companies to achieve an exit (through acquisition or initial public offering). The paper finds that the timeframe for achieving an exit for Y Combinator companies is reducing, even while batch size has sharply increased. There is no statistically significant correlation between the cohort size and the initial money raised during the programme.  Keyword : Accelerators, Startups, Innovation

Abstract

This study explores the mechanism by which mobility influences university entrepreneurship through an empirical analysis of Japanese scientists working for the University of Tokyo. It presents theory-driven typology of mobility and applies it to the knowledge-transfer context.  First, this paper subdivides previously-studied mobility into four types – job mobility (JM), sector mobility (SM), international mobility (IM), and the educational background mobility (EBM). Then, it empirically shows that both JM and IM have positive and significant correlation with university entrepreneurship, whereas neither SM nor EBM does. Based on the result, this study discusses that JM and IM accelerate the formation of skills necessary for the commercialization of university research; however, SM and EBM may have no impact on it.

Abstract

Adoption of new technologies is a process that involves technological learning and penetration of new products into the market. Within the process of new technologies adoption, government usually intervened by providing incentives, in order to support the technology adoption to be succeed. This paper examines the effectiveness of incentives for the sustainability of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology adoption. The study conducted through single case study on SWRO installation in Mandangin Island, East Java, Indonesia. Results of case study indentify the existence of government incentive in the form of direct subsidies to decrease the price of clean water. Although successful in reducing the price of water, but effectiveness of the subsidy on the sustainability of SWRO is still low, which is operates only 30% in a year. Further analysis shows that these subsidies actually be counter-productive to the sustainability of SWRO installation.

Abstract

Increase in consumption of conventional plastics lead to environmental problems. Therefore, some efforts are needed to overcome it, one of them by using bioplastics. However, in Indonesia, companies engaged in bioplastics sector are still rarely found. Without the readiness of the bioplastics industry in Indonesia, development of bioplastics which ends to solve environmental problems cannot be realized. Through Socio-Technical Systems (STS) approach with Multi Level Perspective framework, this Papper analyze the dynamics of the transition of bioplastics in Indonesia. The results show the presence of pressure from landscape to underdeveloped niche, regime actors would give respond by modifying path development from its innovation activities. In other words, bioplastics in Indonesia has not yet experiencing a transition to replace conventional plastics. Precisely, technology in regime level experiencing change by developing additive plastic. However, there are several things that hinder further development of the niche, which include the high price of bioplastics and implementation of regulations related with incentives and disincentives and there is no coordination and shared vision between actor in niche level.

Abstract

Institutional is one factor that must be considered in the process of technology transfer. The Local Innovation System (in this case SIDa-Belu) was trying to look at those problems in agriculture to empowering poor farmers in the area. This paper analyzed transformation intitution, which occurs during and after the proccess of SIDa-Belu Implementation. The methods used in this research is descriptive analysis with structure, conduct, performance (SCP) approach.Institutional change is a transformation proccess that is part of development. Therefore, the main objective of any institutional change is to internalize the potential for greater productivity which comes from improved resource utilization, and creating a new balance simultaneously. On SIDa-Belu implementation, institutional change encourage the change for farming groups. Before SIDa-Belu they did subsistent farming, and after implementation they make a new adjustment by external factors (permanent feedback proccess) into modern farming groups with market oriented.

Abstract

Increasing public awareness of the importance of milk consumption and the increasing population of Indonesia make milk as an economic commodity that has a strategic value. The purpose of this study are to analyse the technological capabilities dairy processing industry in Indonesia and to understand how the company builds its technological capabilities. This research was conducted through case studies on some of the milk processing companies in Java classified by the ownership of capital are cooperative, local company and foreign company. The results showed differences in technological capabilities. The highest technological capabilities shown by foreign companies and the large-scale local companies. Meanwhile, a technological capability of dairy cooperatives is still low. By categories, mechanisme of technological capability development also different. Technological capabilities in dairy cooperatives conducted through internal efforts that do not involve external parties. Meanwhile, thelarge-scale local companies and foreign companies developed their technology capabilities by involving external partiess such as R & D institutions and foreign parties.
