Abstract

Telco operators need to tailor their networks to be agile, efficient and able manage the operational cost at moderate level. Furthermore, the norm of network volatility practiced by many enterprises open to a new challenge in managing an increasing traffic over the same WAN. For an enterprise, turning toward Bandwidth-on-Demand (BoD) approach promises to deliver extra network capacity when in demand without the complexity of running separate network. However, they need to manually transform these high-level policies into low-level configuration command and thus error-prone. This study was to address the effects of SDN (software-defined network) on the BoD performance towards the differences between the reactive and intent forwarding based on the assessment matrix. The testbed was performed under Mininet simulator which interacted with ONOS (Open Network Operating System). Mesh type topology with a predetermine parameter matrix was used using random topology generator. The expected outcome from this research was to show the effect on the BoD performance under two type of forwarding; reactive and intent based on the assessment matrix. This report contributed towards determining the effectiveness of SDN architecture on BoD performance and to improve future benchmarking on SDN-BoD testbed.

Abstract

The number of digital medical documents is increasing continuously; several medical websites share a lot of unclassified articles. These articles have very long texts that should be read to determine the topic of each document. The classification of these documents is important so researchers can use these documents easily and the effort and time in reading and searching for a specific topic will be reduced. Therefore, an automatic way to extract latent topics from these text documents is needed. Topic modeling is one of the techniques used to deal with this problem. In this paper, a medical collection of documents is used; this collection contains documents from three types of widespread diseases (Heart Diseases, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol). LDA topic modeling technique is applied to classify these documents into the previous mentioned topics. An evaluation of the algorithm’s results is done and the LDA shows a good level of classification accuracy.

Abstract

The significance of power or energy measurement has been very acute in recent times with the increase of Grid-Tied Solar PV system that needs Net-Metering. Power can be flown in both directions, from grid to load or from load (PV- Panel) to grid line. If power flow from both side is not calculated and surplus power which is not being used at the time instant is not stored, accurate billing is not possible. That is why a bidirectional power meter is required which can measure both the positive and negative power at any instant. The aim of this paper is to develop a bidirectional power meter using microcontroller. The work of this paper constitutes a microcontroller, a current sensor, bulbs as load and a display. The rms values of voltage and current is determined and showed in the display. Then the calibration is done inside the developed program. After that the power is calculated and showed in the display. Then the direction of the power is determined depending on the direction (whether positive or negative) of the power which is also dependent on the phase difference between the voltage and current. If there is no phase difference between the voltage and current, then the power is positive and leaving from the grid. If there is 180 degree phase difference between the voltage and current, then the power is negative and entering to the grid. The direction of the power flow is very important for efficiently of the proposed meter. For some defined load the accuracy of the developed meter is calculated as 94%.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new optimal scheduling methodology for a Microgrid (MG) considering the energy resources such as diesel generators, solar photovoltaic (PV) plants, wind farms, battery energy storage systems (BESSs), electric vehicles (EVs) and demand response (DR). The penetration level of renewable and sustainable energy resources (i.e., wind, solar PV energy, geothermal and ocean energy) in power generation systems is increasing. In this work, the EVs and storage are used as flexible DR sources and they can be combined with DR to improve the flexibility of MG. Various uncertainties exist in the MGs due to the intermittent/uncertain nature of renewable energy resources (RERs) such as wind and solar PV power outputs. In this paper, these uncertainties are modeled by using the probability analysis. In this paper, the optimal scheduling problem of MG is solved by minimizing the total operating cost (TOC) of MG. The TOC minimization objective is formulated by considering the cost due to power exchange between main grid and MG, diesel generators, wind, solar PV units, EVs, BESSs, and DR. The successful implementation of optimal scheduling of MG requires the widespread use of demand response and EVs. In this paper, teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm is used to solve the proposed optimization problem. The simulation studies are performed on a test MG by considering all the components of MG.

Abstract

This study has outlined the Z resonator shaped with Brewster crystal in the presence of flat mirror for measuring the standing wave ratio. Stability parameter and beam radius are simulated versus thickness, refractive index of the crystal and first and second folding ranges. Beam radius variations are studied against phase angle and curvature radius of spherical mirror in T and S planes. Intermode beat frequency of the system is 216.276 MHz and total cavity length is 693.078 mm. It is important the standing wave ratio is dependent on stability parameter and beam radius variations.

