Abstract

Urbanization is continuing around the world accompanied by a constantly growing demand for energy. For these reasons, new and efficient solutions for power transmission are required. To cope with these new challenges a novel SVC PLUS (Static Var Compensation SVC) for Reactive Power Compensation is designed and researched. SVC PLUS is an advanced STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) with Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) technology, also called (M-STATCOM). In this paper the M-STATCOM is simulated in PSCAD environment with 100 sub-modules per phase. Its static and dynamic characteristics are discussed. After compare and contrast different modulation schemes, harmonic contents in Level-shift sine pulse width modulation (LS-PWM) are found having least total harmonic distortions (THD) and with this modulation scheme converter can achieve more levels so it is found feasible to control the converter. The behaviour of circulating current with least ripples is also observed. In this paper, the traditional capacitor balance strategy is also modified. The viability of the MMCs as well as the effectiveness of the LS-PWM control method is confirmed by simulation. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.6821

Abstract

This article presents a development of a fuzzy based nominal characteristic trajectory following (NCTF) controller for continuous motion control. A new structure is proposed in order to achieve excellent performance of tracking to a continuous reference input and also for point-to-point positioning task. The proposed structure maintains the NCTF controller simple configuration which is composed of a nominal characteristic trajectory (NCT) and a compensator. The compensator is based on a Mamdani type fuzzy controller. Its membership functions are designed according to the available information provided by NCT and the hardware specification. Controller performance was evaluated through simulation by comparing it with the existing method previously proposed for the fuzzy based NCTF controller. The tracking performance was evaluated by measuring responses of the system providing continuous sinusoidal signal input. The result indicates that substantial improvement is achieved in tracking of continuous reference inputs. Moreover, a better result is also obtained in performing point-to-point positioning task.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.7008

Abstract

In order to make controllable reactor of transformer type (CRT) working of safety, reliable and compensation effect is obvious, the principle of “high impedance, weak coupling” must be satisfied in the design of CRT structure. The magnetic integration technology used in the design of the ontology of CRT in this paper, a decoupling integrated core structure is proposed. This paper also calculates the leakage reactance and current of decoupling structure. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.6724

Abstract

Yoruba as a language has passed through generation reformations making some of the old documents in the archive to be unreadable by the present readers. Apart from this, some Yoruba writers usually mixed English numerals while writing due to brevity and conciseness of English numerals compare to Yoruba numerals which are combination of several characters. Re-typing such historical documents may be time consuming, therefore a need for an efficient Optical Character Reader (OCR) which will not only  effectively recognize Yoruba texts but also converts all the English numerals in the document to Yoruba numerals.Several Optical Character Reader (OCR) systems had been developed to recognize characters or texts of some languages such as English, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, however, despite the significant contribution of Yoruba language to historical documentation and communication, it was observed that there is no particular OCR system for the language. In this paper correlation and template matching techniques were used to develop an OCR for the recognition of Yoruba based texts and convert English numerals in the document to Yoruba numerals. Experimental results show the relatively high accuracy of the developed OCR when it was tested on all size Yoruba alphabets and numerals. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.6782

Abstract

This paper presents the overall review of torque ripple reduction techniques in brushless DC motors (BLDC) and different multilevel inverter topologies suitable for BLDC motor drives. BLDC motors are widely used for household applications due to its features of high reliability, simple frame, high efficiency, fast dynamic response, compact size and low maintenance, etc.. The switches are electronically commutated based on the information of rotor position detection. The position of the rotor is determined with the help of the sensor or sensorless techniques. Hence it is an electronically commutated motor. Because of this commutation, the ripples are generated in the electromagnetic torque and the power factor of AC mains gets affected. So, in order to improve the performance of these motors the ripple in the electromagnetic torque could be reduced and the power factor of the AC mains should be increased. An enormous review of different torque ripple reduction techniques and different multilevel inverter topologies suitable for torque ripple minimization and power quality improvement with different converter topologies are discussed. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.6904

Abstract

One of the major problems in adaptive filtering is the problem of system identification. It has been studied extensively due to its immense practical importance in a variety of fields. The underlying goal is to identify the impulse response of an unknown system. This is accomplished by placing a known system in parallel and feeding both systems with the same input. Due to initial disparity in their impulse responses, an error is generated between their outputs. This error is set to tune the impulse response of known system in a way that every change in impulse response reduces the magnitude of prospective error. This process is repeated until the error becomes negligible and the responses of both systems match. To specifically minimize the error, numerous adaptive algorithms are available. They are noteworthy either for their low computational complexity or high convergence speed. Recently, a method, known as Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), has gained much attention due to its remarkably low computational complexity. But despite this colossal advantage, properties of MCMC method have not been investigated for adaptive system identification problem. This article bridges this gap by providing a complete treatment of MCMC method in the aforementioned context. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.6925

Abstract

Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC) is the main component in a VSC-based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system. In addition to the characteristic harmonics, the inter-harmonics could be originated from the characteristic of each converter working at different modulation frequencies, or from a distorting frequency on one or both ac (or dc) systems. The space vector representation of VSC’s switching functions is used as a tool for analyzing and giving the understanding how the inter-harmonics appear. Based on the methodological analysis, simulation models were built and implemented using SimPowerSystems in MATLAB for cases. The simulation results show that, a series of inter-harmonics is produced tend to be dominant in low-frequency range, especially the negative-sequence inter-harmonics which have lower frequencies than the fundamental. This elaborate understanding of VSC-based HVDC system’s inter-harmonic characteristic could be beneficial to harmonic measurement and mitigation control. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.6809

Abstract

This paper explain the creation of a Matlab-Simulink model for a tidal current turbine system through the modeling of the source, the rotor, drive train and the generator. The aim of the simulation model is to illustrate how the tidal current energy system works and how to make use of it in power generation. Harnessing tidal currents power done through various types of water current turbines. Owing to its advantages in producing power from tidal currents, OpenHydro tidal current turbine will be used in this work. With its Permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) that is suitable for low tidal current speeds and no need for gearbox. The rotational motion of the turbine rotor is transferred to the electrical generator by means of a mechanical transmission system called drive train. MATLAB/SIMULINK interface has been examined and the maximum electrical power extraction within the allowable range of tidal currents can be achieved if the controller can properly follow the optimum curve with any water current speed change. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i1.7017
