Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

The practical elements determining success in learning a foreign language are willingness to communicate (WTC) factors (McIntyre, Clement, Dornyei, and Noels, 1998). This research aimed to determine students' willingness to speak English in classroom interaction. This study utilized questionnaires and interviews conducted using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method, with an explanatory research design. The information was gathered through the distribution of a questionnaire and interviews. The population of this study was the tenth student class of SMAN 10 Padang. 6 students were interviewed through focus group discussions, and 72 students used the questionnaire. Furthermore, the researcher summarized the interview results and used descriptive statistics to analyze the questionnaire. The research found that situational and individual factors influenced students' willingness to communicate in class. The majority of students willing to use English in class interactions was at a high level, and the following factors influenced such: Communication Behavior factor, Behavioral Intention, Situated Antecedents, Motivation Propensities, Affective-Cognitive context, and Social-individual context

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, learning had to be changed from face-to-face activities in class distance learning. While distance learning is already supported by a number technologies, there are still gaps that cause learning to be lacking effective. One concern is long-term online learning can lead to learning loss or reduced academic knowledge. This study aims to know the platform used in writing class, the advantages and disadvantages of online learning, and learning loss that happened in writing class. The participant of this study were students of the 2021 English Language Education study program who learned paragraph writing, totaling 23 students filled out questionnaires. This study used descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The researcher used purposive sampling technique. In collecting data, the researcher used questionnaires. The results of the study show that: (1) applications that are often used in online learning are LMS/E-Learning and WhatsApp, (2) advantages of online learning, Online learning can reduce operational lecture costs such as transportation to campus (gas money), (3) disadvantages of online learning, online learning is limited due to students’ domicile and poor internet network access, (4) learning loss in online learning, including: students struggle to study for complex material while studying online, students cannot ask their friends to correct grammatical errors, and students have trouble finding examples of natural English writing.

The pandemic of COVID-19 spread around the world forced the educational institution to transform the process of learning from offline learning to online learning. The implementation of online learning becomes a challenge for educational instructors such as teachers and lecturers. Professional development for lecturers is a program done in order to maintain lecturers’ teaching quality and overcome the problems that exist in conducting online learning. The practice of online peer observation aims to support the sharing of practice and builds self-awareness about the impact of one’s teaching practice in order to affect change. The aim of this research is to apply the practice of peer observation in online learning towards the lecturers of intermediate reading class. This research used descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Through purposive sampling, the lecturers who were currently conducting intermediate reading class were selected. Data were collected through 3 stages of teaching observation using observation sheets and interview session. The results showed that the practice of online peer observation could be implemented in a synchronous way through virtual meeting platform. Through teaching observation, the peer was able to observe the lecturer’s teaching process by referring to appropriate aspects of online teaching. Other results are the perceptions of observed lecturers towards the practice of online peer observation in intermediate reading class. The practice of online peer observation was able to be conducted in English Language and Literature Department as a teaching developmental activities. However, there are some aspects of teaching that were missed when conducting peer observation in online, so that there are needed different criteria of observation between the online teaching and the offline one.

The purpose of this study is to analyze and obtain empirical data on students' speaking ability through role-play technique in new normal era at grade 8 of SMPN 13 Padang. This research used quantitative descriptive methods. The informants in this study were 46 grade 8 students and an 8th grade English teacher at SMP Negeri 13 Padang. The data collection technique used in this study was a speaking test using a role-play technique which was assessed based on speaking indicators and packaged in the form of an assessment rubric and an interview with one of the grade 8 English teachers at SMP Negeri 13 Padang. The results of this study show that the speaking ability of students in grade 8 of SMP Negeri 13 Padang is at the average level with the mean score of 57. The highest component is comprehension with a percentage of 63%. In addition, the results of interviews with the English teacher show that there are several problems in speaking teaching, namely the lack of student confidence, the stigma of students who think that English lessons are difficult, and the lack of mastery of vocabulary. Online learning carried out before the new normal era also affects students' self-confidence. Therefore, teachers apply various methods and strategies in English PBM, especially speaking.

