The Mutawatir: Jurnal Keilmuan Tafsir Hadith is published twice a year by the Department of Al-Quran and Hadith, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Philosophy, Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UIN) Surabaya Indonesia. The journal aims at publishing an original academic research on the main topic of the Quran and Hadith studies. The subject covers all related issues on the Quran and Hadith such as the classical inquiry of the Quran, tafsir and Hadith, methodological examination of the classical and contemporary scholars to the Quran and Hadith, contemporary approaches to the Quran and Hadith, the oriental studies of the Quran and Hadith, the living phenomena which is so called as living Quran and Hadith, and all related issues to the interdisciplinary studies of the Quran and Hadith.

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive examination of the ba’ayun mawlid tradition in South Kalimantan, offering a unique perspective on the living hadith and cultural acculturation within the context of Islam’s peaceful dissemination in the region. Originating as the Bapalas Bidan, a pre-Islamic ritual honoring supernatural spirits involved in childbirth, this tradition underwent a significant transformation after the advent of Islam, retaining its structure while embracing Islamic values and practices. Today, ba’ayun mawlid takes place in mosques under the guidance of religious leaders and midwives, featuring salawat in place of Kaharingan spells. This study delves into the diverse motivations driving community engagement in this tradition, including vow fulfillment, the annual zuriat ritual, the pursuit of blessings from sacred customs and locales, tawassul to nurture filial devotion and love for the Prophet, efforts to enhance livelihoods, cultural heritage preservation, and the evolution of ba’ayun mawlid into a form of religious tourism. Rooted in the prophetic hadith promising reunion with loved ones in the hereafter, this cultural phenomenon underscores the profound influence of religious practices on shaping values, identities, and the cultural landscape of the Banua Halat community. It provides valuable insights into the dynamics of acculturation and the enduring impact of religion on Indonesian society.

Abstract

This article delves into the ascendancy of Nukhbat al-Fikar within the realm of Hadith scholarship during the Ottoman era. It posits that the book’s rise to authority was intricately tied to the establishment of Islamic madrasas under Ottoman rule, an influence stemming from educational practices in Egypt and its environs. Through a comprehensive exploration of Turkish sources, this paper contends that Nukhbat al-Fikar held a prominent place in Ottoman madrasa curricula due to the genealogical connections between Ottoman Hadith scholars and Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalānī. Additionally, the work’s author, Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalānī, enjoyed a lofty reputation among Ottoman scholars, which further solidifying the book’s status. This study underscores the popularity of Nukhbat al-Fikar by examining the proliferation of works by Ottoman Hadith scholars. These scholars sought to amplify its impact through translations, commentary notes (ta’līq), comprehensive explanations (sharh), and concise summaries. In doing so, they contributed to the enduring legacy of Nukhbat al-Fikar within Ottoman scholarly and educational circles. This research sheds light on the intricate interplay between educational systems, scholarly authority, and the dissemination of Islamic knowledge in the context of Ottoman Turkey

Abstract

This article delves into the intellectual landscape of Tariq Ramadan, focusing on his approach to interpretation and contextualization. The analysis centers on Ramadan’s work, In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad, which, despite its biographical nature, unveils a profound connection between his thoughts and the art of interpretation and contextualization. The article contends that while Ramadan may not align himself explicitly with the tradition of reinterpretation or contextualization, his practical methodologies reflect interpretive strategies that breathe new life into historical texts, adapting them to contemporary contexts. Moreover, this paper argues that Ramadan’s contextual interpretations are deeply rooted in ethics, underpinned by the belief in their universal applicability across diverse conditions. These ethical values, as delineated by Ramadan, serve as a bridge between the past and the present, as they are seamlessly interwoven with educational narratives drawn from the life of Prophet Muhammad. These narratives not only provide a basis for Muslims to rekindle the prophetic ideals in the modern era but also offer a compelling framework for fostering moral and ethical guidance in a rapidly changing world. In this intricate web of interpretation and contextualization, Tariq Ramadan’s work emerges as a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse on Islamic thought and its relevance in contemporary society.

Abstract

This article delves into the scholarly contributions of al-Biqā’ī, a thinker whose intellectual journey unfolded amidst the turbulent backdrop of the Crusades, a period marked by intense horizontal conflicts between Muslims and Christians. Despite the charged atmosphere of polemical exchanges, al-Biqā’ī’s approach to intertextual interpretation sets him apart as a unique figure. His receptivity to Christian and Jewish traditions in his Qur’anic interpretations reflects an openness that defies the prevailing discord. This study scrutinizes al-Biqā’ī’s perspective on the status of the Gospel and the Torah within the realm of Qur’anic interpretation. Employing textual analysis, we argue that al-Biqā’ī permits references to the Gospel and the Torah as complementary sources (isti’nās) within the interpretive framework. However, he restricts their use as foundational or legal arguments (istidlāl and ihtijāj), particularly in theological or doctrinal matters. Within the theological context, al-Biqā’ī advocates against referencing the Gospel or the Torah. Nevertheless, when these references are confined to the complementary realm, such as citing historical narratives more elaborately detailed in the Gospel and Torah, they enrich insight, knowledge, and the narrative fabric of Qur’anic interpretation.

