Graphene is a promising new material for the construction of graphene devices because of its surface modification can be tuned the band gap. In this paper, the electronic and transport characteristics of defected graphene device are investigated. Both the electronic and transport characteristics are simulated using density functional theory (DFT). The band structures and transmission spectra are analyzed. The conductance and thermal conductance characteristic for both graphene is compared. From the simulation, it is found that the conductance, thermal conductance, and the I-V curves depend on the transmission spectrum of the graphene sheet or graphene device itself. The comparison between the defected graphene itself shows that the single layer with two vacancies shows better performance.

To accomplish increasing real time requirements, user applications have to send different kinds of data with different speeds over the internet. To effectuate the aims of the computer networks, several protocols have been added to TCP/IP protocol suite. Transport layer has to implement emerging techniques to transfer huge amount of data like multimedia streaming. To transmit multimedia applications, one of the suitable congestion control mechanisms in transport layer is TCP Friendly Rate Control Protocol (TFRC). It controls congestion based on its equation. To get more smoothed throughput, intermediate nodes (like Routers. etc.) have to use suitable procedures in all real time situations. To eradicate the level of congestion in the network, we introduce enhanced Holt-Winters equations to RED queue management algorithm and applied to TFRC. The simulation results have shown that this strategy reduces packet loss and increases throughput.

Robotic telepresence is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solution that has a huge potential to address the problem of access to quality healthcare delivery in rural areas. However, the capital and operating costs of available systems are considered to be unffordable for rural dwellers in emerging economies. In addition, most of these communities are not even connected to the power grid. In this paper, the authors reduced the cost of engaging a robotic telepresence solution for rural medicare by using plastic mannequin and solar photovoltaic technology. An IP camera was fixed in each of the eye sockets of the plastic mannequin. These cameras are connected to a mini-computer embedded in the plastic mannequin. A Wi-Fi module establishes an Internet connection between remote physicians and rural heathcare facilities. The system is powered by a solar photovoltaic energy source to guarantee power availability. Another unique feature of this solution is that it gives the patient a better impression of the physical presence of a physician. Comparative cost analysis with robotic telepresence available in the market showed that our system is more affordable. This development will increase the adoption of robotic telepresense in rural telemedicine.

This paper presents the elbow flexion and extension rehabilitation exercise system using marker-less Kinect-based method. The proposed exercise system is developed for the upper limb rehabilitation application that utilizes a low cost depth sensor. In this study, the Kinect skeleton tracking method is used to detect and track the joints of upper limb and then measure the angle of the elbow joint. The users perform the exercise in front of the Kinect sensor and the computer monitor. At the same time, they can see the results that displayed on the screen in real-time. The measurement of elbow joint angles are recorded automatically and has been compared to the reference values for the analysis and validation. These reference values are obtained from the normal range of motion (ROM) of the elbow. The results show the average flexion angle of the elbow joint that achieved by the normal user is 139.1° for the right hand and 139.2° for the left hand. Meanwhile, the average extension angle is 1.72° for the right hand and 2.0° for the left. These measurements are almost similar to the standard range of motion (ROM) reference values. The skeleton tracking works well and able to follow the movement of the upper arm and forearm in real-time.

This paper presents a Smart Home and Ambient Assisted Living (SHAAL) system that has been developed and tested in a real experimental home environment. SHAAL system is designed on wireless sensor network (WSN) linked to the cloud network on the Internet. The development of SHAAL is divided into two phases: the design of SHAAL network and the development of SHAAL applications. SHAAL network is made up of the home network which is the WSN, and the cloud network. The network is designed using TelG mote that operates under Zigbee technology and includes various sensor modules for SHAAL system. The cloud network consists of the gateway, the server and user devices running on third generation (3G) network. Using priority scheduling algorithm for data transmission, it is shown that the performance delay of this system on the test-bed experiment is 34.2 percent less compared to the theoretical study. The implementation of the experimental testbed has proven that SHAAL has been successfully designed and deployed in the real world.

An improved Augmented Line Segment Based (ALSB) algorithm for the construction of Rectilinear Steiner Minimum Tree using augmented line segments is proposed. The proposed algorithm works by incrementally increasing the length of line segments drawn from all the points in four directions. The edges are incrementally added to the tree when two line segments intersect. The reduction in cost is obtained by postponing the addition of the edge into the tree when both the edges (upper and lower L-shaped layouts) are of same length or there is no overlap. The improvement is focused on reduction of the cost of the tree and the number of times the line segments are augmented. Instead of increasing the length of line segments by 1, the line segments length are doubled each time until they cross the intersection point between them. The proposed algorithm reduces the wire length and produces good reduction in the number of times the line segments are incremented. Rectilinear Steiner Minimum Tree has the main application in the global routing phase of VLSI design. The proposed improved ALSB algorithm efficiently constructs RSMT for the set of circuits in IBM benchmark.

The accurate land use land cover (LULC) classifications from satellite imagery are prominent for land use planning, climatic change detection and eco-environment monitoring. This paper investigates the accuracy and reliability of Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier for classifying multi-spectral image of Hyderabad and its surroundings area and also compare its performance with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifier. In this paper, a hybrid technique which we refer to as Fuzzy Incorporated Hierarchical clustering has been proposed for clustering the multispectral satellite images into LULC sectors. The experimental results show that overall accuracies of LULC classification of the Hyderabad and its surroundings area are approximately 93.159% for SVM and 89.925% for ANN. The corresponding kappa coefficient values are 0.893 and 0.843. The classified results show that the SVM yields a very promising performance than the ANN in LULC classification of high resolution Landsat-8 satellite images.

This paper proposes an improved optimisation of sequencing batch reactors (SBR) for aerobic granular sludge (AGS) at high temperature-low humidity for domestic wastewater treatment using response surface methodology (RSM). The main advantages of RSM are less number of experiment required and suitable for complex process. The sludge from a conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plant and three sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were fed with synthetic wastewater. The experiment were carried out at different high temperatures (30, 40 and 50°C) and the formation of AGS for simultaneous organics and nutrients removal were examined in 60 days. RSM is used to model and to optimize the biological parameters for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus removal in SBR system. The simulation results showed that at temperature of 45.33°C give the optimum condition for the total removal of COD and phosphorus, which correspond to performance index R2 of 0.955 and 0.91, respectively.

This paper discusses the prospect of integrating a novel type of low concentration photovoltaic (LCPV) design known as the rotationally asymmetrical compound parabolic concentrator (RACPC) in a building in the United Kingdom. This is done by proposing a number of building integration designs to create a zero carbon building. A cost reduction analysis of installing the LCPV systems in the country is also presented. It was found that an RACPC design could reduce the LCPV module’s manufacturing cost by 31.75% and the LCPV module’s cost per unit power output by 33.87% when compared with the conventional PV module.
