Abstract

Group work activity is one of the common learning methods that the teacher uses to engage students in the teaching and learning process. This study aimed to determine the students’ perception of group work activity in English class. Descriptive quantitative research was employed in this study. The tenth-grade students were the population of this research. There were 72 students selected as the sample through the purposive sampling method. Data were collected through a questionnaire including 4 indicators and semi-structured interviews. The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive technique. Findings revealed that students had a positive perception toward the implementation of group work activity in English class. They agree that group work could motivate them to be more active in the learning process and increase their speaking skill. It was also found that students felt more confident to speak English in groups rather than individually. Moreover, they did not find a very significant problem that hindered the implementation of group work activity in English class.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether or not using the Grammar Tool: Pronoun application has a significant impact on students' understanding of possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives. Participants in this study are seventh-grade students at SMPN 52 in Jakarta. There are 216 students that classified into six classes. VII A is selected as the experimental class by the researcher utilizing a cluster random sampling method to select one class. This research was held over eight meetings and this research was carried out outside of school hours. The researcher used the multiple choice test as the instrument to collect the data. There were 40 questions but after the validity and reliability test, only 29 questions that can be used as the instrument for this research. After the research is done, it is possible to say that using the Grammar Tool: Pronoun has an effect on how well students understand possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives there was an improvement of the students understanding on possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives. It can be proved by the data findings and discussion. The results of the data analysis indicated that the null hypothesis examined in the study cannot be accepted because the significant value of the 2-tailed test was less than 0.05 (0.05). The alternative hypothesis, which indicated that the use of the Grammar Tool: Pronoun is effective on students' understanding of possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives, was accepted as a result of this study.

Abstract

Small Group Discussion is one of the techniques in the teaching and learning process such as for English speaking class. This study was conducted to find students’ perception on the implementation of small group discussion in English speaking class. This study used descriptive research. The data was collected by using, questionnaire, and interview. The participants of this study were the students of the second grade of SMP N 1 Palembayan. It consisted of three classes that are taught by a teacher. There were 95 students in the academic year 2022/2023. The result of this study showed that students had a positive perception on the implementation of small group discussion in English speaking class with a percentage of 52% in the excellent category and 48% in the good category
