This paper presents a new switching method for Cascaded Multilevel Inverter (CMI). The new method uses multiple non-sinusoidal signals as the modulating signal. The main advantage of using non-sinusoidal modulating signal is that it provides higher fundamental component but at the cost of having a numbers of low-order harmonics in its unfiltered output voltage; naturally contributed by the non-sinusoidal modulating signal. In this paper, the Trapezoidal waveform is employed as the non-sinusoidal modulating signal for the CMI. Its harmonics profile of different slope angles is analysed. From the analysis, it was found that the trapezoidal with the slope angle of 36o eliminates the third and fifth harmonics yet yields a high fundamental magnitude. To verify, a single-phase CMI prototype is constructed and an ALTERA FPGA is deployed to implement the proposed method’s algorithm. From the results, it was shown that analysis is validated DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i4.855

With the acceleration of urbanization and the rapid growth of private cars, the traffic congestion is increasingly becoming a “chronic illness” for urban development. This paper describes what exactly the real-time and dynamic urban traffic information service systemis. Furthermore, the pieces of technology needed and the benefits of the system will be discussed. Finally, we conclude with issues and problems that to be resolved in order to have a fully functional system. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i4.871

Oxy-fuel combustion is recognizing one of the most promising available technologies that zero emission accomplishment may be in the offing. With coal burned under the pressure of 6MPa and oxygen-enriched conditions, the high temperature and high pressure gaseous combustion product is composed of 95% CO2 and water-vapor, with the rest of O2, N2 and so on. However, once lauded as classic approach of resolving fuel gas enthalpy calculation pertaining to ideal gas at atmospheric pressure was restrained by pressure limitations. In this paper, the flue gas was assumed by an ideal mixture of four real gases system, and the equations for calculating the flue gas enthalpy were derived by using the cofunction method incorporating with the Dalton’s law of pressure summation based on the Virial equation. Consequently, the results showed that the calculation method on the basis of the Dalton’s law of pressure summation appears to be a reasonable enthalpy values for the 6MPa oxygen-enriched coal combustion as opposed to the inferior cofunction method. During the nondestructive testing for metal bumper bar system, it is a critical problem that it cannot identify the reflected wave. Based on the guided-wave inspiration and through studying lots of simulations, this paper systematically analyses the states of quality test for metal bumper bar system in the following four aspects respectively: area inspired by guided-wave, time inspired by guided-wave, head-wave width inspired by guided-wave and rate inspired by guided-wave. The paper also resolves completely the critical problem and completes the subject of quality test. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i4.866

Recognizing the traffic signs installed on the streets is one of the requirements of driving on the road. Laxity in driving may result in traffic accident. This paper describes a real-time reminder model, by utilizing a camera that can be installed in a car to capture image of traffic signs, and is processed and later to inform the driver. The extracting feature harnessing the morphological elements (strel) is used in this paper. Artificial Neural Networks is used to train the system and to produce a final decision. The result shows that the accuracy in detecting and recognizing the ten types of traffic signs in real-time is 80%. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i4.861

In this paper, the underlying control network was built up in view of the actual operation of heating network through applying the intelligent nodes based on CAN bus, and the data acquisition and control functions were completed to realize the local intelligent control, then adapt the change of outdoor temperature and the operating condition of heating network, and achieve the unattended purpose ultimately. The seamless connection between the underlying control network (CAN network) and the upper management network (Internet) was implemented by using embedded network gateway and reliable VPN technology, the operating parameters of the heat exchange stations can be remote monitored in real-time. the function configuration of the underlying intelligent nodes were achieved combines with the needs of the industrial field to realize the automatic control of the thermal parameters, software framework was put up based on FIX monitoring software to complete the module design such as graphical interface, real-time database, history data trends and reports design etc. The system has the characters such as great flexibility, simple human-machine interface, stable and reliable in practical application, which has broad applicability and be worth popularizing. The in-phase and quadrature modulator (IQ modulator) is a key component in modern wireless transmitter. It provides a convenient method for modulating data bits or symbols onto an RF carrier. It has become the architecture of choice for implementing transmitter signal chains for end applications such as cellular, WiMAX, and wireless point-to-point. However, there are several non-ideal aspects of analog IQ modulator, include IQ gain imbalance, imperfect quadrature, and LO leakage. These imperfections will result in image spectral and degrade MER of the modulator, which in turn degrades bit error rate (BER). Gain matching and phase compensation both affect the total amount of image rejection. Factory calibration can detect the IQ gain and phase mismatch in different frequency and store the correction coefficients in nonvolatile memory. The key issue is how to get the exact mismatch. In this paper, a mathematical model of IQ modulator was established and an analytic solution is obtained about how to get the exact mismatch parameters. In this paper, an improved bacterial foraging algorithm (IBFA) is employed to solve economic-emission dispatch (EED) problem. Regarding to more interest to renewable energy sources especially wind energy in recent years, it is necessary to use of incorporate wind power plants into EED problem. To consider realistic conditions, EED is included bi-objective of cost and NOx emission. The problems encountered with BFA are ineffective bacteria elimination resulted in poor performance. To overcome this, a modified BFA is proposed in reproduction step. EED is performed both with and without wind power plant subjected to couple of constraints using proposed approach and investigated from stand point of cost generation, and grid losses. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the proposed algorithm. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i4.851

Angle of arrival (AOA) is able to achieve high accuracy when the antenna arrays are deployed much closer to the emitter. However, spatial resolution problem still exists. This paper presents a novel AOA estimation method called sparsity angle sensing (SAS) to improve the resolution. It integrates compressive sensing theorem into the parameter estimation formula. Traditional approaches for AOA estimation such as beamforming (BF), minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR), multiple signal classification (MUSIC) are compared with SAS, and simulation results are discussed. It is shown that SAS method outperforms the other three methods in spatial resolution and robustness. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i4.867
