Abstract

Critical condition of muntok white pepper of Bangka Belitung and its alternative recoveryBangka Belitung (Babel) Province is one of the pepper producing areas in Indonesia, particularly for white pepper. Recently, its role however tends to lower indicated by the decreases in cultivation areas and production of white pepper. A number of factors causing the decrease of production and plated area of pepper in Babel are fluctuation of pepper price, infestation of plant diseases, uncontrolled exploitation of tin mining, and expansion of other estate crops. If the factors are not able be controlled carefully, it may result in muntok white pepper, the trademark of Babel, be eliminated over the time or neglected. Hence, a number of alternative solutions such as zoning of main crops growing, diversification of crop production, and strengthening of capital and institutional supports may be established to minimize the decreases of black pepper areas in Babel.

Abstract

Development of beef cattle agribusiness through partnership patternBeef cattle are the largest contributor of the ruminants to the national meat production, therefore cattle farming is potential to be developed. In Indonesia, cattle are raised traditionally by farmers as a family saving and as draught animal in land preparation. Beef cattle farming is commonly as a small-scale farming and consists of breeding, fattening, and integrated farming system with food crops or estate crops. Development of beef cattle agribusiness through partnership pattern could be an alternative approach in increasing farmers' incomes and national meat production. Partnership is a cooperation between two or more partners in beef cattle farming in preproduction, production processes, and marketing based on equally and profitable principles. The development of beef catlle farming through partnership pattern is expected to meet the national demand for meat that continuously increases. On the other hand, the high demand for beef cattle meat gives an opportunity to develop beef cattle farming in the country through partnership to increase production and productivity. This paper reviewed the development of beef cattle farming through partnership pattern. To achieve the high farming efficiency, it is needed to manage the system integratedly from upstream to downstream by applying the agribusiness principles and partnership pattern to obtain the high and sustainable profit.

Abstract

Electricity as a potential co-product of sugar factoryGlobal energy crisis not only impact the increase in electricity price but also influence the shortage of electricity supply, so that the development of bioenergy as a potential renewable energy resource needs to be accomplished. Sugar cane is the potential energy resource to produce electricity. Some sugar producing countries have already sold electricity surplus to local company. Electricity production was about 150 kWh/ton of cane by using technology of condensing/extraction turbines (TCE). Moreover, new technology by using biomass integrated gasification to gas turbines (BIG-GT) was able to produce 300 kWh/ton of cane. Production of electricity by using TCE technology is potential to be applied in some sugar factories in Indonesia. The potential of electricity production in the near future is estimated around 379,310 MWH from surplus of bagasse and around 1,029,630 MWH from trash, so that the total potency of electricity production from sugar cane is about 1,408,940 MWH.

Abstract

Developing new momentum of rural development in IndonesiaMuch has happened in the new order era of the Indonesia rural development, including the achievement of a high level of rural economic growth and the development of physical infrastructure. At the same time, Indonesia still faces enormous rural development problems especially it has been far from equitably distributed opportunity among the people to participate in the rural development process itself. When we made some comparison with South Korea, in rural development with Saemaul Undong movement, there are two problems in Indonesia rural development which it related with the loss of the rural development momentum and lack of rural individual and community development. In the beginning of 1960’s, the Indonesia rural condition was relatively same with South Korea, poor infrastructure and massive poverty in rural area. The South Korea rural development based on the systematic human resources development and invested heavily in improving the infrastructure for agriculture production. The Korea government has to ease regulations related to farmland ownership, only farmers should be allowed to own farmland. Through these programs, the number of farmers in rural areas decline sharply and average household land ownership increase in the last twenty years. To accelerate the process of rural development in Indonesia, the government needs to establish a new momentum to capture and combine the spirit of individualities and active participation of the farmers as a part of rural community.

Abstract

The contamination of mold in feed and its controlThe contamination of some kinds of mold as Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., and Mucor spp. can be found in feed and feedstuff especially corn. The contamination causes health disturbance of animals. The disease is not only caused by the mold, but also by toxin produced. Health loss in term of economy due to the mold contamination is quite significant. Some factors can support the appearance of mold and toxic contamination in feed, especially humidity and temperature. In Indonesia, Aspergillus sp. especially A. flavus is the dominant mold contaminant in feed. Controlling as prevention by early detection or visual inspection and good management is a better choice compared to cure.
