Abstract

This paper explores the methods and approaches of intellectual history in the works of Jonathan A.C. Brown on the canonization of prophetic sources. Although his studies have sparked scholarly discussion in the following decades, the existing discussions have yet to involve his entire study of the topic and reconstructing his methods and approaches. This article examines Brown’s works on the canonization of ḥadīth texts to outline the methods and approaches to intellectual history that he applies. The close reading method is implemented in this article against Brown’s publications on the role of al-Dāraquṭnī, the canonization of al-Ṣaḥīḥayn, and al-Sunan by Ibn Mājah. Through the determination of the time and period of canonization and the explanation of the reasons behind the canonical status obtained by al-Ṣaḥīḥayn and al-Sunan li Ibn Mājah, Brown’s study on the canonization of prophetic sources in the Sunni community is a response to two problems left by Ignaz Goldziher. The use of methods and approaches in the field of intellectual history allows Brown to examine sources that are common in traditional hadith science in a new way of reading to determine spatial space, periodization, and the role of several agents from the intellectual community in the historical dynamics of hadith canon formation. Apart from criticism of the use of categories from Biblical canon studies to the phenomenon of hadith literature, Brown’s study shows the possibility of expanding the study beyond issues of source authenticity.

Abstract

The dissemination of religious moderation through various currents of thought continues to evolve, as evidenced by the increasing number of academic publications discussing religious moderation from diverse perspectives. However, while academic research has succeeded in enhancing public understanding, the literature often focuses more on verses pertaining to aḥkām, neglecting the study of religious moderation based on narrative verses in the Qur’an, which serve as a role models for expressing religion in a moderate manner. This research emphasizes the reasoning behind religious moderation based on the story of Abraham in the Qur’an, analyzed through the lens of the Islamic trilogy. Utilizing literature data and the theory of maqāṣidī interpretation, this paper identifies three models of religious moderation exemplified by Prophet Abraham according to the Islamic trilogy: First, the dimension of faith, which involves understanding and strengthening the prominence of monotheism through correct and proper religious comprehension. Second, the dimension of Sharia, which narrates values aimed at upholding humanity and welfare. Third, the dimension of morality, which emphasizes the importance of peaceful preaching to foster harmony in religious diversity and plurality.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the concept of religious tolerance according to Mahmud Yunus as presented in his work, Tafsir Qur’an Karim. This research is crucial for examining how Yunus rationalizes the concept of religious tolerance in his interpretation of Qur’anic verses. Mahmud Yunus’s interpretation in Tafsir Qur’an Karim is significance for understanding religious tolerance by integrating theological values with a rational approach, which is particularly relevant in a pluralistic society. Based on this premise, the article addresses two research questions: first, how does Mahmud Yunus interpret verses related to religious tolerance in Tafsir Qur’an Karim? Second, what form of rationality does Mahmud Yunus employ in his understanding of religious tolerance in Tafsir Qur’an Karim? This research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing both primary and secondary sources. Content analysis is used to examine these sources. The findings of this study reveal that Mahmud Yunus considers religious tolerance to be integral part of Islamic teachings as explained in the Qur’an. Additionally, Yunus asserts that the practice of religious teachings by Muslims should be based on critical values and religious texts. Undoubtedly, Mahmud Yunus’s interpretation is influenced by his educational and socio-historical background, particularly the Islamic revival movement in Minangkabau.

Abstract

The popular interpretation of Qs. al-Fātiḥah [1]: 6-7 is that al-maghḍūb and al-ḍāllīn refer to Jews and Christians. In the extremist view, this interpretation is used to justify jihād against perceived enemies of Islam. This study, using the content analysis method, explores the counter-narrative to extremism in Tafsīr al-Fātiḥah by Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith. The primary source of this study is Jazuli’s Tafsīr al-Fātiḥah. The results of this study are twofold: Firstly, the main idea of Qs. al-Fātiḥah is that guidance is God’s prerogative. Therefore, it is wrong to be intolerant and fanatical towards other religious communities simply because they do not align with Islamic values and teachings. Secondly, the counter-narrative to extremism in Tafsīr al-Fātiḥah is an effort to reframe the understanding that those who are astray and incur wrath are not only Jews and Christians, but also Muslims who deviate from truth and act extremely. These findings contribute to the understanding that Islam does not belittle other religious communities but criticizes their acts and traits. This idea can encourage Muslims to be more moderate and tolerant towards outsiders while remaining critical of insiders.

