Abstract

This paper addresses ethical issues and the challenges of insecurity in connection to mass media and journalistic practice in the context of Africa. In communication studies, ethics is central and critical to the issue of insecurity in Africa, especially to the credibility in the gathering, processing, and delivery of information for believability. Insecurity constitutes a major impediment to the development of Africa. There are multiple points of violent conflicts, acts of terrorism, kidnapping, and crimes. Many countries in Africa are faced with threats ranging from armed banditry, cattle rustling, armed and sea robberies and piracy, militancy, cultism, pipeline vandalism, illegal oil bunkering, and crude oil theft, illegal refining of petroleum, herdsmen-farmers clashes, activities of IPOB and other separatist groups. All of these make society tense, dangerous, and conflict-ridden with implications on journalism, its ethical practice, performance, and credibility. For an individual or people to internalize, accept, believe and actualize the content of information, such an individual or people must adjudge the source and content of the information based on truthfulness, competence, dynamism, and relevance. Often time, the challenges of insecurity in Africa are accelerated due to the way media handle such issues. When an individual is sufficiently and ethically informed, he or she becomes knowledgeable on a particular subject and the mind is freed from uncertainty, liberated from ignorance, and empowered to effectively participate in the process of national development. The growth and development of Africa have continuously failed to correlate with the quantum of resources allegedly expanded over time. Within this context, this paper examines ethics in journalistic engagement and the issues of insecurity in Africa.

Abstract

This study examined the newspaper coverage of the Ombatse crisis that hit Nasarawa State from 2012-2015. The Ombatse was a movement that wanted to resurrect the Eggon culture in a kind of renaissance and ensure a culture of high morality and chastity; laudable as these objectives were, the group suddenly turned dreadful, assuming a more militant posture; attacking and killing enemies real or perceived including security forces in their hundred. The study employed content analysis, which is a quantitative method of data generation. It applied four predetermined frames: actor frame, action frame, reaction frame, and consequence frame. 2112 dailies were censured for the period of four years. Study applied purposive sampling technique in the selection of the Daily Trust and Leadership newspapers where 180 copies of the papers were examined. The found that reaction frame was the predominant slant of the Nigerian newspapers with 61.1% of the news stories as reactions to the Ombatse activities. By implication, the findings revealed vacuity of the Nigerian media in handling a core national issue to which the media itself is a stakeholder. The study recommended that the media must be active participant in addressing, shaping public understanding of social upheaval- because the role of the media during conflict cannot be underestimated. The media should be able to analyse consequences, the possibility of collateral damage on the parties involved, the shadow parties and the by-standers. Nigerian journalists should also be trained and retrained on guide to sensitive-conflict reporting.

Abstract

The Pedagogical shift to learner-centered instructions entails that teachers need to have pre-requisite skills which will enable them to navigate the teaching and learning process efficiently by enabling them to serve as facilitators of curriculum content in Social Studies. This study examined Resources for Social Studies: info graphics illustrations and their effects on students' achievement. The research design for this study was quasi-experimental. The population of the students consisted of all Social Studies school pupils within Jos-South Local Government Area of Plateau State through random sampling technique 34 (n = 17) students were sampled for the study within the experimental and control groups, Data was collected using the instrument titled “Social Studies Students Achievement Test” (SSSAT) that was content and faced validated to determine its internal consistency while for reliability the test- and retest using alpha conbrach 0.66 and 0.70 was attained respectively. The treatment group was taught using info graphics and Jigsaw stimulated games whereas the control class group was taught using the conventional teaching methods. The research null hypotheses were tested using parametric t-test statistics at the confidence level of 0.05%. The findings of the study showed that there is a significant difference between the experimental and control group with the Tstat 3.30 >Tcrit 2.05 indicating a strong significant difference between the sampled groups, there is no significant difference in the post-test mean scores of male and female students in the experimental group with the Tstat 1.53 < Tcrit 2.14 indicating poor significant difference, there is no significant difference between the mean scores of studies who identified as visual learners and those who are not with the Tstat 0.29 < Tcrit 2.44 indicating a low significant difference between the sampled groups. The study recommended that; specialize in digital content creation by teachers, school administrators encouragement for improvisation of instructional resources, autonomy for teaching in selecting resource materials, considerable budgetary allocation to schools by Federal Government to equip their resource rooms.

Abstract

Businesses have come to the realization that customers of today especially the millenials are actively engaged over the internet and to give them place utility, they need to engage them digitally. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of selected digital marketing tactics and their influence on the purchasing behavior of Nigerian Millenials. Research was conducted using cross-sectional survey design with data collected using close ended questionnaires designed with 5-point Likert scale questions. The study’s population comprised active internet subscribers in FCT within the millennial age group, and a sample size of 400 was arrived at using Taro Yamani’s formula. Linear regression analysis was used to test all three hypotheses, and results showed that all two selected digital marketing tactics (social media marketing and search engine optimization) have positive influence on purchasing behavior of Nigerian Millenials. Thus, it was concluded that increased use of digital marketing tactics would positively affect the purchasing behavior of Nigerian Millenials.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between researchers' self-efficacy and their commitment to duties in universities in Anambra State, Nigeria. The research aims to investigate the extent to which self-efficacy influences researchers' commitment levels and identify the implications for academic institutions. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected through a questionnaire administered to lecturers in federal and state universities in Anambra State. The sample size consisted of 200 lecturers selected via simple random sampling. The questionnaire items were designed to measure self-efficacy and commitment to duties using a Likert scale. The data were analyzed using bivariate correlational analyses, specifically Pearson product moment correlations. The study revealed a negative linear relationship between researchers' self-efficacy and their commitment to duties, indicating that lower self-efficacy levels corresponded to diminished commitment. These findings highlight the importance of supporting researchers' self-efficacy through training, mentorship, and resource provision. Recommendations include enhancing self-efficacy development programs, fostering a positive research culture, providing adequate resources and support, implementing mentoring initiatives, and promoting research collaborations. By implementing these recommendations, universities in Anambra State can foster a culture of commitment and excellence among researchers, thereby enhancing productivity and contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the academic community.