Abstract

A partial discharge described as anon-linear electrical break-down even that happened in a section of insulating area between two conduct which are at different potentials the damage of the insulating material, these conductors have a different insulating material potential of damage, under AC voltage discharge interval process. In this paper, we propose a Matlab /Simulation software. A detailed analysis of the partial discharge (PD) signal in the underground electric power conductor performed for monitoring, and investigation of numerous effects associated with the partial discharge event, such as heat ,phonic and electrical. Thus, to gain the important data of the insulating material status.

Abstract

Visually disabled people rely on the sense of touch and sense of hearing to help them recognise anything in their everyday life. Colours, however, is also important in giving information about things such as the colour of cash note (blue, green, red, orange and purple), the colour of spices (yellow turmeric, red chilli, green chilli) and colour of cloth. Without a sense of visual, they are not able to recognise colour and perceive the beauty of colour. This study was conducted to develop a colour recognizer for visually ‎disabled people‎. Colour recogniser used the colour sensor to sense the colour, microcontroller to recognise the colour and notify the user using a speech generator and speaker. The device is powered by dry cell batteries and designed to be user-friendly, practical and portable. The testing is done to show that this device was able to sense and differentiate 12 primary colours in the RGB colour wheel and validated the accuracy of this devices.

Abstract

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) and Nonlinear Autoregressive Neural Network with External Input (NARX) are recently applied in predicting energy consumption. Energy consumption prediction for depth analysis of how electrical energy consumption is managed on Tower 2 Engineering Building is critical in order to reduce the energy usage and the operational cost. Prediction of energy consumption in this building will bring great benefits to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering UiTM Shah Alam. In this work, we present the comparative study on the performance of prediction of energy consumption in Tower 2 Engineering Building using RNN and NARX method. The model of RNN and NARX are trained using data collected using smart meters installed inside the building. The results after training and testing using RNN and NARX show that by using the recorded data we can accurately predict the energy consumption in the building. We also show that RNN model trained with normalized data performs better than NARX model.

Abstract

Today, deployment of optical fiber has offered large transmission capacity which cannot be efficiently utilized by the electronic switches. Rather, Integrated Hybrid Optical Network (IHON) is a promising approach which combines both packet and circuit switching techniques. As a result, it achieves efficient utilization of the bulk capacity and guarantees absolute Quality of Service (QoS) by optimizing the advantages of the two switching schemes while diminishing their disadvantages. Transpacket has developed a Fusion node implementing IHON principles in Ethernet for the data plane. Hence, this paper investigates and evaluates IHON network for 5G access networks. The simulated results and numerical analysis confirm that the Packet Delay Variation (PDV), Delay and Packet Loss Ratio (PLR) of Guaranteed Service Transport. (GST) traffic in IHON network met the requirements of 5G mobile fronthaul using CPRI. The number of nodes in the network limits the maximum separation distance between Base Band Unit. (BBU) and Remote Radio Head (RRH), link length; for increasing the number of nodes, the link length decreases. In addition to this, we verified how the leftover capacity of fusion node can be used to carry the low priority packets and how the GST traffic can have deterministic characteristics on a single wavelength by delaying it with Fixed Delay Line (FDL). For example, for LSM1GE=0.3 the added Statistical Multiplexing (SM) traffic increases the 10GE wavelength utilization up to 89% without any losses and with SM PLR=1E−03 up to 92% utilization.

Abstract

The tremendous development and sensational popularity  of smart mobile devices that offer remarkable availability of seamless  and uninterrupted  communication services at anytime, anywhere,  to any content as well as any prospects represent a new cohort of technological tools that could be utilized for inculcating creative skills in young children. Now a days many companies are  manufacturing lot of apps that target children education and entertainment. Both the Parents and educators find a huge responsibility in evaluating and  selecting such devices and decide which of these offer potential educational benefits for their children. This decision is critical to them since they  restricted tools to evaluate the applications available in the market. Hence the development of an  interactive and multisensory component based mobile application environment with integrated physical and virtual reality scenario could solve the issue related to the children education and entertainment. This is not just  limited to education and the entertainment domain but will explore essential features of virtual reality environment and interactivity. Children with special education needs find it difficult to understand  new knowledge and concept but by the use of virtual reality worlds produced for children could enhance their level of understanding. Therefore this paper dscusses the development of  adaptable, customizable and virtual reality based compliant applications for children. These applications would be useful to enhance learning essentials and improve  diverse sensory and cognitive impairments in even children with special needs by resolving  mobility issues. This application could be made available on i-pads, tablets, etc  and will be intelligent to perform switch between the different intellectual ranges of children accessing it. In other words it will present self-adaptability feature. This research study also focuses on the activities that are suitable for learning purposes with students with impairments.