Abstract

This article examines the characteristics of oral interpretation of the Qur’an by Friday preachers at Taqwa Mosque in Langsa Aceh. The oral interpretation in Friday sermons is compelling subject for study because the preachers elucidated Qur’anic verses during their discourse. These preachers convey religious messages grounded in the hadith and Qur’anic texts, which were interpreted contextually. This study employs qualitative methodology, incorporating phenomenological and hermeneutical approaches. The collected data were analyzed using Gadamer’s hermeneutic theory and Walter J. Ong’s theory of orality. The findings of this research, grounded in these theoretical frameworks, reveal two primary results. First, the Friday preachers’ interpretations of the Qur’an are deeply influenced by their preexisting understandings. Second, the oral interpretation in their Friday sermons exibit characteristics that are additive, aggregative, redundant, conservative, closely tied to human lifeworld, agonistic, empathic-participative, homeostatic, and situational.

Abstract

Ibn Taymīyah singled out his long refutation against an Ash‘arite theologian Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī on ta’wīl in his Dar’ Ta‘āruḍ al-‘Aql wa al-Naql. The main contention between the two is whether rational evidence should take precedence over scriptural evidence when interpreting passages in the Qur’an. When dealing with the difficult passages that could lead to anthropomorphism, the Ash‘arite employ allegorical interpretation, or ta’wīl, thereby priority is given to reason. It is with this problem in mind that Ibn Taymīyah launched his sustained critique towards al-Rāzī. However, upon further consideration, Ibn Taymīyah’s criticism of al-Rāzī appears to overlook the broader framework that the latter brought to the discussion, particularly regarding the reciprocal relationship between reason and revelation in his theory of inference and its origins in earlier Asharīte’s epistemology. This article aims to discuss the debates between the two scholars by putting their main contention in the context. Firstly, the article will provide an analysis on al-Rāzī’s methodological and epistemological approach to resolving the problem of the relationship between reason and revelation. The folllowing section will exemine how Ibn Taymīyah responded to al-Rāzī, and the criticism he leveled against him. The final section will assess the debates, evaluating the extent to which Ibn Taymīyah succeeded in refuting al-Rāzī and identifying any misunderstandings he may have had regarding al-Rāzī’s arguments.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the Rumah Tahfiz Qur’an (RTQ), which has recently emerged in several regions of Indonesia. In the historical context of Qur’anic education in Indonesia, these institutions are relatively new. Traditionally, Qur’anic education has been intensively practiced in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) with their longstanding traditions. However, over the past decade, RTQs have proliferated in various regions. Through field research in six districts in Solo Raya, this article demonstrates that the emergence of RTQs is driven by diverse individuals and social groups, each finding their own responses and followers. Notably, most of the founders and managers are young individuals who lack Qur’anic experience from pesantren or specialized Qur’anic training. Additionally, parents who enroll their children in RTQs generally desire for their children to become proficient in reading and memorizing the Qur’an, while they themselves are occupied with work. Consequently, this article argues that RTQs represent a new trend in Qur’anic education that offer a different approach to the traditional pesantren model. Furthermore, this phenomenon reflects a form of identity seeking among Muslims who strive to remain pious and relevant in contemporary times.

Abstract

This article explores the complex relationship between the wicked actions of Lūṭ’s community, as described in the Qur’an, and the particular type of retribution, known as ‘adhāb, that they experienced. The study used a qualitative research approach to thoroughly examine the Qur’ānic passages, aiming to reveal subtle connections between crimes and divine punishment. This research enhances comprehension of the concept of divine justice as depicted in the Qur’an by utilizing the theoretical framework of the theory of retribution, provided in a thematical explanation. The inquiry delves into the causality of the ‘adhāb as an effect of human transgressions, and in the study of Lūṭ’s narrative, there are various torments bestowed. The findings not only reveal historical and moral lessons embedded in the account of Lūṭ’s tribe but also offer a methodological framework for examining comparable narratives in the Qur’ān. This study seeks to prompt debates on the deep correlations between human behavior and divine repercussions, enhancing understanding of Islamic scriptures’ ethical and spiritual lessons.
