Abstract

Biosorption is an alternative method that can be used to overcome the presence of heavy metal chromium (III) in water. Green algae Mougeotia sp. Can be used as a biosorbent, because it has functional groups such as carboxyl, carbonyl, amine and hidroxyl. To find out how big the role of each functional group is modified. Where the functional group to be modified is the carboxyl group using methanol solution. In this research, the rebellion was carried out with a batch system, carried out by stirring the heavy metal solution with biosorbent then filtered, the resulting filtrate was analyzed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The variables to be tested is concentration. Based on the research results, the optimum absorption of green algae biomass Mougeotia sp. Against heavy metal ions Cr3+ took place at concentration of 250 mg/L with a maximum absorption capacity (qm) of 5.3050 mg/g. This biosorption process follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation with an R2 value of 0.9412.

Abstract

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used plastics, especially in packaging. The many uses of PET along with the increasing amount of PET waste that has negative impact on the environment because PET is a plastic that can only be used for one time use and cannot be decomposed naturally. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle PET by depolymerizing by glycolysis into bis (2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate) BHET. In this research, glycolysis was using EG variations of 20, 30, 40, and 50 mL and temperature variations of 166, 176, 186, and 196 oC. The results obtained 83.425% BHET yield under optimum conditions of EG as much as 30 mL and temperature of 196 oC. The results was characterized by Fourier Transform Infra Red type perkin elmer universal ATL Sampling Accessors 735 B at wave numbers 600 - 4000 cm-1 to determine the functional groups that make up the BHET.

Abstract

Magnetic nanoparticles have become an interesting topic in recent years, as magnetic nanoparticles have a greater degree of magnetism, high saturation magnetization, and ease of modification and handling. One of them is the Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles which are used in various fields, such as in the biomedical sector which acts as antibacterial, hyperthermia, anticancer, etc. This study aims to synthesize magnetic nanoparticles of iron oxide Fe3O4 using phenolic compounds contained in red betel leaf extract as a styling agent with a co-precipitation method based on green chemistry and to characterize them. The nanoparticles formed were measured for their magnetic force with a gaussmeter and characterized by functional groups, particle size and particle surface morphology using FTIR, XRD and SEM. The data obtained show that the optimal composition for the formation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is to compare FeCl2: FeCl3 (0.01 mol: 0.02 mol) with a volume of 5 mL of red betel leaf extract which produces a force magnetic 0.16 mT. The characterization by FTIR shows the aromatic groups O-H, C = O carboxylate and C-H which indicate the presence of organic compounds, namely phenolic (gallic acid) which functions as a protective agent (styling agent) of Fe3O4. The XRD test obtained information on the average size of the formed nanoparticles based on the FWHM value (full width at half maximum) using Scherer's equation, which is 26.66 nm. Meanwhile, SEM data shows that the shape or morphology of the Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles is needle-like.Keywords — Nanoparticles, iron oxide Fe3O4, green chemistry, red betel leaf extract (Piper Crocatum)

Abstract

Activated carbon from palm kernel shell has been prepared by using ultrasonic assisted activation.  Carbonization was conducted at mild condition of 400ºC for 90 minutes heating time.  Ultrasonic irradiation (35 Watt,  42 KHz) for 15 minutes increases the carbon iodine number from 452.4021 mg/g  up to 817.4907 which is higher than SNI 06-3730-1995 requirement of mg/ g 750 mg/g for activated carbon. FTIR spectra results show that activated carbon has -OH groups at wave numbers of 3000-3500 cm-1, C = C at wave numbers of 1550-1650 cm-1, CO at wave numbers of 1000-1260 cm-1 and CH at wave numbers of 810- 770 cm-1 . Adsorption test results showed that the prepared activated carbon was able to absorb Pb+2 ion at the optimum concentration of 60 mg/L. Adsorption isotherm study conducted by Freundlich equation produces a regression coefficient R2 = 0.835 with a maximum absorption capacity of 11.0783mg/ g.

Abstract

Heavy metals are dangerous that can pollute the environtment and cause health problems because they are toxic and carcinogenic, one example is the metal ion Cr+6. On eway to overcome heavy metal ion in waste is the biosorption method. This research was conducted to determine the absorption capacity of green algae (Mougeotia sp.) biomass modified with methanol and determine the effect of initial concentration of the solution of Cr+6 metal ion. The result showed that the optimum absorption of Cr+6 metal ion by green algae (Mougeotia sp.) biomass modified with methanol was at concentration of 250 mg/L. The maximum absorption capacity (qm) obtained is 5,1020 mg/g. Cr+6 metal ion biosorption using green algae (Mougeotia sp.) biomass modified with methanol fulfils the Langmuir Isotherm equation with a coefficient value (R2) of 0,955.

Abstract

Mesoporous silika with a pore diameter of 2-50 nm can be used in various fields such as adsorption, sensor, medicine, immobilization of metal nanoparticles in catalyst synthesis and stationary phase for chromatography. Mesoporous silika synthesis was carried out using sodium silicate form rijang stone West Sumatera. Mesoporous silica was synthesized using the sol-gel method. Synthesis was carried out to determine the effect of aging time (24 hours and 48 hours) on the crystallity and particle size of mesoporous silica. Mesoporous silica was characterized using XRD (X-Ray Difraction) to see the crystallinity of the silica and the crystal size of the resulting sample. The result of XRD data measurement showed tha the peaks appeared at a high angle of 2Ɵ=23o, a large mesoporous silica particle size and high crystallinity were obtained at 24 hours of aging.

Abstract

Surfactants are active compounds that act on the surface of a liquid, which can reduce the surface tension between oil and water. The purpose of this study was to determine the solubility of yellow and black inorganic pigments in water in oil microemulsion gelation, which was applied to ballpoint ink. The method used for sol preparation is the gelation method (sol-gel process). The sol gel process is the process of forming inorganic compounds through chemical reactions in solution, and occurs at a temperature of 65oC. The sol gel process undergoes a phase change from the colloid suspension (sol) and finally forms a network called a gel. Dye solubility was observed by the amount of yellow and black inorganic pigment solutes in water in oil microemulsion. The solubility of the yellow pigment is 0.096 grams, while the black pigment is 0.088 grams. To see the density of the pigment, a density test was carried out. The total density produced in yellow inorganic pigment is 0.933 gram / cm3 and black inorganic pigment is 0.914 gram / cm3. Measurement of the refractive index and turbidity (turbidity) to determine the homogeneity of the yellow and black pigments was carried out using an ABBE refractometer and a turbidimeter. The results of the refractive index measurement are associated with pigment solubility, the greater the pigment solubility, the higher the refractive index and turbidity values.
