Abstract

Knowledge of Sulawesi’s flora including bananas is rather poor due to lack of botanical exploration in this area. Exploration to assess the diversity of bananas in Mount Watuwila and adjacent areas has been done. Two intraspecific taxa of wild banana species (Musa acuminata var. tomentosa and M. acuminata ssp. banksii) and twelve banana cultivars occur in these area. Musa acuminata Colla var. tomentosa is an endemic variety of wild banana species in Sulawesi. Variation on some characters found in M. acuminata var. tomentosa. Some of the banana cultivars are members of M. acuminata triploid AAA, M. balbisiana triploid BBB, and Musa x paradisiaca triploid AAB.

Abstract

Mount Rinjani, lies in the island of Lombok, is believed as the major source of plant diversity in the island today. This is caused primarily by the rapid land conversion on the less steep plains for agricultural industries. Although in sum of less than 50% of the estimated native plant species, the endemic inhabit the mountain area is of important in conservation since very limited information known to these species. At the same time, the habitat is threaten by tourism activities, mainly on the tracks lead to the caldera. There is an urgent need to esta-blish a working conservation strategy to ensure the sustainability of them. In this paper, the occurrence of endemic species based on herbarium records and literatures with the proposed conservation strategy is discussed

Abstract

The ginger flora of the Lesser Sunda islands is very poorly known. A preliminary survey of Lombok in 2011 documented five wild species (Etlingera rubroloba, E. calophrys, Amomum maxium, A. gracile, Alpinia sp. and Globba marantina). The species of Alpinia cannot immediately be identified and may be new. A key to the genera and species is included in this account as well as photographs.