Abstract

The pandemic has reignited longstanding tensions between science and religion, transforming their once harmonious relationship into an intense conflict. This discord has cast a shadow on the credibility of religion in the midst of the pandemic and the evolution of scientific civilization. This study presents a religious discourse through the Sufi trilogy of ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī, Ibn ‘Arabī, and Achmad Asrori al-Ishaqi. Within this interpretative framework, al-Jīlānī suggests the pandemic symbolizes destiny and human misbehavior consequences. Ibn ‘Arabiī views it as part of the Absolute phenomenon, while al-Ishaqi sees it as a reflection of an unfriendly human-nature relationship. This exploration aims to provide nuanced insights, transcending binary conflicts, and fostering a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by the pandemic within the context of science and religion integration.

Abstract

This article analyzes the emerging trends of interpretation on YouTube and their impact on the religious paradigm within Indonesian society. Employing a phenomenological approach that grounds itself in the lived and felt experiences shaping reality, this research identifies three distinct schools of virtual interpretation studies. Firstly, the exclusive textualist school, exemplified by MTA. Secondly, the moderate school, which manifests as a spectrum with two poles: 1) The minimal pole, represented by moderates such as Abdul Somad and Adi Hidayat, who maintain proximity to textualists. 2) The maximum pole, where moderates like Quraish Shihab and Bahauddin Nursalim strike a balance between text and context. Lastly, the revisionist school, embodied by Mun’im Sirry. The implications of these three schools extend to the public paradigm, as followers of the textualist-exclusive school may adopt an exclusive stance, while the liberal revisionist school could potentially encourage permissiveness in society. Conversely, the synthesis of text and context is likely to cultivate a moderate attitude among the audience.

Abstract

This empirical-ethnographic research delves into the burgeoning landscape of social media discussions, particularly focusing on the YouTube channel @FaqihAbdulKodir. Amidst the plethora of content, this channel stands out for its unique exploration of ḥadīth through the lens of qirā’ah mubādalah, attracting a substantial audience and gaining recognition among academics and gender activists. Employing reception theory analysis, this study seeks to synthesize insights from @FaqihAbdulKodir’s exploration of ḥadīth concerning livelihood. The research sheds light on the reception of the prophet’s teachings, unraveling the intricate process of knowledge transmission. The findings reveal a spectrum of internalisations, rooted in the understanding of reciprocity. The research concludes with three distinct types of reception. First, an exegesis reception manifests as a trending interpretation style of living ḥadīth. Second, an aesthetic reception highlights the beauty of Islamic teachings, fostering equality before God, particularly in matters of livelihood. Third, a functional reception emerges, emphasizing mutuality in family income as a cornerstone for household harmony. This study not only contributes to the academic discourse on ḥadīth but also offers insights into the multifaceted impacts of @FaqihAbdulKodir’s channel on individuals’ perceptions and practices in their daily lives.

Abstract

This article delves into the sufistic-philosophical interpretations put forth by Guru Sekumpul, a prominent figure in 20th-century Kalimantan, primarily through his work, Risālah Wasīlah. Employing a historical-philosophical approach, the paper dissects the manifold concepts embedded within the text as follows: First, Guru Sekumpul’s interpretations have a significant connection with the prominent figures and concepts of philosophical sufism. Consequently, Guru Sekumpul’s sufism should not only be confined to the realm of ishārī-akhlaqī-’amalī, but should also be acknowledged as a product of naẓarī-falsafī thought. Second, the positioning of Risālah Wasīlah and Guru Sekumpul’s teachings within the historical framework of Sufism in South Kalimantan signifies an attempt to unify the philosophical sufism that predates ishārī sufism. Third, the polemic surrounding philosophical sufism in Kalimantan is recognized as a specific and temporally limited phenomenon that should not lead to the exclusion of philosophical sufism from the broader discourse. This perspective is particularly significant when considering the pivotal role and historical dominance of philosophical sufism in the 16th century. Fourth, the teachings of philosophical sufism should transcend mere cosmological theory and extend to encompass a deep spiritual engagement aimed at reaching the core of religious experience. This approach advocates for an essentialist, universal, and moderate foundation for religious practices, in order to mitigate the risks of rigid, superficial (suḥṭīyah), excessive (tashaddud), and extreme (ifrāṭ).
