Abstract

This paper shows Mochtar Lubis’ Kuli Kontrak has the political relations with the New Order’s negative stigma of communism; Kuli Kontrak was culturally part of spreading the stigma. Every element in the short stories collection has different functions, but interrelated, in maintaining the negative stigma. The elements discussed in this paper, first, the intrinsic elements, namely the narrative strategy is divided into three main parts. Second, extrinsic elements: namely the covers which contains a painting and endorsements from figures. Third, the political element: the year of publication of the book and political backgrounds in Indonesia at that time. Discussion of each element followed by politics of aesthetics analysis, namely analysis of the political impacts of the use of these elements to social conditions, either directly or indirectly, expected by the author or not.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the discourse revealed by James Cameron in Avatar movie (2009). This study uses Edward Said’s framework to answer the problem above. This study uses qualitative approach with descriptive design. The data source of this study is Avatar movie (2009) by James Cameron. The technique of data collection is done by doing the strategy of contrapuntal reading. The techniques of data analysis are done by some steps as follows: First, watching the movie for many times until the writer gets the comprehensive understanding. Second, writing the narration and the event down to show the problem about colonization in the movie. Third, observing every problem with using Edward Said’s framework. Fourth, presenting the result of the analysis. The result of this study shows that James Cameron reveals anti-colonial discourse which is opposite with the West’s image that used to be known as the subject. Furthermore, he also strongly criticizes the issue of the environment, the arrogance of the West and the colonization towards another nation through this movie.

Abstract

Brief, meaningful expression or sentence which includes comparison, parable, suggestion, principle of life, or rule of behaviour is called the proverb. Japan is a country that is highly influence by Chinese culture. One of these influences can be viewed from its proverbs that are widely spread and still known until now in the society. There are many Japanese proverbs which include teaching or philosophy from the Chinese folklores. The philosophy comes from the ethics of Confucius and Buddhism. This paper discusses ten proverbs with the philosophy from China. These ten proverbs are ishi ni tatsu ya, issui no yume, gashin shoutan, gyofu no ri, keikou to naru mo gyuugo to naru nakare, dasoku, chousan boshi, ten’i muhou, tougenkyou, and haisui no jin. The aspects related to these ten proverbs that will be discussed are their history, Chinese philosophy within the proverbs, the use of proverbs in the context of sentence, and the functions in which the proverbs have pragmatic and social functions.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the movement of religious literature in Indonesia after the 1998 reform. The movement embodied in authorship organization called Forum Lingkar Pena (FLP). FLP grow and develop in that time as the implications of modernist Islamic movement that carried the young people educated in various universities in Indonesia. As one of the literary community, FLP trying to popularize transcendental literary movement that is not profane and worldly. FLP be the community of Islamic literature that trying to enlighten the public with literature. During its development, the literary movement of FLP community into one of the vehicle for thousands of young Indonesian to make literature as a medium a mental reform based on Islamic values. Movement conducted by FLP is a creative alternative to the development of Islamic literature in Indonesia.
