Abstract

Increased waste production has an impact on environmental problems. This has attracted social attention these days, through preventive efforts to reduce the amount of waste. One of the efforts in dealing with such a problem is by applying a zero waste lifestyle. While the existing literatures paid more attention to provide an understanding of the importance of protecting the environment and how to deal with it, this article discusses environmentally friendly lifestyle among youth. This qualitative research was conducted in the city of Makassar, South Sulawesi, between August and December 2022. There are ten informants involved in this study who have practiced zero waste lifestyle. They vary according to sex (eight women and two men), age (between 22 and 33 years), and status (three college students, two freelancers, a government employee, a bulk store employee, a public organizing staff of WALHI South Sulawesi, a content writer, and anentrepreneur. This study combined in-depth interview and observation as data our collection methods. The study shows that a zero waste lifestyle is present as a one of the efforts to the environmental problem today, aimed to minimize waste production. There are several reasons why some applies a zero waste lifestyle, namely: knowledge, environmental awareness, and thrifting. The practice of applying zero waste lifestyle is based on the 6R’s of theenvironmental sustainability concept which include rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, rot, and recycle. But, it is not easy to practice a zero waste lifestyle, there are some obstacles faced by those who practice this kind of lifestyle. These obstacles are unsupportive environment and the assumption that a zero waste lifestyle is complicated and is an expensive way of life. Despite the fact that practicing zero waste lifestyle is not an easy and requires one’s strong commitment to apply, but when this become habit, it may have a considerable impact on oneself and others when everyone thinks the same way.

Abstract

The access of the Marena indigenous people in Enrekang Regency, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia to their land has changed from time to time. Since community land is claimed by the state as state forest areas, community access is limited. When the Marena indigenous people obtained a customary forest decree from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, community access was regulated through customary control. This article focuses on the dynamics of access for the Marena indigenous people in accessing their land. This qualitative research was conducted in the Marena customary territory. There were 16 informants consisting of traditional leaders, former hamlet heads, head of AMAN, land owners, and the Marena indigenous people who do not own land in the customary forest. Primary data was collected using observation and in-depth interviews, while secondary data from various regulations (i.e. Constitution, Law, Government Regulation, Regional Regulation, District Head Decree, Constitutional Court of Indonesia Decree, etc.) and related publications (books, articles, reports, etc.) were also examined. The results of this study indicate that community access to forests is determined by state policies. In the beginning, the community had free access to their land before their plantations became state forest areas. Changes in the status of community land to state forest areas, limiting community access to their land so that the Marena indigenous people have to make some efforts, namely mediation, uprooting poultices, logging clandestinely and openly, poisoning pine trees, and expelling rude forest rangers. Changes in forestry policy after the Orde Baru era marked the era of recognition of forest management by indigenous peoples. This is used by the people in Marena's customary territory to free up their land which was previously made into state forest. For that, they are assisted by AMAN and the local government. AMAN played a role in facilitating the Marena indigenous people in legalizing their customary forest. The Enrekang Regional Government played a role in issuing the Enrekang Regency Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2016 concerning Recognition and Protection of Indigenous Peoples in Enrekang Regency and District Head Decree No. 155/KEP/II/2018 concerning Recognition of Marena Customary Law in Enrekang District recognition of customary forests. The government of Pekalobean and Singki villages played a role by giving approval for Marena's customary territory. It is undeniable that the involvement of these institutions have an important role in their land acquisition. In addition, the boundaries of customary forest areas are quite dynamic. Customary forest is a mechanism to protect community land, so that they can access their land and take advantage of natural resources in customary forests. However, customary rules need to be updated, so that they are relevant to today's context. In addition, the management of resources in the form of pine can be exploited for its economic potential by utilizing pine sap and making it a tourist attraction. Recognition of indigenous peoples needs to be tightened because it is political to reclaim access to natural resources.

