Abstract

Technological advancement and increasing cultural diversity lead to misunderstandings in communication. Therefore, individuals need to understand impoliteness strategies to prevent misunderstandings and by understanding impoliteness strategies to increase success in communication. This phenomenon is reflected in the American talent show, America's Got Talent, which illustrates how the judges' utterances are acts of impoliteness. This study examines the types of impoliteness strategies contained in the judges' utterances on America's Got Talent in 2023 using culpeper's theory. In addition, this study also analyzes the functions of these impoliteness strategies based on Culpeper's (2011) theory, focusing on what functions the judges use the impoliteness in the show. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method that aims to analyze examples of impoliteness strategies used in the judges' utterances. In this study, researchers found all types of impoliteness strategies by Culpeper's theory other than the Withhold politeness type. In addition, the researchers also found all the functions of impoliteness used by the judges on America's Got Talent.

Abstract

In multicultural organizations, power relations are not always overtly visible. According to Discursive Closure theory (Deetz, 1992), power is often exercised subtly through everyday communication practices, such as limiting opportunities to speak, controlling discussion topics, and shaping how messages are interpreted. This study analyzes how power relations are negotiated between Swiss leadership and Indonesian and Thai employees at ATV Phuket, a small-scale multicultural tourism company in Thailand. This study employed a qualitative case study approach to explore the lived experiences of participants, including the company owner, HR manager, permanent employees, freelance workers, and former staff. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The theoretical framework was guided by Hofstede’s cultural dimensions (2010), Hall’s context culture theory (1976; 2000), and Deetz’s theory of discursive closure (1992). The findings of this study indicate that (1) the leadership adopts a high power distance approach despite originating from a low power distance culture, and (2) strategic decisions are centralized at the management level. Forms of discursive closure identified include disqualification (dismissing employee input), naturalization (framing policies as company norms), and meaning denial (rejecting the intended meaning of employees' messages). The contrast between the low context communication style of the leadership and the high context style of the employees intensifies power asymmetry and creates potential for miscommunication. The analysis reveals that power relations within small-scale multicultural organizations are continuously negotiated, yet they often benefit the party with stronger discursive control. This study contributes to the literature on culture studies and organizational communication by demonstrating how discursive closure operates within the context of cross-cultural workplace interactions.

Abstract

With the advent of communication technology, emojis have become inseparable in online communication, acting as paralinguistic elements in written online communication. This study investigates how emojis contribute to online written communications and their prominent functions, specifically in Indonesian college students' communication observed from reply posts in the X automated base account, "@collegemfs," a communication hub for college students across Indonesia. This study utilized a mixed-method approach, a quantitative method to interpret the emoji functions, and a qualitative method to observe the most frequently used emojis and their functions. Results show that emojis contribute to online written communication in the community by reflecting the expressive, interpretative, and referential functions as primary functions, and the emphatic, politeness, structural, relational, and aesthetic functions as secondary functions. The most prominent functions found are the expressive primary function (60.8% of all data) and the emphatic secondary function (85.7% of all data), with the "loudly crying emoji" being the most prevalent emoji used in the community.

Abstract

This study explores adolescent experience in young adult fiction, focusing on the tension between strict familial rules and broader social encounters through the character of Rosalyn Quest in Thieves’ Gambit by Kayvion Lewis. Raised under the maxim “A Quest can’t trust anyone in this world – except for a Quest,” Rosalyn’s carefully examined her interpretive framework about human relationship (stock of knowledge). Her stock of knowledge faces systemic destabilization when she is forced to navigate in high-stakes situations that require negotiation, collaboration, and risk-taking with strangers. The researcher uses a qualitative-descriptive method with the purpose of exploring Rosalyn Quest‘s rigid typification (categorial understanding of others as a threat) undergo phenomenological crisis through repeated contradictory experiences of genuine cooperation and reciprocal vulnerability. The study demonstrates her gradual development of intersubjectivity, from recognising other as competitors until turned into teammates. Rosalyn's motivational shift from because-motives (actions determined by past traumas) to in-order-to motives (self-chosen future goals), began in her rejection of kidnapping assignment and creating alternative solution based on autonomous ethical commitments. The revelation that her foundational trauma was orchestrated by her mother complete collapsed her lifeworld, forcing meaning reconstruction on new foundations. Rosalyn's concluding principle, "trust no one" and maintained relationships, represents not regression but advance synthesis acknowledging the possibility of betrayal and authenticity. This study extends phenomenological approaches to young adult fiction by interpreting Thieves’ Gambit as a narrative of consciousness development, where growth arises not from achieving certainty but from learning to navigate ambiguity, sustain intersubjective awareness, and enact authentic agency within limits. Through this, the novel implicitly educates readers about constructing meaning and transformation amid uncertainty and betrayal.

Abstract

This study examines how Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) function as community-based institutions that actively foster environmental awareness through daily practices and ritual communication. Focusing on the Ketapang Kepanjen Islamic boarding school, this study uses a cultural studies perspective and adopts James Carey's model of communication as ritual to explore how environmental values are embedded, practised, and internalised by santri (students) in the boarding school environment. Contrary to the dominant discourse that often associates Islamic schools with dogmatism, or even extremism, this study highlights pesantren as places of cultural transmission where ecological ethics are lived out as part of religious life. Although pesantren administrators and santri may not explicitly identify their practices as environmental activism, values such as cleanliness, moderation, collective responsibility, and respect for nature are consistently emphasized through daily routines, religious teachings, and comelan rituals. These actions are not framed as direct environmental care, but are rooted in Islamic principles that inherently advocate ecological balance. By documenting and analyzing these practices through participatory observation, this study reveals how ritual communication in pesantren life fosters a culturally embedded form of environmental awareness, rooted in spirituality, contributing to sustainable behavior that is in harmony with the moral and communal ethos of the pesantren.
