Abstract

Rice Cropping Index 400 is an option to increase national rice production by 5% every year. The purpose of this study is to know the prospect of increasing cropping index of irrigated paddy to Rice Cropping Index 400 in West Sumatra Province in terms of agro ecosystem sustainability and financial feasibility. The assessments used primary and secondary data. Quantitative analysis was applied to analyze total revenue and revenue to cost ratio (R/C). The results indicated that Rice Cropping Index 400 is feasible in West Sumatra Province in terms of agro ecosystem sustainability and financial feasibility with R/C value 2,22. The scenario of Rice Cropping Index 400 is to plant rice varieties Silugonggo and Ciherang, with “culikan” seedbed 15 days before harvest.

Abstract

Arafura and Timor Sea is territorial waters which surround three countries of Indonesia, Australia, and Timor Leste. Both seas have very strategic and transboundary conditions, such as for fisheries, sea-climate variability, marine pollutions and others. Therefore, we need studies to understand the characteristics of currents circulation. The most important physical parameters of these features is the dynamics of the upwelling and down welling. Hydrodynamics of 3-D modelling for currents circulation, using tides and wind as initial conditions, is employed to simulating scenarios of the Northwest monsoon, Southeast monsoon, and transition of both monsoons. The results are qualitatively verified. The dynamics of horizontally surface currents follows the monsoon system, and the vertical circulation is significantly exists. Upwelling in coastal waters south of the island of Timor, and between the Islands and the Tanimbar Aru islands appear in all the monsoon due to the influence of the bathymetry. The current circulation is potentially indirect contribution to the fisheries activities in the seas.

Abstract

Phenotypic performance and yields needed for specific lines selection. Experiment was conducted to determine phenotypic performance and grain yield of nine promising lines of composite maize (Zea mays) as the information needed to released as specific varieties of West Java. A set of field experiment were established in Majalengka and Sumedang district, from April to Juli 2010. Nine maize lines and 3 control varieties i.e. Gumarang, Makmur-1, and Sinta-1 were planted based on a randomized block design. The result showed that AS-1 has better ear performance than control varieties. R2, R3, and AS-1 has a character of high yields potential equivalent to the varieties and opportunity to be released as specific composite maize varieties of West Java.

Abstract

Infectious disease remains as a prominent health problem and worsened by the emerging antibiotic resistance. Probiotic has been an alternatievly popular application. Lactobacillus plantarum mar8 isolated from tropical fruit showed a stable mannose specific adhesin (MSA) activity in term of competing for and inducing immunity to infecting pathogen. This research focused on coating the probiotic with dextrin in fruit juice using a spraydrying technique to produce microencapsulated probiotic. The microencapsulation using 5% dextrin in either passion fruit or orange juice produced more compact capsule and supported higher probiotic viability. The microencapsulated probiotic expressed MSA gene for at least 10 generation indicating conserved function of probiotic.

Abstract

Google Insights for Search is a reliable application to know the search interests on Google search engine, furthermore this application usage can be developed to conduct the research of internet users searching behaviour. However, the limitations of tutorials that discuss this application’s features usage comprehensively resulted in some users unable to use it optimally. Google Insights for Search features analyzed by classifying the features group, list every feature, analyzed the variations of the value filled on these features and examined every link until the result page part to know its searching expandability. In this way, all the features functions and the optimal usage of Google Insights for Search will be explored.

Abstract

The potential of extremely halophilic archaea degrading hydrocarbon in hypersalin environment is reviewed. The emphasis is on the last 30 years studies. The identification of extremely halophilic archaea is important as this type of prokaryote is predominant in the hypersaline environment with NaCl concentration higher than 20% (w/v). Recent studies have shown that extremely halophilic archaea especially those belong to Halobacterium, Haloarcula, and Haloferax might play an important role in hydrocarbon degradation in hypersaline environment. Other that can be found in pristine and hydrocarbon-contaminated hypersaline environment, member of these genuses are also capable of using hydrocarbon as source of energy and carbon.

Abstract

New improved variety is a component of technology that hold an important role in increasing rice production. Farmers preferences of improved varieties have to be known because it affects on the level of farmer adoption of new paddy varieties. The aims of this research are to understand the characteristics of paddy that are important to farmers and to know the most prefered new varieties in Donggala. The research is a participatory research which supported by site observation. The data were analyzed by perceived quality method. The results show that the characteristics that are important to farmers preference in Donggala are production, pest and disease rate, the number of tillers, rice texture, the ease of harvest, the age of harvest, plant height and panicle length. However the paddy variety which is most favored by the farmers in Donggala is Inpari 4.

Abstract

Indonesia has two seasons, rainy and dry season which affects the adaptive behavior of the occupants. One of the traditional houses that still survive is a traditional house Sao Pu’u in Wogo village, East Nusa Tenggara. The research was conducted to compare of neutrality, preferences, and thermal acceptance of the occupants in the house between rainy and dry season. Thermal value was measured with Questem 34 and wind velocity measured with Anemometre Kanomax. The data were processed using regression analysis. In the rainy season, neutral temperature, 27.1oC, 23.9°C,and 23.3°C. Meanwhile, in the dry season, neutral temperature, preference temperature, and thermal acceptance were 24,9oC, 23.4°C, and 27.1oC. The conclusion was that the occupants prefer a lower temperature adaptively both in rainy and dry season.

Abstract

Kemiri sunan (Reutealis trisperma) is a potential tree plant for biodiesel source. However, information related to phenotypic and genotypic variabilities of intra- and inter-populations is very lacking. This work aims to identify morphometric traits which show any differences among three populations of kemiri sunan as variety candidates, i.e. Banyuresmi, Cinunuk, and Padahanten. Thirty mature leafs and 30 normal seeds were randomly collected from each population. Morphometric characters observed were length and width of leaf, length and width of seed, seed weight, and kernel weight. Analysis of variance showed a high significant (p ≤ 0.01) in inter-populations differences for almost all characters observed, except for seed weight character. Leaf width has high value of broad sense heritability (H2), so that it should be used as the most valuable character for distinguishing among the three populations of kemiri sunan. Based on dissimilarity matrices analysis, Padahanten population showed the highest dissimilarity.

Abstract

Ink made from zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles colloid has been synthesized by using a sol-gel method. Employing an XRD, it was obtained that the sizes of particles were around 3–4 nm. Utilizing a UV-Vis spectrometer, it was found that the band gap energies were 3.5 and 3.45 eV for the sizes of 3 and 4 nm, respectively. For the purpose of testing the ink effectiveness, the ZnO colloid was mixed with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 or glycerine. Using pure ZnO colloid as printer ink, invisible characters under natural illumination had been successfully printed on specific papers. Under ultraviolet (UV) illumination, the invisible characters became visible. The developed ink, therefore, has potential applications for security of bank notes or passbooks.
