Abstract

The taxonomic position of Psidium cujavillus Burm.f. in relation to P. guajava L. has not been widely agreed upon, so that this research was conducted to clarify it based on morphological characteristics, germination, anatomy, and chromosomes. Observations on the living material of P. cujavillus and P. guajava showed that there were basic similarities in the structure and forms except in segment distance and size of leaves, fruit diameter and seed weight. Both taxa have the same germination processes, and their seedlings morphology are also not much different except in size. Anatomically there were also no significant differences between P. cujavillus and P. guajava. Chromosome size of P. cujavillus and P. guajava do not exceed 2 μm, both has the number of 2n=22. Overall observation showed that there was no significant difference to indicated P. cujavillus as distinct species from P. guajava. Based on this, it is suggested that P. cujavillus should be classified as a infraspecies variation in P. guajava.

Abstract

Daemonorops fissa complex study in West Malesia has been done, based on 21 morphological characters of 355 herbarium specimen. D. fissa complex in West Malesia has unique characters such as peduncle erect to ± 2 cm, fruit globose, leaves alternate, length of involucrum 1 cm and endosperm ruminate. D. fissa complex in West Malesia consist of eight known species, namely D. angustifolia (Griff.) Mart., D. calicarpa (Griff.) Mart., D. fissa Blume, D. grandis (Griff.) Mart., D. lewisiana (Griff.) Mart., D. melanochaetes Blume, D. monticola (Grift) Mart., and D. stenophylla Becc. Three species are proposed as new synonym, D. binnendijkii Becc. and D. trichroa Miq. are synonim to D. angustifolia, whereas D. palembanica Blume as a synonim to D. melanochaetes.

Abstract

The genus Calochlaena was separated from Culcita in 1988, and consisting of about five species. Based on cpDNA sequences of rbcL gene, the phylogenetic tree was made and C. javanica is nested within the genus and the rest of dicksonioid ferns. The description, distribution and spore morphology are presented.

Abstract

The leaf anatomy of Freycinetia (Pandanaceae) in the Malesian Region is reviewed. We made observations of epidermal tissue, hypodermic and leaf mesophyll for 18 Freycinetia spp. Much variation was seen in the epidermal tissue, e.g., in the existence of papillae, stomata arrangement, shape of epidermis cell and prismatic crystals. We found seven groups within the genus Freycinetia, based on these characters and compared these groups to Stone’s sections.

Abstract

An unidentified Begonia from Karimunjawa and Bangka, Indonesia has been identified as Begonia sinuata Meisn., a Mainland Asian taxon based on habit, leaf shape (cordate leaf base, entire leaf margin, leaf surface with star-like hairs on both side) and three unequal wings. The largest wings 10–16 mm wide.
