Abstract

This study investigates how ideological legitimacy and claims of innocence are discursively constructed in Tom Lembong’s handwritten pledoi as reported by Tirto.id within the context of his corruption case. While previous Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) research on corruption has primarily examined media framing and political elites, limited attention has been given to technocratic actors and to defense statements as autonomous sites of ideological production. Addressing this gap, the study employs a qualitative research design with a descriptive–interpretive orientation, utilizing Teun A. van Dijk’s CDA framework to analyze the discourse at macrostructural, superstructural, and microstructural levels. The data consists of a single online news article reproducing the pledoi during the pre-trial phase. The findings indicate that the global meaning of the text is structured around themes of gratitude, cooperation with legal authorities, institutional trust, nationalism, and religious devotion, which collectively construct an ideology of moral–patriotic integrity. At the superstructural level, the discourse follows a coherent narrative sequence that moves from respectful address and gratitude to moral self-positioning, institutional alignment, national commitment, and religious closure, guiding readers toward an interpretation centered on humility and ethical credibility. At the microstructural level, positive lexicalization, inclusive pronouns, high-commitment modality, presuppositions of innocence, repetition, politeness markers, and the absence of legal jargon contribute to a non-adversarial and morally persuasive discourse. Overall, the pledoi functions as an ideological substitute for legal defense, foregrounding moral, national, and religious values to negotiate legitimacy under conditions of legal and institutional asymmetry. This study contributes to CDA by foregrounding defense discourse as a site of ideological construction and by extending corruption discourse analysis to technocratic actors within Indonesian digital journalism.

Abstract

The Battle of Dūlāb was a conflict between the Khawārij al-Azāriqah group and the Umayyad Dynasty government, triggered by the Khawārij’s rejection of the Umayyad political and religious authority. This study aims to analyze the elements of balāghah contained in the correspondence between al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf al-Thaqafī and his adversary Qaṭarī ibn al-Fujā’ah, during this event. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Primary data consist of the letters exchanged between al-Ḥajjāj and Qaṭarī as found in classical sources, while secondary data are obtained from various literary works, historical documents, and relevant classical texts. The findings reveal three main results. First, from the perspective of ʿilm al-bayān, the study identifies 3 instances of tashbīh, 2 instances of majāz istiʿārah, and 2 instances of Kināyah. Second, from the perspective of ʿilm al-maʿānī, the analysis reveals 3 instances of kalām khabarī, 3 instances of kalām inshāʾī, 1 instance of qaṣr, 2 instances of iṭnāb, and 1 instance of Ījāz. Third, from the perspective of ʿilm al-badīʿ, the study identifies muḥassināt lafẓiyyah in the form of 5 instances of sajʿ, 3 instances of jinās, and 1 instance of iqtibās. In addition, muḥassināt maʿnawiyyah is represented 1 instance of ṭibāq.

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic landscape of the culinary business in Palopo Town, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, addressing the limited research on smaller urban contexts with distinct local languages and commercial dynamics. The research aims to identify the most frequently used languages in culinary signboards and to explore the motivations behind these linguistic choices. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through field observation in October 2025, resulting in 20 photographed culinary signboards. The analysis used the interactive model, involving data reduction, categorization based on language composition and communicative function, and sociolinguistic interpretation. The findings reveal four categories: monolingual English (40%), monolingual Indonesian or local languages (30%), bilingual (15%), and multilingual (5%). English is predominantly associated with modernity and global identity, while Indonesian and local languages signal cultural closeness and authenticity. Most business names are non-clausal nominal phrases, emphasizing brevity and branding efficiency. The results demonstrate that language choice in Palopo’s culinary signage functions not only as identification but also as a strategic tool for identity representation, market positioning, and negotiation between global and local values in public space.
