Abstract

Indonesia’s budget deficit that is financed by debt could increase the government debt. This causes the governemnt budget increase continuously in order to payback the debt. Fiscal sustainability is achieved when the government is capable to manage its debt so that the debt will not burden the future government budget. VECM is employed in this study to determine whether Indonesia’s fiscal is sustainable or not. After calculating the actual condition of the ratio of primary balance to GDP, it is concluded that Indonesia’s fiscal is sustainable for the year of 2000 and 2012.

Abstract

Financial sector stability is difficult to define as there are many factors that influence it. Stress of the financial sub-sector can be used as a proxy to measure the stability of the financial sector. Financial stress index as a composite index which its components could be analyzed using factor analysis can be used as a tool to measure the financial sector stability. In this research I found that financial stress index, consisting of banking variable is the most relevant index for financial sector stability in Indonesia because the index is dominated by the banking component that is very sensitive to the volatility of macroeconomic conditions. In this study, the condition is represented by the rate of inflation and the BI rate.

Abstract

There have been many views and hypothesis regarding the impact of competition on banking performances and stability. In order to find the optimum level of competition, we should start by measuring the level of competition in the industry. This article shows the development of competition level in Indonesian banking, measured with four different methods (Concentration ratio, Herfindahl-Hirschmann Index, H-statistic, and Lerner Index). We found that concentration in deposit and loan markets have become slightly more concentrated, with increasing market power indicated by Lerner Index. We also found that Lerner Index of Indonesian banking have a bimodal distribution, which indicates that Indonesian banking tend to be divided into two clusters based on its market power. On the other hand, development of H-statistic illustrates different tendencies where it indicates that banking market power is diminishing. The different result indicates that, even if the overall assets of Indonesian banking have become more productive, it has become more costly for them to earn new assets. Therefore we recommend Indonesian banking to do consolidations in order to gain economies of scale and scope in earning new assets.

Abstract

Energy security is defined as the ability of an economy to provide sufficient, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy services so as to maintain a maximum welfare of the state. Despite the widespread use of the energy security concept, it doesn’t have a regular indicator to measure energy security; so this causes bias in determining the direction of energy policy. Oil Vulnerability Index _OVI) could be used as an indicator which can assess energy security, particularly in oil. This study aims to estimate oil security in 15 oil importer countries in 2010 using OVI. The results show that most countries have oil security problem. Asia is the region that has low level of oil security than other regions. Indonesia is one of the countries that has low level of oil security. Fuel subsidy is considered to have large contribution causing a low level of oil security in Indonesia.
