Abstract

This article examines the representation of Indonesian athletes with disabilities in a photo essay documenting their intensive training for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. This study analyses the messages in a series of photo essays by Mohammad Ayudha, a photojournalist from the national news agency, Antara Foto. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, to interpret the denotative, connotation, and mythical meaning in the photo essay. The findings reveal that, through his photo story sequence, photojournalist Mohammad Ayudha visualized the fighting spirit of Indonesian athletes with disabilities. Out of the thirteen photographic series, six images illustrate Roland Barthes' theory of the three stages of semiotics. These stages are designated as denotation, connotation, and myth. This study examines how photography of national athletes with disabilities during training sessions represents nationalism and determination before the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, using Roland Barthes' three semiotic stages. The Photojournalist intends to create a photograph that conveys a message to the public that physical limitations are not an obstacle in achieving success in the field of international sports, and is expected to help eliminate negative stigma against the disabled community.

Abstract

An aging population is a global demographic trend that creates social problems. Whether they live with family members or apart from them, elderly individuals often experience potential conflict in intergenerational communication. This research aims to find out the family communication patterns of the elderly in their communication with children, in-laws, and grandchildren. The Revised Family Communication Pattern Instrument (Parent Version) or RFCP-PV was used to measure family communication patterns that link conversation orientation and conformity orientation. This study used quantitative descriptive methods on 94 elderly people in Bandung City. This elderly group consists of Seroja Cinambo Elderly, Bahagia Antapani Elderly, Sibulan Sukajadi Elderly, and Sicetar Ujung Berung Elderly. The elderly who were used as respondents were elderly people who were under the auspices of Indonesia Friendly Elderly (IRL), West Java. The elderly were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding family communication patterns and provide an overview of variations in their communication with their families. The results indicate diverse patterns in how elderly individuals communicate with their children, in-laws, and grandchildren, particularly regarding their orientation toward conversation and conformity.

Abstract

This research investigates the dissemination of hoax content related to the 2024 Indonesian General Election (#Pemilu2024) on TikTok, highlighting the platform's role in the spread of disinformation. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a literature review with primary data collected from TikTok via web scraping and secondary data sourced from Turnbackhoaks.id and media reports. Content and message analysis, along with Naïve Bayes classification, were employed to investigate the types of hoaxes, their dissemination patterns, and audience responses. Data triangulation ensured validity and reliability. Findings revealed a concerning prevalence of political hoaxes, including black campaigns and attempts to manipulate public opinion, rapidly spread by TikTok's short-form video format. The Naïve Bayes method classified comments on #Pemilu2024 TikTok videos with an accuracy rate of 87.37%. After preprocessing, 414 comments were analyzed, comprising 127 negative, 237 positive, and 50 neutral comments. The Naïve Bayes method effectively predicts sentiment in TikTok comments related to #Pemilu2024. The analysis reveals that social media videos can easily influence the Indonesian people without verifying information on official websites.

Abstract

Political dynasties have emerged as a significant concern in Indonesian politics, particularly in the context of the 2024 presidential election. This study aims to analyze the representation of political dynasties in editorial cartoons published by the Kompas daily newspaper during the 2024 Presidential Election period. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, this study examines four editorial cartoons published between October 19, 2023, and February 10, 2024, focusing on their denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The results show that the cartoons represent power and dominance through the manipulation of visual size, contain criticism of the political system through various symbols such as tornadoes and the Constitutional Court building wrapped in an octopus, and depict society through various crowd expressions that reflect Indonesian pluralism. The research findings identify three main myths: the myth of power and political elites that reflects the Javanese cultural concept of centralized authority; myths related to money politics that represent the influence of economic power; and the myth of democracy without people that highlights low party identification among voters. This study demonstrates how editorial cartoons use symbolism, exaggeration, distortion, stereotypes, caricatures, and humor to deliver sharp political criticism. This research contributes to understanding how editorial cartoons function as an effective medium for social criticism by visually representing important issues in the Indonesian democratic process, inviting readers to reflect on the challenges of democracy while encouraging improvements toward a more substantive political system.

Abstract

Over the past decade, the United States has experienced a significant and consistent increase in the number of individuals identifying as transgender. According to data from 2013, approximately 3.5% of Americans identified as transgender, whereas by 2022, this figure had risen to 7.2%, representing an estimated 20 million individuals. The U.S. government has implemented a series of policies that restrict the rights of transgender groups, as depicted in media coverage. This research aims to analyze the framing differences in news articles regarding restrictions on the rights of transgender groups following Executive Orders No. 14168, 14173, 14183, and 14201. Moreover, this study draws on data from Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya by analyzing three news articles from each outlet, employing Robert M. Entman's framing analysis. The study found that Al Jazeera emphasized the social aspect of the issue and advocated for the protection of vulnerable groups. In contrast, Al Arabiya framed the issue from a more sociological perspective, critically addressing topics that diverge from dominant traditional norms, particularly those related to politeness and the efficiency of public institutions. This framing reflects Al Arabiya's comparatively conservative orientation, characterized by its critique of gender ideology. The different analysis results show that the way each media form frames is based on its cultural and ideological orientation.
