Abstract

Learning how to speak in order to communicate with others is part of growing up. Like a normal person, deaf and mutes also need to learn how to connect to the world they live in. For this purpose, an Electronic Glove or E-Glovewas developed as a teaching aid for the hearing impaired particularly children. E-Glove makes use ofthe American Sign Language (ASL) asthe basis for recognizing hand gestures. It was designed using flex sensors and an accelerometer to detect the degree of bend made by the fingers as well asa movement of the hand. E-Glove transmits the data received from the sensors wirelessly to a computer and then displays the letter or basic word that correspondsto a gesture made by the individual wearing it. E-Glove provides a simple, accurate, reliable, cheap, speedy gesture recognition and user-friendlyteaching aid for the instructors that are teaching sign language to the deaf and mute community.

Abstract

In this era of internet development, security of information sharing is the main problem faced by human being. Data hiding technique is one of the solutions. However, hiding credential information within a multimedia file such as image reduces its visual quality. Therefore, unauthorized users may suspect the existance of secret data within that image. In the past years, various data hiding algorithms have been developed by researchers to overcome the problem of high distortion of image after data embedding process. Achieving a high quality stego image, however, is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we proposed a new data hiding algorithm based on different expansion. It aims to enhance the quality of stego image for a given payload size. The new algorithm is evaluated on various medical images. Thereafter, the experimental results show that the visual quality is improved; and increasing the embedding capacity leads to more noises. Therefore, a better choice of base point and a reduced difference expansion affect the quality of stego image.

Abstract

In long dc transmission lines identification of fault is important for transferring a large amount of power. In bipolar Line commutated converter transmission lines are subjected to harsh weather condition so accurate and rapid clearance of fault is essential. A comparative study of the bipolar system with both converters healthy and one converter tripped is studied. Most of the research paper has focussed on transmission line faults in bipolar mode but none of them had focussed when HVDC system works in monopolar mode after the fault. In the proposed scheme the voltage signals are extracted from both poles of the rectifier ends and are processed to identify the faults in transmission lines.The Artificial neural network is utilised in detecting the fault in both bipolar and monopolar system. Since it can identify the relationship between input and output data to detect the fault pattern it can be utilised under all conditions. Moreover, benefits of the proposed method are its accuracy, no requirement of the communication system as it acquires data from one end and has a reach setting of 99%.

Abstract

In deregulated electricity markets, generation companies (GENCOs) make unit commitment (UC) decisions based on a profit maximization objective in what is termed profit based unit commitment (PBUC). PBUC is done for the GENCOs demand which is a summation of its bilateral demand and allocations from the spot energy market. While the bilateral demand is known, allocations from the spot energy market depend on the GENCOs bidding strategy. A GENCO thus requires an optimal bidding strategy (OBS) which when combined with a PBUC approach would maximize operating profits. In this paper, a solution of the combined OBS-PBUC problem is presented. An evolutionary particle swarm optimization (EPSO) algorithm is implemented for solving the optimization problem. Simulation results carried out for a test power system with GENCOs of differing market strengths show that the optimal bidding strategy depends on the GENCOs market power. Larger GENCOs with significant market power would typically bid higher to raise market clearing prices while smaller GENCOs would typically bid lower to capture a larger portion of the spot market demand. It is also illustrated that the proposed EPSO algorithm has a better performance in terms of solution quality than the classical PSO algorithm.

Abstract

Modeling of power systems is essential to perform various network analyses. Voltage regulation, line losses and transmission line efficiency are greatly affected by transmission line parameters. Hence, accurate modeling of transmission line is required. The aim of this paper is to study the impact of characteristic and surge impedances on voltage profile, voltage regulation and transmission line efficiency.