The purpose of this research was to discover whether the lesson plan composed by the MTI Pasia English teacher match or even mismatch based on curriculum 2013. Since the limited time during covid-19 pandemic, the teacher had issues establishing the device used to assess and the appropriate rubric by way of the indicator, as well as the construction of the standard of competency and basic competency, and also in selecting effective methods to be appropriate with the indicators.Another problem since teacher did not use media or other learning tools in the class. So, it made the class monotonous and boring. No visualization could make students less enthusiastic in the learning process.This research used descriptive qualitative research. It was conducted at MTI Pasia. The instruments were observation sheet and documention.The result showed 3 (three) conditions were match (Identity of Lesson Plan, the objectives of study and method of study), 3 (three) of them were less match (Score competence, basic competence and Indicator of competence achievement and the material of study) and the rest three condition were mismatch (Media, tools, and sources of study, the steps of teaching or teaching activity and Assessments) related to teacher’s lesson plan component.

The analysis of students' writing skills at MAN 1 Padusunan. This study intends to show how students' self-efficacy was in writing English language learning at State MAN 1 Padusunan. The researcher utilized SPSS 22.0 and Microsoft Excel to analyze the data for this descriptive qualitative research study. Six courses were randomly chosen to make up the 87 student study samples. The research's data came from a survey given to grade X students at MAN 1 Padusunan. According to the data analysis, the majority of students (56.3%) fell into the category of medium level selfefficacy in English writing. Some of them (43.7%) pupils had the highest degree of self-efficacy in learning the English language, while (0%) of the students had the lowest level. Based on the study's findings, it can be said that State MAN 1 Padusunan students had a medium level of self-efficacy.

This study aims to find out students’ Perception Toward the Use of E-learning In Intermediate Listening Course at the English Department UNP. The design of this research is the descriptive research design. The data was collected by using questionnaires and interview guidelines. In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling as a sampling technique to choose the participants. The participants of this study consist of 54 students from K1 and K2 2021 of English Education at UNP. The results of this study indicate that the students' Perception Of the Use of E-learning in the Intermediate Listening Course at the English Department UNP is positive. Based on the calculation of the average from all indicators, students’ perception toward using E-learning In the Intermediate Listening Courses is at 75% in the good category.

This research was conducted to measure the students’ ability, to find out the types of error and its cause in pronouncing English dental fricative consonants produced by students’ of 2020 class at the English education program of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research was design using descriptive quantitative method. In this study, the researcher focused on the second-year English education students from K2-K5 class who had taken phonetic and phonology class. There are 30 students as the sample of this study. To collect the data, pronunciation test and Stimulated Recall Interview were used as the instrument where students’ voices were being recorded and being transcript. The findings of this study were students’ ability in pronouncing dental fricative consonants was fair with the percentage of 60%. The dominant type of error that happened in this study was misformation with 89,21% or 645 error out of 723 error. While for the cause of pronunciation error, based on the interview, the dominant reason was ineffectiveness of online learning due to Covid-19 pandemic.

This research focus on problem in assessment for reading literacy to promote high order thinking, critical thinking, and argumentative thinking skills. This research is descriptive research. It required observing and describing a subject’s behavior in addition to using written information from teachers obtain through observation, interview, and questionnaire. Students are also given questionnaire to complete, in order to collect data from them. The subjects of this research were 5 teachers and 78 students from 2 schools selected. The techniques of data collection were analyzing observation, interview, and questionnaire. The findings of this research from all questions, it was found that the students had problems in the aspect of reading literacy competence, but from the results of the questionnaire to the teacher, they had no difficulty in making tests based on the aspects of reading literacy competence. in other finding, students have difficulty answering questions based on the text, however teachers find problems in creating the test based on kinds of text.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the ability of fifth-semester students in the English Language Education Program UNP's use degrees of comparison in adjectives and adverbs. The Participants in this study were 35 fifth-semester students at the English Language Education Program of the UNP. This study was a quantitative study. Tests and interviews were conducted for this study. According to the study's findings, 55.42% of students were able to master the items of positive degrees in adjectives, followed by the items of comparative degrees in adjectives, with 61.14% of students being able to master those items. Of the students, 77.14% demonstrated the ability to master the items of the superlative degree in adjectives. In terms of adverbs, 72.57% of students were able to master the items of positive degree in adverbs, 66.85% of students were able to master the items of comparative degree in adverbs, and 38.28% of students were able to master the items of superlative degree in adverbs. This indicates that more than 50% of the students had mastered the degree of comparison. The respondents supported this finding, stating that the fifth-semester students in the English language education program have problem comprehending comparisons for the following reasons: They misplaced the article “the” in the superlative form and forgot to add “than” after the adjective in the comparative form. They also did not know how to modify words that ended in -y to -i and add -er/-est. Finally, they did not understand the purpose of using irregular forms.
