Abstract

Productivity of Corn (Zea mays L.) at Various Levels of Shading inCoconut Field (Cocos nucifera L.)Coconut cultivation in monoculture had problems in field production, processing and marketing that can cause low coconut farmers income. Therefore we need coconut farm diversification by increasing the potential of land among the coconut trees. Area of land that used coconut palm is only about 20% so that the remaining land that can be used for other commodities is 80%. One of the plants can be cultivated among the coconut is corn. Land use among the coconut palm is expected to increase corn production because corn is one of the leading food commodities and the potential in Indonesia. The objective of this study to determine the productivity of corn plants at different levels of shade by coconut palm. The research was conducted at the experimental Garden Kima Atas, Indonesia Coconut and Other Palm Research Institute (ICOPRI), North Sulawesi. This research was conducted from June to November 2007. The results showed that an increase in production of plant dry weight in treatment D (corn planted in open areas) is higher than treatment A (corn grown in between coconut palm old), B (corn grown inbetween coconut palm 20 years old) and C (corn grown in between coconut palm 50 years old).

Abstract

High Yielding Coconut Tall Varieties Specific for Gorontalo The major constraint for coconut development program in Indonesia, including Gorontalo Province is the lower crop productivity i.e merely 1 ton copra/ha/year. Increased coconut production and productivity must be done hand in hand with coconut replanting program. To support the program, the use of high quality planting material is required. There are two options available in this matter. First, by utilizing the available coconut tall high yielding varieties suitable for agroclimate similar to Gorontalo (dry climate). Second, or most preferably, utilizing the high yielding local tall coconut cultivars. Preliminary evaluation by local estate officer indicated that there are some local coconut tall cultivars (ca. 4 cultivars) that had both high yield and oil content. This research was therefore aimed at further assessing these four promising local cultivars. Evaluation was done on those pre-determined populations in two phases, for three years consecutively, from 2006 to 2008. Parameter observed include morphological, yield of copra and its components, physiological and chemical characters as well as field resistance to pest. Results of evaluation, conducted by the ICOPRI and Dishutbun Gorontalo, confirmed that two cultivars, namely, Kelapa Dalam Molowahu (DMU) and kelapa Dalam Kramat (DKT) could be considered as two high yielding cocconut tall cultivars specific for Gorontalo. These two cultivars exhibited high productivity (above 3 ton copra/ha/year) and possess high oil content (above 64%). These cultivars have formally been released as new varieties by Minister of Agriculture in Desember 2009, to be used for high quality planting material for coconut development program in Gorontalo.

Abstract

Utilization of Crude Enzyme Extracts, Papain and Bromelain in Starter Oil Making and Its Effects to the Quality of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) During StorageResearch was conducted in 2006 at The Indonesian Coconut and Other Palm Research Institute, and at the Institute for Research and Standardization of Trade and Industry, Manado North Sulawesi. Initially starter oil was prepared using two natural enzymes. The research onprocessing VCO using the starter oil with low concentration of crude enzymes was taken place. Research was done in factorial experiment 2 x 4 x 3, using Completely Randomized Design with three replicate. There were 24 units of the experiment. Factor A crude extract of natural enzymes, consists of: A1) crude enzyme extract of papaya fruit peel and, A2) crude enzyme of pineapple fruit extract; Factor B, duration storage, consists of: B1) 0 month, B2) 1 month, B3), 2 months and B4) 3 months. Variables observed consisted of: Rendemen, water content, free fatty acid content, peroxide value and fatty acid profile. The results showed that rendemen of starter oil using crude enzyme papain at concentration of 10-30% ranged 26.10-28.27%. Water content of VCO without storage (0 month) was 0.078% and after one month to three months increased to 0.106% -0.116% (an increase of 35.89% -48.72%). Free fatty acids content of VCO at 0 month 0.073% and after one to three months increased to 0.101% -0.141% (an increase of 35.36% - 93.15%). Highest of peroxide value VCO is using starter oil from the natural enzyme papain, is 1893 meq/kg oil, while the natural enzymes bromelain only 0.704 meq/kg oil. The composition of fatty acids, especially C12 (lauric acid), range 50.35-54.30%. In generally, the results obtained fullfill the APCC standard.
