Abstract

Jepara regency is the center for wooden furniture industries in Indonesia, and the products are generally marketed through a number of channels. Observed from the artisan to the last consumers, there were 5 common patterns of marketing channels in Jepara regency.  The structure of the furniture market in Jepara is segmented based on product, quality, and price, therefore this condition has resulted in the monopolistic competition market structure at artisan level and showroom (furniture shops).  Artisans of furniture in Jepara usually get the most orders in July, September, and December. The increase in furniture production was influenced by the religious celebrations of Idul Fitri and Christmas. The survey of furniture shops revealed that most raw materials used by the shops were half-done or unfinished furniture bought from the artisan. The best selling furniture design was elegant design with carved ornaments. In the meantime, the survey result of the households in Jepara which envolved households with permanent, semi-permanent, and non-permanent houses as respondents showed that each type had a different value in the process of searching for information concerning furniture models and places to buy furniture.

Abstract

The study of the effects of the clean activities of forest layers in logged areas on the increments of forest value comprises measurement by aerial photograph with scale of 1 : 20.000 and measurement in the field. The stand parameters measured are the percentage of crown cover (C), tree height (H) and crown diameters (D). Whereas, forest values are defined through the measurements of the amounts and qualities of rejuvenations counted after 1 year, 3 year, and 5 year of tidiness. The forest stratums resulted were Cl = 211.6 ha; C2 = 492.0 ha; and C3 = 196.4 ha. The t test conducted in every stratum showed that the tidiness affected significantly on the the amounts and qualities of rejuvenations. It could be concluded that the clean up activities increased the forest values.

Abstract

The compilation of growth stand model usually uses the regression analysis. Homoscedasticity or residual kind homogeneity is one assumption which underlying the use of this regression analysis.  Breaking this assumption causes the low of model accuracy which is shown by the low of determination coefficient and the height of error standard. The problem of heteroscedasticity can be solved by using weighted regression analysis.The Selected Raiser Growth Model equation in this research was transformed into a model equation: ln P = a + b/A, where there was a significant correlation between the growth and the age (R2  = 55.04%, sb0 = 0.041, and sb1 = 0.171).  From the use of weighted regression analysis with weightier wi = 1/”Xi, it can be concluded that there was no real correlation between the growth and the age (R2 = 0.55%, sb0 = 0.572, and sb1 = 2.560).  The use of weightier shows much lower accuracy than without weightier.  However, from the use of weighted regression analysis with weightier: wi = 1/si2, where si2 = residual kinds at free variable group to I (X1) shows that there was significant correlation between the growth and the age (R2 = 45.46%; sb0 = 0.084, and sb1 = 0.205).  There fore it can be said that the accuracy was much better than regression without weightier.  Furthermore,  the use of weighted regression analysis with weightier wi = 1/si2, where  si2 is residual kind at free variable to i (X) which is estimated through second orde polynomial regression model shows a very significant correlation between the growth and the age (where R2 = 87.22%, sb0 = 0.029, and sb1 = 0.072). The last result shows a better accuracy than the preceding treatments.  From this research, it can be concluded that by using a suitable weightier, the use of weighted regression analysis in compiling raiser growth model can improve the model accuracy.

Abstract

Gunung Palung National Park (GPNP) represents the biodiversity of tropical forests remain  in Kalimantan Island. However, the natural ecosystem has been threatened by human impact.  This study aimed (1) to identify the deforestation process inside the national park by imagery analysis of Landsat TM (1992), Landsat ETM+ (1999), and SPOT5 (2004), and (2) to find the driving forces behind agricultural expansions.  The results showed that forest cover of GPNP decreased by 18.7% (equal with 18,675) at an average rate of 1.6% per year from 1992 to 2004.  Land use changes by illegal logging were accelerated after decentralization (1,064 ha in 1992-1999 to 3,781 ha in 1999-2004).  In the other side, increase of mix garden/bush area inside GPNP was relatively constant (4,555 ha in 1992-1999 to 9,040 ha in 1999-2004).  Results also showed tendency on increasing areas for dry-rice cultivation and rubber plantation (averagely 2.0 ha per household).  The study also revealed that secondary forest has constantly decreased in GPNP annually.  Family size and income were considered as important factors that were driving forces of deforestation.  To this, zoning system of the national park by clear participatory demarcation and application of effective buffer-zone support programs were recommended.Keywords: deforestation, agricultural expansion, national park, imagery analysis, zoning system

Abstract

Teak and mahogany furniture industries in Jepara are dominated by small-scale industrial unit, produce simple type of furniture mostly made from less than 28 cm diameter of teak log.  Timber main producers of the industries are Perum Perhutani and village plantations.  Small-scale furniture industries characterized by limited capital, therefore there is no log stocking behavior. This resulted in a close interaction on log supply and demand dynamics between both traders and industries. As a consequence of drastic increase in the number of the industries, one big question on sustainability of raw material for the industries has been emerged. Data taken from this research indicated scarcity of teak and mahogany log.  Limited capital directs industries to blame the difficulties mainly due to increasing timber price. Additionally, the industries (and log traders) who are stand mostly in level 2 of log distribution chain mentioned that compared to 10 years ago, there is difficulty in obtaining bigger log diameter.  It is a very interesting finding that the industries do not certainly sense timber scarcity as one possibility reason behind the timber scarcity.  As weakness on business resilience has been the main characteristic of the industries, the threads would give a direct impact to the industries soon or later.  To this, serious efforts in maintaining timber sustainability, shortening timber distribution chain, together with capital strengthening seem to be the fastest way in supporting the sustainability of the industries.Keywords: teak furniture, timber price, small-scale, timber scarcity

Abstract

Rattan is one of non timber product forest which is very famous in Indonesia. Indonesia has 350 from  the total of 600 rattan species in the world.  Indonesia rattan potential is getting more significant when it is known that among 350 species, only 53 species have been traded in both local and international market. Recently, Indonesia rattan industry facing some serious conditions, such as decreasing raw rattan production, dropping export volume and value of rattan product, and popping out the  imitation rattan.  Improper policy of government, by closing and opening the export the half-finished product of rattan without comprehensive consideration and analyzing become active catalyst of falling down for Indonesia rattan industry. Whereas in “Porter’s Five Forces” concept which was written by Michael Porter (1980), it was stated that the material component is one of five industrial environmental conditions. This concept can be used to analyze industry and company strategy development for looking at market interest.  Based on this concept, Indonesia has potential advantage as world’s main rattan supplier, because rattan can not be found in other place, except a little one.  In application stage, there are some steps can be done to return the glory of rattan, namely: assuring the market of round-semi finished rattan product is opened widely, guarantying the rattan product which has strong competitive value through design development and production cost efficiency, and national campaign to increase the usage of rattan product.Keywords: rattan, raw material, supplier, Porter’s five forces, market
