Abstract

Despite several studies on speaking skills in the EFL context, little attention has been attracted to investigating the effectiveness of the talking stick method on speaking skills. This study examines the effectiveness of the talking stick method in improving students' speaking skills at MA Uswatun Hasanah. The study used quantitative methods and interviews to gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of this method in classroom learning. The study used a simple random sampling technique and a one-group pre-test and post-test design. This study uses subjective tests in the form of read-aloud tests as an instrument to take pretest and posttest data. Likewise, the data collection methods used are observation, interviews to strengthen the data obtained from subjective tests. The mean post-test score (49.83) was higher than the pre-test score (42.87), indicating that the talking stick technique had a positive impact on the speaking ability of students at MA Uswatun Hasanah in the 2023–2024 academic year. The results showed that the talking stick technique had a significant positive impact on the speaking ability of students at MA Uswatun Hasanah.

Abstract

Sonaf Tunbaba is a house for the King while it becomes the centre for the continuity of all cultural activities including the customs of the Tunbaba community. The culture of the Tunbaba community is reflected through symbols or signs as differentiating meanings used in everyday life. As a differentiator of meaning, Sonaf Tunbaba is rich in cultural symbols that are meaningful and need to be known by all levels of society. The symbols on Sonaf Tunbaba are suspected to have a correlation with the symbol of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). The main problem discussed in this study was how to express cultural semiotics in Sonaf Tunbaba. This study was carried out to determine and describe the meaning of cultural symbols contained in Sonaf Tunbaba. The researchers applied a descriptive qualitative method in this study. This study took cultural symbols on Sonaf Tunbaba as the object of this study. Sources of data were in form of primary and secondary data. The primary data were taken from Sonaf Tunbaba, while the secondary data were in form of interview’s result with informant. The data were analysed using semiotics theory. The result reflected that there were ten symbols found inside and outside the sonaf. Outside the sonaf, there were two symbols, namely an inscription monument and an offering altar. Inside the sonaf, there were eight symbols, namely terrace pillars with human face pictures, hangers, main pillars of the sonaf, a king’s pillar, an empress’ pillar, a storeyed altar, and a tribute.

Abstract

Curriculum plays an important role in education, including English education. On the other side, motivation is also important for the students when learning English. During the implementation of the Merdeka curriculum, there were many obstacles that made students less motivated to learn. This research aims to figure out the correlation between students’ perceptions of the Merdeka curriculum and their motivation to learn English. The findings of this research revealed that the correlation coefficient between the two variables was 0.193. It means that there was a very low positive correlation between the students’ perception of the Merdeka curriculum and their motivation to learn English. The perception of the students could be influenced by several factors, such as how a person articulates their understanding of the subject. On the other side, motivation is also influenced by several factors, such as individual needs and desires (the input dimension), the expertise and demeanor of teachers, and the obstacles teachers encounter in school-based assessments (the process dimension).
