Abstract

This research is a classroom action research. The objectives of this study were: (1) to find out whether there were significant differences in students' speaking abilities after being taught through Talking Chips techniques, and (2) to find out which techniques were better for improving students. 'Speaking ability. This research was conducted on second grade students at YAS Sindangkerta High School. The method used in this study is Class Action Research. The research was on two cycles with total meetings were seven; three meetings were for tests, and four meetings were for treatment. Each cycle covered the step of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test in SPSS 16.0. There is a significant difference of the students’ speaking ability achievement between the students who were taught through the Talking Chips technique and taught without Talking Chips technique. In Cycle 1 the increase score 59.62 while in cycle 2 is 72.25. From the result of the data, teaching speaking through Talking Chips technique is more effective to increase students’ speaking ability because Talking Chips technique can give more enjoyable speaking atmosphere for students in the classroom. Keywords:  Talking Chips, Speaking ,Car

Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out endophoric references in Mark Zuckerberg biography and the relationship between discourse analysis and pragmatic. The research used descriptive qualitative research design. The data obtained from Mark Zuckerberg biography written by the biography website. The data are analyzed using Halliday & Hasan’s theory (1976) of reference cohesion reference is one of the cohesive devices. The result shows that endophoric reference exists in Mark Zuckerberg biography endophoric. Endophoric consist of two types, the first is anaphoric and the second is cataphoric. In this research there are five type cohesive devices that are usually used in texts like substitution, references, ellipsis, lexical cohesion, and conjunctions. In the research found that cataphoric is dominant than anaphoric because the subject is located in the beginning of the sentences. Cohesive devices not only focused on lexical cohesion, but also focused on ellipsis and substitution and reference.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to analyze the tense and aspects found inside the ”Tangled” movie script. The data source is a sentence or speech the verb contains tense and aspects found on “Tangled” movie script. The study applied descriptive qualitative method.This study belongs to a descriptive research because it collects and analyzes the data, after that draws a conclusion based on the data. Then this research belongs to qualitative research because it involves analyzing and explaining the data. Additionally, this research is designed in descriptive qualitative research because the research examines the types of the language used of Tense and Aspects in "Tangled" Movie Scripts. In this research the data source is “Tangled” Movie Script.In “Tangled” movie script, there was 61 sentences that researcher found in the uses of tense and aspect. From the result above the dominant types on tense and aspect in “Tangled” movie script was simple future and present perfect. In the “Tangled” movie script the researcher didn’t find tense and aspect in past perfect progressive, future progressive, future perfect and future perfect progressive.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to investigate students’ perception of snowball throwing technique in teaching grammar. The research used qualitative descriptive research method and the participants of the research were second grade of SMPN 2 Padalarang. The data were obtained from questionnaire and interview. Questionnaire was used to obtain information about students' perception towards the implementation of snowball throwing in teaching grammar and interview was also used to get more specific information that cannot be accessed through questionnaire. From the questionnaire, the students answered strongly agree is 66,67%, agree 19,44% and disagree 13,89% that this technique is good to be implemented in teaching grammar. Therefore, the result shows that the implementation of snowball throwing technique in teaching grammar can help students to learn English grammar. Based on questionnaire and interview, they enjoyed learning with this technique and they showed some improvement on their participation of learning activity, their their creativity and their cooperative skill when learning with this technique.Keywords: Grammar, Snowball Throwing Technique , Students’ Perception.

Abstract

Vocabulary is important in English language. Because, to make a sentence an adequate vocabulary is needed. So, the researcher apply a method in the classroom which can make students motivated to learn vocabulary. The aim of the research is to know that the crossword puzzle is effective to improve students’ vocabulary or not through the use of crossword puzzles among seventh-grade students of MTs At-Taqwa Cihampelas in the academic year of 2018/2019. The method used in this research is quantitative technique and the pre-experimental research design conducted in one class. The population in this research is seventh-grade students of MTs At-Taqwa Cihampelas with the total number of the population are 104 students consisting of 3 classes, and the sample is class VII.A that consist of 30 students. The data is collected with the pretest and posttest as an instrument. The researcher conducted the tests before (pre-test) and after (post-test). After that the researcher give students a treatment consists of five meetings. The result show that the mean score of pre-test was 41.83, and the post-test was 75.67 after gives treatment uses crossword puzzle. It means that teaching English vocabulary using a crossword puzzle was effective media to improve students’ vocabulary at seventh-grade. Keywords:  crossword puzzle, students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research aims to find out types of thematic progression pattern used by students in writing descriptive text and to know the dominant thematic progression used in students’ writing descriptive text. This research employed a descriptive-qualitative research design. The respondents of the research were eleven grade students of SMKN 1 Cimahi. The data collection was documentation. The source of the data was descriptive texts written by students of Instrumentasi Otomatisasi Process-D. There were 9 texts written by the respondents. The collected data was analyzed by using the theory from Bloor & Bloor (2013) as the theoretical to analyze the data. The result of this research found that students used three types of Thematic Progression in students’ writing descriptive text, they are Constant Theme, Linear Theme, Split Rheme. Furthermore, Constant Theme is the most frequent themes used in students’ writing descriptive text.

