Abstract

This research analyzed the level of political polarization in social media comments using the CDA approach and Van Dijk's ideological square model to identify discourse topics and discourse strategies presented by supporters of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates using the big data collection method. The research method was descriptive-qualitative. This method was used to analyze the formation of discrimination issues based on comments on social media X. The data for the first research problem were comments that used discourse topics, while the data for the second research problem were discriminatory discourse strategies. The analysis incorporated Van Dijk’s ideological square: emphasizing positive things about us, emphasizing negative things about them, de-emphasizing positive things about us, emphasizing negative things about them. The research findings revealed that there were 6 discourse topics and 12 discourse strategies in shaping the issue of discrimination by portraying the individual or group negatively.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types of code mixing and the reasons of code mixing used in Fellexandro Ruby YouTube channel. The data that were used in this study were utterances in video content entitled People in Their 20s Must Know These 5 Things: My 3.2M Views Buka Talks that taken from Fellexandro Ruby YouTube channel. This study used direct observation methods in collecting data. The steps that were done in collecting data were transcribing data, note-taking, and identifying data. Data were analyzed using theory from Muysken (2000) to analyze the types of code mixing and the theory from Hoffmann (1991) to analyze the reason of code mixing. The result of data analysis was presented descriptively by providing detailed explanations. The study showed that alternation, congruent lexicalization and insertion are the kind of code mixing that were used by Fellexandro Ruby in this channel. Insertion was the most dominant type with a total of 25 data. Meanwhile, the reason for using code mixing were expressing group identity or solidarity, talking about a particular topic, interjection, repetition used for clarification and quoting somebody else. Talking about a particular topic was common reason for code mixing that found in the data with a total of 25 data.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of a novel entitled Breasts and Eggs (2020) by Mieko Kawakami. This research aims to find out how women’s body dissatisfaction is portrayed in the novel. This research is descriptive qualitative research which uses body image and feminist lens to analyze the issues of this research. This research indicates that the novel shows three aspects of body dissatisfaction which are: negative self perception of body shape, negative comparative perception of body image, and negative attitude concerning body image alteration experienced by some of the female characters. This research also indicates that patriarchal culture influences the creation of beauty standards through two things. The first one is through the media that promotes women in sexy figure. The second one is in the work place in which the men prefer Jiang Li with youthful appearance rather than Suzuka who is talented. In conclusion, Body dissatisfaction that is experienced commonly by women cannot be separated from the beauty standard created by patriarchal culture.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of the poetry collection Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur (2011). This analysis is only carried out in 2 chapters, namely the hurting and the healing chapter. This research examines several forms of gender inequality and forms of women struggle’s struggles to get out of this gender inequality. The form of gender inequality contained is in the form of harassment experienced by women. This research also discusses the form of women’s struggle in obtaining freedom and happiness. Researchers’ uses qualitative descriptive techniques using feminist theory that can make women free to get happiness. The result of this study indicate that women are able to change the situation by fighting the injustice they experience and are able to stand alone without a man in their life.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the degree of language loyalty of bahasa Tansi speakers in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, through a sociolinguistic analysis focusing on lexical differences, language loyalty, and language attitudes. This quantitative and descriptive qualitative research examined whether bahasa Tansi speakers are loyal in using the language or not. Data were collected using the 206 of Swadesh list words, questionnaires, interviews, and recorded conversations. The findings revealed that bahasa Tansi has 73.78% phonetic differences compared to Minangkabau, suggesting significant language divergence. Additionally, the study highlighted a strong sense of language loyalty and positive attitudes among speakers, indicating bahasa Tansi's robust sociolinguistic presence. Consequently, bahasa Tansi is classified as a creole with unique linguistic and cultural attributes, contributing to the linguistic diversity of West Sumatra.