Abstract

Smoking is one of the important complements in the daily life of a smoker. Currently, electric cigarettes (vape) are becoming more popular and trendy than conventional cigarettes. While existing literature looks at the effects, lifestyle, Islamic views on vaping, little (if any) literature focuses on the ethics and social disapproval of vaping, this article fills in this gap. It examines why college students switch from conventional cigarettes to vape, the ethics and rejection of vape use around others. Using qualitative approach, this study was carried out at Hasanuddin University. Those who participated in this study were 11 students whose age ranging between 19 and 22 years old and who use or consume electric cigarettes. Observation and in-depth interview were combined as data collection methods. Many students who used to smoke conventional cigarettes now become vape users. There are various reasons why students switch from conventional cigarettes to vape, namely: environmental influences, unique vape aroma, cheaper, simpler, harmless, trendy and more stylish. Apart from this, vape users also have ethics that they must adhere to when consuming vape because not everyone is permissive about using vape around them. Vape users often encounter obstacles when vaping, such as direct warnings and gestures’ warning. It is argued in this article that despite the fact that vaping use is still controversial, it has become more socially acceptable than it used to be, and applying the ethics and becoming sensible to others has contributed to such acceptability.

Abstract

Technological developments have made the world more borderless, information easier to obtain and in a short time, one of the information media is social media, including TikTok which is booming and provides a lot of information, including information about facecare. Recently, TikTok has become one of the most popular social media which displays not only facecare products, but also tips to contend with facecare. Using qualitative approach, this research was conducted in the city of Makassar. There are ten female students participated in this study, whose age ranging between 18 and 22 years old and who regularly use TikTok application and perform facecare. Data was collected using the combination of indepth interview and observation. The study shows that for female students, facecare is a series of activities that use a variety of products to maintain healthy faceskin and to deal with faceskin problems, so that it looks “glowing” (white, shining, smooth textured, and tight), like the skin of Korean artists which reflects the ideal Indonesian women's skin today. Even though there are lots of content presenting facecare products on TikTok, to choose a product, female students first understand their skin type, the variety of facecare products, look for products that are suitable for their skin type. Skin types vary from normal skin, oily skin, combination skin, or sensitive skin. In terms of product variety, facecare consists of two, namely: basic products and advanced products with their respective functions. While the former includes products for cleansing, toning, moisturizing, protecting, eye creaming, the latter consists of masking, seruming, essence, ampouling (ampoules), and acne spotting (acne spots) for those with acne. Uniquely, the facecare products used are not well-known brand facecare products, but new brand products that are popularized by TikTok. Meanwhile, they use trial and error method to find a product that suits their skin. Information and references from TikTok are taken into consideration in choosing facecare products. Female students use social media TikTok as a source of information for facecare because TikTok provides facecare content, because TikTok has reviews of facecare products, and because of peer influence. It is argued in this article that even though TikTok has become a source of information for facecare, the selection of facecare products is highly dependent on the compatibility of one's facial skin.

Abstract

Instagram is a popular photo and video-based social media platform in Indonesia. At first, the photos and videos uploaded were simple. But now, Instagram users are starting to pay attention to quality; they are even willing to spend money and time to make an ideal upload. An ideal post, such as showing happiness or one that is exclusive in terms of both financial and personal achievement. Nowadays, this behavior has became known as flexing. Flexing then mushroomed not only among upper and middle class, but also lower class. This article explores this flexing behavior. This study was conducted on Instagram as this social media platform that first popularized flexing, and there are still many flexing actors on Instagram. This study was conducted between September and December 2022, involving 13 informants, who vary according to sex (7 women and 6 men), age (between 19 and 24 years), and status (six flexing agents, four followers, and three flexing agents as well as followers). Interview and observation were combined as data collection methods. While the former was carried out through face-to-face interview and online interview using Zoom application and Instagram direct messages; the latter was conducted by observing their Instagram accounts. The study indicates that even though flexing, by definition is related to showing off wealth, the research finding indicates that it also includes one’s achievement (i.e. one’s performance, ideal body, expertise). Those who do flexing suggest that Instagram is one’s personal property and they have the right to upload whatever they want. Based on this, the reasons for doing flexing vary, ranging from self-appreciation and appreciated by other, to archive something they have or achieve, and personal branding. Flexing has both positive and negative impacts on the person doing it and on other people. The positive impacts on flexing actors are self-motivation, making new friends, and opening up job opportunities. The positive impacts on others are motivation, and sources of information. Meanwhile, The negative impacts of Flexing for actors are that they become more wasteful and spend a lot of time. The negative impacts on others, it creates a feeling of insecurity and pressure because they compare themselves with others.
