Abstract

Across cultures, people with disabilities often challenge negative attitudes, discrimination, and even social exclusion. At the same time, religious narratives (al-Qur’ān) are frequently understood to justify the difference between people with disabilities (a’mā) and ordinary people (al-baṣīr). Therefore, this paper will critically study the interpretation of QS. ‘Abasa 1-4 to redefine Quranic ethics in dealing with people with disabilities. This paper analyzes the interpretation of Muslim scholars from classical to contemporary on QS. ‘Abasa 1-4 through an analytic descriptive approach. This paper suggests the orthodoxy of classical to modern interpretations in comprehending QS. ‘Abasa 1-4. Three main topics, in general, are highlighted by classical to contemporary exegetes in understanding QS. ‘Abasa 1-4. Firstly, the profile of ‘Abdullāh ibn Ummī Maktūm as a person with disabilities who visited the forum of the Prophet Muhammad. Although there are different opinions, most commentators believe ‘Abdullāh ibn Ummī Maktūm is the figure discussed in  QS. ‘Abasa 1-4. Secondly, ‘Abdullāh ibn Ummī Maktūm’s visit was to seek religious education from the Prophet Muhammad. This indicates that the Quran prioritizes equal rights to education, regardless of wealth, strength, disability status, etc. Thirdly, the Prophet Muhammad’s reaction of frowning and turning away served as a form of moral education and teaching etiquette in public spaces to anyone, regardless of social status.

Abstract

The Averroism movement emerged as a form of support and resistance from European thinkers who followed Ibn Rushd’s way of thinking against church authority. This movement opposed the indoctrination by church authorities that restricted freedom of thought. Church authorities assumed that church doctrine was true and should not contradict it. The impact of the massive Averroism movement caused the loss of church authority accompanied by internal conflicts that hit the church camp. To strengthen the doctrine and faith of Catholics, Pope Paul III ordered Ignatius Loyola to establish schools, colleges, and seminaries which were institutions engaged in education known as the Society of Jesus. This study seeks to review and deepen the historical and philosophical study of Averroes’ movement in the establishment and development of the Society of Jesus in Indonesia. This study uses a literature review research method with two approaches, namely the historical research approach and the philosophical approach. The results of the study stated that there were two factors relating the Averroism movement to the development of the Society of Jesus education in Indonesia,: The loss of church authority due to opposition to the Averroism movement and Efforts to indoctrinate through education about Catholic teachings and understanding through the Society of Jesus. This study emphasizes that the establishment and development of the Society of Jesus in Indonesia cannot be separated from the influence of the Averroism which is expressed in thoughts about freedom of thought and the indoctrination of education.

Abstract

This phenomenological study deeply reveals the subjective experiences of interfaith couples in Tana Toraja in negotiating religious identities in private spaces. The findings highlight that negotiation is a dynamic process influenced by awareness of differences, adaptation strategies, the socio-cultural context of Tana Toraja, and the formation of subjective meaning. Factors driving interfaith marriages include freedom to choose a partner, feelings of liking and love, and sometimes a lack of understanding of religion. The main implications touch on spiritual principles, with concerns about potential conflict. However, successful negotiation is based on a commitment to mutual respect, active tolerance, open and empathetic communication, compromise, the formation of inclusive family rituals, and the arrangement of space and time. The socio-cultural context of Tana Toraja, along with its family and tolerance values , also influences the dynamics of this negotiation. Minimizing interfaith marriages internally involves several key strategies: 1) Parents or families play a crucial role in fortifying their children through controlling and teaching Islamic beliefs (aqidah) and morals. Moreover, 2) the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA, Kantor Urusan Agama) can optimize the role of Islamic Religious Counselors in each village by collaborating with Mosque Imams to provide counseling on the importance of marriage registration and educate about the potential risks associated with interfaith marriages.
The Intersection of Thought on Hadīth Methodology: Mahmūd Abu Rayyah’s Critique and Musthafa Al-Sibā’ī’s Defense

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the common ground in the methodology of Hadīth criticism proposed by Mahmūd Abu Rayyah and the defense presented by Musthafa Al-Sibā’ī. These include criticism of the authenticity of hadīth, criticism of the concept of ‘adalah al-shahabah, criticism of Hadīth narrators, and the relation between Hadīth and the Qur’an. Mahmūd Abu Rayyah is known as one of the figures who was critical of the validity of Hadīth and highlighted the aspects of transmission that he considered less robust. On the other hand, Musthafa Al-Sibā’ī emerged as a safeguard of the Hadīth tradition, emphasizing the importance of Hadīth authenticity in the structure of Islamic law and teachings. Through a descriptive-comparative approach, this study explores the backgrounds, critical methods, and defense arguments of the two figures and explores possible points of convergence between them. This study reveals that although fundamental comparisons exist in the approaches and views of the two scholars, their methodologies present complementary dimensions that, when synthesized, offer a more nuanced paradigm for evaluating ḥadīth authenticity in contemporary or modern contexts. It includes the importance of the scientific study of the Sunnah, the need to understand the Sunnah in its historical context, the recognition of the Sunnah’s hermeneutical relationship with Qur’anic exegesis, the criticism of the misuse of Hadīth, the need to contextualize the Sunnah in the Modern era and the influence of modernism.
Reclaiming Justice in Marital Ḥadīth Interpretations: A Netnographic and Mubādalah Analysis of Instagram Discourse

Abstract

This study highlights the importance of contextual interpretation in the dissemination of ḥadīths on social media, particularly regarding gender dynamics in marriage. Focusing on the frequently cited ḥadīth about “the wife’s denial of her husband’s kindness,” this research explores how such texts, when shared without adequate context, contribute to gender-biased narratives and reinforce patriarchal stereotypes in online spaces. Employing a netnographic approach, the study examines interactions on Instagram accounts @thesunnah_path and @khalidbasalamahofficial, revealing interpretive patterns which are often lacking critical engagement. To counter this, the research applies the mubādalah framework—an egalitarian hermeneutic emphasizing reciprocity and mutual responsibility in marital relationships. Findings show that decontextualized ḥadīth dissemination risks misinterpretation and exacerbates gender imbalances, while mubādalah offers a constructive alternative that promotes gender justice and equitable values. The study calls for more inclusive and context-aware approaches in digital da‘wa, ensuring that religious teachings align with contemporary ethical and social realities. It affirms the need for transformative interpretive models to prevent religious discourse from being misused or misunderstood in today’s digital age.

Abstract

This study examines how Islamic awareness influences social media users’ responses to cyberbullying, with a particular focus on individuals with disabilities. The rising cases of cyberbullying targeting vulnerable groups, especially individuals with disabilities, highlight the need for more effective approaches to addressing this negative behavior. In this context, understanding the role of religious values, particularly Islamic teachings, in shaping online behavior becomes crucial. This research aims to explore how Islamic principles such as justice, empathy, and compassion contribute to respectful and supportive responses in online interactions. Using a qualitative approach, 3,869 comments were collected and analyzed from social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The findings reveal a consistent pattern of supportive and empathetic responses, with users often framing their interactions through Islamic teachings, which deters hostile behavior and encourages positive engagement. Compared to previous studies emphasizing regulatory approaches to prevent cyberbullying, this study suggests that internalized religious values may provide a more foundational framework for fostering ethical online conduct. The findings underscore the potential of Islamic awareness as a values-based approach to cyberbullying prevention, offering a culturally resonant solution to complement existing strategies. This study contributes to the field of digital ethics by highlighting the role of religious values in promoting inclusive digital interactions and opens avenues for further research into integrating religious ethics into digital literacy programs.
