Abstract

ABSTRACTGelam (Melaleuca sp.) mostly grew at the degraded peat-swamp forest. This study investigated the specific gravity of gelam based on two factors, i.e. site location and growth level. Site location was divided into two sub factors of peat thickness namely 51 to 100 cm (l1) and 101 to 200 cm (l2). Growth level was divided into four stages namely seedling, sapling, poles, and tree. Research result show that specific gravity of gelam wood (dry-air and dry-kiln) at the l2 was bigger than l1. Specific gravity of gelam wood (dry-air and dry-kiln) based on the growth level at the location 1 and location 2 show the same pattern, namely the level of tree > pole > sapling > seedling. The interaction between location versus growth level are no significant different on the specific gravity of the gelam wood, and it is start from 0.55 to 0.77 or at the medium category. Keywords: Gelam, growth level, site location, specific gravity

Abstract

ABSTRACTVillage forest program is one of the breakthroughs of the Ministry of Forestry for community-based forest management. In order to manage the village forest, needing the data and information about the biomassa at the site. The research was aimed to estimate the above-ground carbon pool at the Buntoi Village Forest that located at the protection forest in the form of deep peat areas. This site is administratively located at the Pulang Pisau District, Central Kalimantan Province. Research result showed that above-ground carbon pool at the peat-swamp scrub of Buntoi Village Forest is predictively namely 16.510 ton, whereas above-ground carbon pool at peat-swamp secondary forest of Buntoi Village Forest is predictively namely 176.059 ton. These data are lower than Central Kalimantan REL standard, with the result the Buntoi Village Forest is suitable for carbon trade purpose at the future. Keywords: Buntoi, carbon pool, peat-swamp areas, village forest

Abstract

ABSTRACTMeranti (Shorea balangeran) is one of some species that grow well at peat swamp forest. Wood of meranti useful to furniture, kosen (window or door frame), board etc. Unfortunately, the waste of its wood processing is low valuable. Therefore, utilizing waste of meranti to particle board is the good idea. In order to strengthen the particle board, it could be coated by braided rattan. This research was aimed to determine the physical and mechanical properties of particle board that made from waste of meranti, using PVAc adhesive and coated by woven rattan. The research was conducted to campare particle board without woven rattan-coated (a1) and using woven rattan-coated (a2) with 20%, 30%, and 40% of adhesive level respectively. Research result show that using adhesive with level of 40% is better than 20% and 30% in the form of physical and mechanical properties and suitable with JIS 5908:2003 standard. Keywords : particle board, waste, physical and mechanical properties

Abstract

ABSTRACTGaharu is non timber forest product in the form of the rotted xylem of which yields fragrant resinous material that produced from gaharu trees or tree eaglewood as Aquilaria spp. Gaharu trees are suitable planted at the degraded peat-swamp forest that widely contained at the Central Kalimantan Province. This research was aimed to analyze the feasibility of gaharu planted at the peat-swamp forest in Jabiren Raya sub District, Pulang Pisau District, Central Kalimantan Province. The research was conducted at the gaharu (Aquilaria malaccensis) plantation aged 1 to 6 years old. Inoculation of stems and harvesting were done at the moment aged 5 and 6 years old respectively. Data analysis using NPV, BCR, and IRR with the assumption using internl and external fund at the 7.5%, 7.75%, and 12% of rate. Research result showed that gaharu cultivation is feasible with NPV, BCR, and IRR namely IDR 92.51 mill, 1.34, and 0.1686 respectively at the 7.5% of rate. At the rate of 7.75%, NPV, BCR, and IRR namely IDR 89.07 mill, 1.33, and 0.1686 respectively, and at the rate of 12%, NPV, BCR, and IRR namely IDR 40.46 mill, 1.17, and 0.1686 respectively. The value of IRR showed that gaharu cultivation is feasible conducted at the rate under 16.86%.Keywords: external and internal fund, feasibility, gaharu

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn order to increase plywood production in Indonesia, utilization the timbers coming from forest community is very important. Some species that widely planted at the forest community in DI Yogyakarta are akacia (Acacia auriculiformis) and sungkai (Peronema canescens). This research was aimed to know the combination some veneers formed of acacia timber and sungkai timber with the urea formaldehide resurfaced adhesive to producing the high quality plywood. The combination treatments were veneers from acacia timber (S1), veneer from sungkai timber (S2), veneer-core from acacia timber and veneer – face – back from sungkai timber (S3), and veneer-core from sungkai timber and veneer – face – back from akasia timber (S4). The experiment used complete randomized design with the further test using Tukey procedure in processing data. The research result showed that the treatment of veneer-core from acacia timber, and veneer-face-back from sungkai timber with the 60 #/MSGGL resurfaced adhesive have the better physical and mechanical property than the other treatments. Despitefully, sungkai timber has more decorative wood and a high commercial value. Keywords: Acacia, plywood, sungkai, veneer

Abstract

ABSTRACTMahang (Macaranga hypoleuca) is one of some lesser know species that widely grow at the secondary forest, especially in Central Kalimantan. This research was aimed to determine the properties of mahang timber quality and the relationship between axial and radial position concerning its properties. Research method using the factorial complete random design (CRD) 3 x 2. The first factor is the axial wood position (a) consist of the bottom (a1), the middle (a2), and the top (a3). The second factor is radial position (b) consist of axial (b1), and radial (b2). Data analysis using honestly significant difference (HSD). The wood’s water content test using ISO 3130 – 1975 (E) standart, the wood density test using ISO 3131 – 1975 (E) standart, and the wood shrinkage test using ISO/DIS 4469. The cell proportion test using grid mask method of Image Pro Plus V 4.5 program, whereas its dimension test using Image Pro Plus V 4.5 program. The wood extractive content test using ASTM D.2016-65, (ASTM D.1107-56), and (ASTM D.1110-56) procedures. Research result showed that wet vapor is 44.43%, dry vapor is 13.46%, specific gravity is 0.36, and the shrinkage TR ratio is 1.76. About fiber dimension: the fiber length is 1.6 mm, fiber diameter is 18.5µ, lumen diameter is 15.2 µ and thick of cell wall is 3.3 µ. The proportion of wood cell: spokes cell is 10.5%, parenkim is 11.3%, vessel cell is 16.5% and fiber is 62.1%. There is a relationship between several adhessiveness characteristics and wood quality toward the influences of the mahang wood’s actial and radial positions. Keywords: axial, Macaranga hypoleuca, radial, wood quality