Abstract

Abstract Generally, problems faced by the students in learning english is the difficulty to learn vocabulary. Any learners or teachers aware that vocabulary is the important element of language proficiency. The practical problem was faced by the 8th grade students of SMP PLUS YPP DARUSSURUR CIMAHI. Based on facts, the Vocabulary Self Collection Strategy (VSS) is a creative teaching and learning strategy to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. VSS is an interractive learning method where students choose words from a text, use contexts and other resources to find out the meaning of the words, and give those words to be learned by others students. The research design of the research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The results of the study indicate that VSS could improve learning in a class based on a qualitative or quantitative perspective. Based on the results of the qualitative, it could be seen from the classroom situation, the atmosphere of teaching and learning, students participation, and students responses during teaching and learning activities. Meanwhile, quantitative results could be examined from the scores of students in doing the exercises. Thus this research stated that VSS was an effective technique for solving students' practical problems in mastering vocabulary.Keywords : Improve, Vocabulary mastery, VSS, CAR

Abstract

English is one of the students’ needs to learn. In English there is an important skill that must be mastered that is reading comprehension. Without that, students’ have difficulties in understanding the text, especially narrative text. The researcher conducting Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. The researcher used quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Quantitative data relates to the students’ reading scores in pre-test and post-test. Qualitative data concerns with any occasions and changes happening during classroom activities. The purpose of the research was to figure out whether there is any significant improvement in the students' reading comprehension after being taught by implementing project-based learning. The sample of the research is XI RPL in Vocational High School that consisted of 34 students. The result indicates that the students' reading comprehension of narrative text by using PBL has increased. The improvement covers two points, they are (1) Improvement on students’ mean score. Mean score of pretests was 60.32. score of posttests 1 was 74.19. Which the average score of posttests 2 was 87.42, (2) Students’ reading comprehension was improved. It can be accomplished that there is a significant enhance in the students' achievement after they were taught by project-based learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the implementation of snowball throwing technique in teaching speaking and to find out the students’ participation toward the implementation of snowball throwing. This study was conducted at SMK PGRI 1 Cimahi. The students of XI AP 1 class were selected as the respondents of the research. The research used descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from classroom observation and students’ interview. The result showed that snowball throwing technique can be used effectively to improve students’ speaking skill through several stages. First, every leader explains the material to their group. Second, every student writing one question about the material. Third, the paper is rolled  into a ball and thrown from one student in a group to the other student in another group for approximately 2 minutes. Fourth, after the student gets one ball (one question), he or she is given chance to answer the question. Fifth, every group has their turn to answer the question; the group that gave wrong or incorrect answers and gets the lowest score is given a penalty. Those stages gave the students more chance to interacted in the class. It was very helpful in provide the students with more enjoyable activities which made the students involved in teaching and learning process actively.

Abstract

The direction of the research is to prove whether the discovery learning method can improve the students competence in writing descriptive text or not. The subject is the tenth grade students of MA Nurul Hidayah Batujajar which consist of 16 students. The researcher conducted 2 cycles of classroom action research as the research method. Each cycle comprised pre-test, two meetings for treatment and post-test. In collecting data, the researcher used test and non-test. From the data taken, the result tends to be satisfied. During teaching learning process, the students tend to become active participants. The results of the research showed that the students are more confident in writing descriptive text and know what to write. Furthermore, there are some improvements in their test scores which are the mean score of post-test1 in cycle one (5.65) is higher than the mean score of pretest (4.03) and the mean score of post-test2 in cycle two (6.72) is higher than the mean score of post-test1 in cycle one. From the results of the research, it can be summarized that using discovery learning method can improve the students’ writing descriptive text.