Abstract

This study aims at indentifying the kinds of Symbols and finding the dominant of the Symbols that are found in The Secret Garden novel. What type of symbols in The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and the meaning of symbols found. This research uses descriptive qualitative method by taking sources from a book by Frances Hodgson Burnett entitled The Secret Garden, looking for and describing in detail the symbols that exist. Data in the novel is analyzed using the theory of Symbols. The results of this study show that there 9 kinds of symbols; green, black, earth, water, sun, bird, seeds, rose, and garden which has different meaning. The symbols that appear are Frances' views in interpreting an object, so that it can be understood in her literary works. The dominant Symbols found in The Secret Garden novel are Garden. The garden is the main theme in the novel which has a symbol as affection. In analyzing it, the first thing to do is to read the entire novel and understand which ones have symbols in them. The advice from future researchers is to understand the symbols contained in several classifications to distinguish, so be careful in concluding the meaning of symbols in the novel with same interpretation. This study is important to know the message or meaning that the author wants to convey in Frances work.

Abstract

Several aims have been established, including the examination of onomatopoeia types and the technique employed for translating onomatopoeia in the webtoon comic titled "Good/Bad Fortune" by Ariel Duyung.The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, and the data for this study is divided into two parts. The first set of data comprises onomatopoeic words found in the original version of the comic "Good/Bad Fortune," while the second set consists of the English translation version. In total, there are 62 instances of data. Moreover, six translation techniques are employed for translating onomatopoeia, with the following distribution: 27 (43.5%) cases of establishing equivalents, 27 (43.5%) cases of borrowing, 3 (4.8%) cases of adaptation, 1 (1.6%) case of modulation, 3 (4.8%) cases of discursive creation, and 1 (1.6%) case of substitution.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of three poems by Zelda Quakawoot entitled Your Way- Our Way- Truth (2015), Langston Hughes entitled I Look at the World (2009), and Dan Davis entitled Tribal Lines (2000). This analysis explores the resistance of the Aboriginal people represented by the speakers in the three poems in obtaining their rights and justice. This resistance needs to be carried out by the Aboriginal people to fight the acts of brutality they experienced . An analysis of the three poems also reveals the extent of resistance Aboriginal people took against brutality. The study of these poems uses the concept of Post-Colonial theory by Edward Said. The results of this study indicate that the Aboriginal people already have the awareness to fight toward the acts of brutality that they experience. The analysis discusses: 1) Forms of brutality toward Aboriginal people, 2) impacts of brutality towards the lives of Aboriginal people, 3) Resistance made by Aboriginal people against brutality.

Abstract

A local language may disappear due to some factors. Modernity and melting pot are able to shift the local language. Malay Kepulauan is the local language of Batam island, and it tends to be left. It needs to be documented. This qualitative research gathered information of Malay Kepulauan from the locals. The aim was to reveal the process of its articulation. The data were taken from some Kampong Tua: Nongsa, Sanggau, Tanjung Uma, Telok Air, and Tanjung Riau. Observational method included semi-structured interview and record. The data in term of sounds were transcribed phonemically to capture the process of deletion and insertion. The result of this research was that Malay experienced reciprocal assimilation, synchronic dissimilation, aphaeresis deletion, syncope deletion, apocope deletion, epenthesis insertion, neutralization, and metathesis. The phonemic environment of phonological rules is /b/, /p/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /Ɂ/, /m/, /n/, /Ɍ/, /z/, /ʝ/, /h/, /j/. /w/, and /l/. The vocalic sounds involved the alteration; /ʌ - ə/, /ʊ - ɒ/, /e - I/. The benefit of having assimilation, dissimilation, deletion, insertion, neutralization, and metathesis in pronouncing is resulting in smoother, more effortless, and more economical transition from one to another sound. However, phonological rules phenomena in Malay Kepulauan do not change the meaning of the words lexically

Abstract

This study aimed identify and examine the derivational affixes present in the short story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" by Ursula K. Le Guin (1973). The types of derivational affixes and how derivational affixes utilized in short story of "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K.Leguin. This research used descriptive qualitative study in which the data of this study was taken from the short story of "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" by Ursula K.Leguin. In analyzing the short story, the researcher used (Lieber:2009) theory to identifying the types of derivational affixes and used (Yule:2010) to utilizing derivational affixes. . There are 76 derivational affixes found in the short story. There are 43 class changing suffix, 1 class maintaining prefix and 28 class maintaining suffix. In the short story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas," several derivational affixes are prominently found, enriching the narrative with layers of meaning and enhancing the reader's engagement. Some of the most frequently observed derivational affixes include; -ness, -ing, -ful, -er, -ed, -ly, and -ous.
